A blurred image of a Wake in Fright poster in an early shot in Birdeater cuts right to the heart of directors Jack Clark and Jim Weir’s feature debut, a hat tip to the style and tone of madness ahead. Like Ted Kotcheff’s 1971 classic thriller, Birdeater utilizes horror and thriller mechanics and tropes to deconstruct Australia’s masculine identity, one at odds with today’s sociopolitical landscape, through a contemporary lens. While it doesn’t push the genre elements far enough, its heady themes, sustained dread, and distinct visual language culminate in a tense psychodrama that poses compelling questions.
The signs that something’s deeply amiss in the relationship between engaged couple Irene (Shabana Azeez) and Louie (Mackenzie Fearnley) come fast and furious from the outset. Codependency issues and controlling behavior bubble just beneath the surface of their seemingly idyllic romance. Before filmmakers Clark, who wrote the script,...

Under a starry western sky last weekend, Park City Song Summit founder Ben Anderson stood onstage and held court in front of an audience of creatives.
“We’re going to change the legacy and culture of music on this mountain,” Anderson howled into the evening chill, his voice echoing far and wide into the surrounding high-desert peaks of Utah. Then he dove headlong into a rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”
Ivan Neville, Eric Krasno, and Anders Osborne all joined Anderson for the tribute, along with a slew of...

Showtime has ordered a second season of its Emmy-nominated docuseries Vice. The renewal comes shortly after the series wrapped its first season on Showtime and received a 2020 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special, its first Emmy nom on the network.
“In the most challenging conditions imaginable, Vice serves as our collective conscience, delivering vital reporting from around the world, often at great risk to themselves,” said Vinnie Malhotra, EVP, Nonfiction Programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “We could not be more proud of the work the team has done, and we’ve marveled at their exceptional investigative and in-depth reporting. We anxiously await what Vice will tackle in the coming season.”

George Clooney, an outspoken activist on the issue of genocide in Sudan, has issued another missive in his attempts to increase attention on the African country's humanitarian crisis. The filmmaker and Satellite Sentinel Project co-founder John Prendergast penned an op-ed for Vice News tied to its companion HBO series.
Friday's episode of Vice, its second-season finale, follows journalist Ben Anderson as he's embedded in Sudan, exposing the lingering crisis as media attention and international efforts have drifted elsewhere.
It's that lack of attention with which Clooney and Prendergast take the biggest issue. "The spotlight is fickle -- we're already seeing ...

Every once in a while, a band will come on to the music scene and become a huge success in a short amount of time. One of those bands is Digital Summer, an aggressive modern rock group out of Phoenix, Arizona. The band has had a string of tours recently with the likes of Sevendust, Disturbed, Godsmack and Alice In Chains - just to name a few. Four of the band's singles, "Whatever It Takes," "Disconnect," "Just Run," and "Hostage," are being played regularly on major radio stations across the country. Along with all of this, one of the main things that I find most impressive about Digital Summer are the band member's interesting backgrounds. Vocalist Kyle Winterstein is a firefighter and paramedic. His brother, Ian Winterstein, is not only the guitarist for the group but is also a paramedic. The bassist, Anthony Hernandez, is currently getting his business degree in marketing.

If there’s one actor people love, it’s Nicolas Cage. He’s not only shown his vast acting talent, but he’s shown why he’s got staying power. Cage has gained fans with his quirky, yet intense roles, such as alcoholic screenwriter Ben Anderson in “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995) and publishing executive Peter Loew, who believes he’s slowly turning into a vampire in “Vampire’s Kiss” (1988). His ability to mold himself to various genres is also something that’s made him a Hollywood fixture; he has performed in female-centric films like “Moonstruck” (1987) starring Cher, and family films like Disney’s “National Treasure” series (2004, 2007) and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (2010). Cage has gone through [ Read More ]...
