Romer Zane Grey and Stephen Slesinger were best friends. Each year they gathered at Steve's ranch in the Blanco Basin, near Pagosa Springs Colorado, and ran outdoor youth programs for inner-city kids. They shot a lot of film footage of the majestic natural scenery, in the Upper Blanco, including Square Top Mountain, that was used in various pictures. The ranch was set up like a western town where some of the -away shots were also filmed. One was a cattle stampede, for which Romer and Steve paid for each pound the cattle lost during their run.
