Ascendant Fox, one of the producers behind hit Stephen Graham indie pic Boiling Point, which is being made into a BBC TV series, has struck a development deal with BBC Studios and signed the commissioner of Netflix’s Bank of Dave.
The deal, which will see BBC Studios invest in Ascendant’s slate and gives its distribution arm a first-look on projects, comes as Bank of Dave‘s Hannah Perks joins the outfit as Head of Development, while Victoria Zalin becomes Head of Production.
The indie was one of those behind the multiple-bifa-winning one-camera movie that follows Andy’s (Graham) catastrophic evening as head chef of his own restaurant. The BBC TV series will come out later this year, with Graham reprising his role alongside Vinette Robinson, Ray Panthaki and Hannah Walters.

When the BBC revealed it was adapting hit British indie film “Boiling Point” into a TV show, it was applauded as one of the most forward-thinking orders made at the public broadcaster in years — demonstrating the kind of savvy seen at global streamers, which are always quick on the draw in commissioning adjacent programming for a hit title. This time, Britain’s public broadcaster had also capitalized on a local sensation.
The four-time BAFTA-nominated “Boiling Point” centred on a stressed-out head chef, played by “Matilda” star Stephen Graham, who quickly loses the room in a fast-paced kitchen. The movie, which released in the U.K. in January 2022, used an anxiety-inducing one-shot technique for the entire feature, heightening the intensity of the frenzied kitchen scenes. It later drew comparisons to another claustrophobic kitchen drama, FX series “The Bear,” which premiered last summer.

It’s been two years since the chaotic events of Boiling Point, actor-turned-director Philip Barantini’s audacious one-shot kitchen drama set over one hectic night in a busy, upmarket London restaurant and starring Stephen Graham as Andy Jones, a stressed-out head chef on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
The film — Barantini’s debut feature (and based on his own experiences in the hospitality industry) — was a major success, landing four BAFTA nominations (including Graham’s first on the film side) and winning four of its 11 British Independent Film Award nominations.
While the natural response to such a hit would be to make a follow up, Boiling Point will instead be returning on the small screen, BBC Studios in 2022 announcing a new five-part series that will pick up eight months on from the film’s momentous night. Boiling Point, Philip Barantini’s hit British indie one-shot film starring Stephen Graham, is to be made into a BBC TV series charting events six months after the movie took place.
Graham and co-star Hannah Walters’ Matriarch Productions is behind the five-part sequel about the cut-throat world of high-end restaurants alongside Ascendant Fox with Barantini’s Made Up Productions and filming will begin early next year. The project is Made Up’s debut TV series.
Picking up six months from where the film ended, when Graham’s character Andy was lying crumpled on the floor having collapsed, the series will follow Andy’s former Sous Chef Carly (Vinette Robinson) as Head Chef at her own restaurant. Hit British movie “Boiling Point,” about a stressed-out chef played by “Matilda” star Stephen Graham losing his grip on a fast-paced kitchen, is getting a TV adaptation from the BBC.
The series will pick up six months on from where the film left off, and will see sous chef Carly (Vinette Robinson) as head chef at her own restaurant, with many of the film’s original cast reprising their roles alongside her – including Stephen Graham as the film’s head chef Andy, and Hannah Walters as Emily.
The movie famously used a one-shot technique for the entire feature, heightening the intensity and urgency of the frenzied kitchen scenes. The series won’t be using the same treatment, Graham and Walters confirmed.
The series will reunite the film’s co-writer and director Philip Barantini, who will helm the first two episodes, with co-writer James Cummings and producers Hester Ruoff and Bart Ruspoli.

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has been named the best film of 2021 at the Ee British Academy Film Awards, which were presented on Sunday in London by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Campion’s Western drama has been a favorite all awards season, and it is the one major film not to have a significant stumble on the road to the Academy Awards, which will take place in two weeks. Although questions remain about its vulnerability under the Academy’s preferential system of vote counting, the BAFTA win is a strong indicator that it remains the film to beat, even if BAFTA and Oscar voters have only agreed once in the past eight years.
