- His father lived on Carbon Beach south of the Malibu Pier, next door to comedienne Carol Burnett, and a few doors up from actor William Windom, who used to challenge the Brysons to regular chess games, and leave fuming if the younger Bryson beat him. John Frankenheimer lived nearby, and Bryson met Robert Kennedy staying with the director during the late senator's presidential campaign.
- Tagging along with his father on photo assignments as a child, he got out of first grade classes to see the X-15 rocket plane at Edward's Air Force Base in California, ride in a helicopter flown by U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, and visit Disneyland after hours. He was a subject, along with his family, in a LIFE magazine Halloween pictorial by George Silk.
