After 25 years as a talent agent, CAA vet Jeremy Plager is leaving to launch his own production and management company. He’s firming his list of clients and will start with Woody Harrelson, producer/financier Paul Brooks, actress Clara Rugaard, and writer/director/producer Oren Moverman.
Plager will become producer — along with Star Thrower Entertainment, Luke Davies and Harrelson — of the limited series The Most Dangerous Man In America, about the nerdy Harvard prof Timothy Leary who after being arrested for smoking a joint, escaped and found himself on the run and harbored by the Black Panthers, the Weather Underground and others as he became a counterculture icon; and a remake of the inspiring Spanish film Champions that Peter Cattaneo is directing and Gerard Butler is starring in for Focus Features. Brooks is also a producer on that one.

While the "Rake" session at the TCA 2014 winter press tour was filled with information about the upcoming Fox dramedy, the best moment during the event wasn't serious or informational at all.
Executive producer Peter Tolan ("Rescue Me"), who has been a consistently entertaining presence at past TCA events, had a hilarious prepared bit to poke fun at what he was and wasn't supposed to discuss during the panel.
He said Fox's publicity department contacted him a month ago with a list of what the network didn't want him to bring up. Tolan didn't take too well to that mandate, and his response was priceless.
It was scathing and tongue-in-cheek and fantastic, and if it's any indication of what viewers can expect from "Rake," then they are in for a treat. Here is the transcription of Tolan reading from his "journal" about the events that happened on set in its entirety.

Rake, in which Greg Kinnear plays a brilliant lawyer who is selfish and irresponsible in his personal life, may be a tough sell for network audiences weaned on broad comedies and soapy thrillers. Fox has put in development How To Lead A Life Of Crime, a drama based on the book by Kirsten Miller. Written by Mike Daniels (FX’s Sons Of Anarchy) with House alums Garrett Lerner and Russel Friend supervising, the project is about a how-to school for criminals. 20th Century Fox TV, where Lerner and Friend are under an overall deal, is producing. Daniels is with ICM Partners. CBS has bought Tigers, a legal drama from writer Meredith Philpott (MTV’s Awkward), Sony Pictures TV and Peter Tolan’s studio-based Fedora Entertainment. It centered around a family dynasty of lawyers headed by a matriarch infamous for her narcissistic personality, biting witticisms and publicity-seeking antics. Tolan and Fedora’s Michael Wimer are exec producing. Philpott is with ICM, Heroes & Villainsand attorney Gregg Gellman. Exclusive: Comedy’s hot summer continues with another very big commitment for a half-hour project. In a competitive situation with multiple networks bidding, Sony TV/Peter Tolan‘s pitch Irreversible, based on the Israeli series Bilti Hafich, landed at ABC. The network has greenlighted a pilot with a big, seven-figure penalty behind it off of a pitch — a rare feat for any pitch and a first for an Israeli format. In another first for a format originating from the Middle Eastern country, Irreversible will be written solely by the Israeli co-creator of the original series Segahl Avin, who also will direct the U.S. pilot. Avin is executive producing with Fedora’s Tolan and Michael Wimer and Reshet TV, the Israeli broadcaster behind the original series. Irreversible centers on Andy and Sarah, a somewhat eccentric, self-absorbed couple, and their trials and tribulations — most of which they bring upon themselves. Bilti...

After lengthy negotiations, CBS has closed a deal with Sony Pictures TV to redevelop the Jim Gaffigan/Peter Tolan comedy, originally developed last season when it went to pilot. Unlike another CBS single-camera family comedy pilot from last season, The McCarthys (also from Sony TV), which is being re-piloted as a multi-camera sitcom, the Jim Gaffigan project will remain single-camera. Co-written by Gaffigan and Tolan, the project, inspired by Gaffigan’s real life, stars the comedian as the happily married and harried NYC father of five as he is in real life. I hear only Gaffigan from the cast of the original pilot is returning as the producers are taking a new look. Tolan and Gaffigan are executive producing with Michael Wimer and Alex Murray for Sony TV and Fedora Entertainment.

CBS is sticking with Jim Gaffigan. The network is redeveloping his comedy pilot for the 2014-15 broadcast season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The project marks CBS' second pilot order for the new development season, joining The McCarthys, which is also being redeveloped. The single-camera semi-autobiographical comedy from Sony Pictures Television stars Gaffigan as a happily married and harried New York father of five -- as he is in real life. Gaffigan will rewrite the pilot with Fedora Entertainment's Peter Tolan. Fedora's Michael Wimer and Gaffigan's manager at Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Alex Murray, will executive produce. The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the second announced yesterday. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on Fox.
While "The Following" proved a breakout winner, Fox had few success stories last season. So, it is going a bit more ambitious this year with numerous dramas, comedies and one-off "event series".
Several pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the family of government-sanctioned assassins drama "Boomerang," the adaptation of Lauren Oliver's book trilogy "Delirium" about a world where love is illegal, the legal interns workplace comedy "To My Assistant," the U.S.S. Lexington-set "The Wild Blue," and "The List" about the hunt for a thief who stole a file containing the secret identities of people in the Witness Security Program,

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

Looks like the new cool thing for directors to try after a big success is dipping their toes in TV. Ang Lee is following up his Life Of Pi Oscar triumph with a pilot for the Homeland team, and Sam Raimi is swapping the big fantasy visuals of Oz The Great And Powerful for Sony TV’s legal dramedy show Rake.Adapted from an Australian comedy drama series, Rake follows brilliant-but-batty criminal defence lawyer Keegan Joyce (Greg Kinnear), who is amazing at his job but terrible with people. A pair of NBC comedy pilots have cast lead actors, one of them from an existing NBC show.
Ellie Kemper of "The Office" will star in "Brenda Forever," closing a deal after a week of heavy speculation that she'd take the part. Dave Annable ("666 Park Avenue") will play one of the title roles in "Joe, Joe and Jane."

Ellie Kemper has closed a deal to play the lead in the NBC single-camera pilot Brenda Forever. Kemper, who is close friends with Leeds and Lampson, had been circling the project since it sold as a spec last week. She has been among the most sought-after comedy actresses this pilot season. An Office fan favorite is getting her own show.
Ellie Kemper has signed for the lead role in the NBC comedy pilot Brenda Forever. The flashback-filled pitch: “Stories from Brenda Miller’s past and present are interwoven to give a unique portrait of how a chubby, awkward, but incredibly confident 13-year-old grew up to be a 31-year-old woman who still marches to the beat of her own drum.”
The actress-comedian seemed destined to land a starring gig following The Office, which concludes this season. In the past couple years Kemper has landed supporting roles in the hit big-screen comedies Bridesmaids and 21 Jump Street.

For some Chuck fans, hearing the news that Zachary Levi has already been cast in an upcoming pilot might cause some pain around a still tender wound. But if ever there were a time to accept Chuck’s end and embrace something new and strange, now would be that time. Levi has indeed found himself a new project to attach himself to, and it will move him closer to his roots in comedy, though I’m hoping it will give him enough room to stretch his emotional muscles (the dude can cry!).
According to Deadline, Levi is the first to be cast in Fox’s ensemble comedy Let It Go. While Chuck was an hour-long action dramedy, Let It Go will be a half-hour, single-camera comedy. Levi got his big break on television by appearing on ABC’s sitcom, Less Than Perfect, making Let It Go a sort of combination of his past roles.

Zachary Levi won't have a whole lot of down time between TV jobs.
The "Chuck" star, who wrapped filming on that series in December, has picked up his next role in Fox's comedy pilot "Let It Go." Levi took the part after fielding multiple offers in the wake of "Chuck" ending, Deadline reports. His casting lifts a contingency on the pilot and gives it a formal green light.
"Let It Go" will center on a married couple (Levi is playing the husband), the husband's best friend and the wife's sister as they deal with life's small annoyances. DJ Nash ("'Til Death," "Traffic Light") created it and is executive producing with Peter Tolan ("Rescue Me") and Michael Wimer.
