Fox has canceled freshman shows “Pivoting” and “Our Kind of People.”
“Pivoting” starred Eliza Coupe as Amy, Ginnifer Goodwin as Jodie and Maggie Q as Sarah. The single-camera comedy, written by “2 Broke Girls” and “The Conners” alum Liz Astrof, followed three women after the death of their childhood best friend. Faced with the reality that life is short and in a desperate attempt to find happiness, they make a series of impulsive, ill-advised and self-indulgent decisions, strengthening their bond and proving it’s never too late to screw up your life.
The comedy debuted in January and had a 10-episode run.
Created by Wendy Calhoun, “Our Kind of People” starred Yaya DaCosta as Angela Vaughn. It followed strong-willed, single mom Angela (DaCosta) as she set out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line for Black women. But she quickly discovered a...

The fate of Leah Franklin Dupont may remain unsolved after Fox canceled freshman drama Our Kind of People.
The series, which was created by Karin Gist and Wendy Calhoun with Lee Daniels as exec producer, was given a 12-episode run when it was greenlit in March 2021 under Fox’s straight-to-series model. It evoked comparisons to the Lee-co-created Empire, which had a very successful run on the network but linear ratings were soft.

Yaya DaCosta-led drama “Our Kind of People” has been canceled after just one season at Fox, Variety has learned.
Based on Lawrence Otis Graham’s book “Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class” and produced by Lee Daniels and Karin Gist, the series takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for more than 50 years.
“Our Kind of People” follows strong-willed, single mom Angela Vaughn (DaCosta) as she sets out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line that highlights the innate, natural beauty of Black women. But she soon discovers a dark secret about her own mother’s past that will turn her world upside-down and shake up this community forever. The show is a soapy, thrilling exploration of...

The idea of a series starring Black characters on a historically Black, monied island that’s completely unconcerned with the white power structures beyond it is a juicy one. Created by Karin Gist of Fox’s “Star” and “Revenge,” and executive produced by Lee Daniels, “Our Kind of People” embraces its singularity. Whereas something like HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” takes pains to diversify the typically white social strata of the Upper East Side, “Our Kind of People” unfolds in the Oak Bluffs corner of Martha’s Vineyard, where the “Black elite” have long established their wealthy bonafides. In theory, adapting Lawrence Otis Graham’s history of the area (“Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class”) into a primetime soap opera is a sharp idea. In execution, at least in the first two episodes screened ahead of the show’s Sept. 21 linear premiere, “Our Kind of People...

Fox’s Our Kind of People is easy to want to like, and occasionally it’s actually easy to like. Billed as a juicy family saga à la Empire (with whom it shares executive producer Lee Daniels), the hourlong drama promises dramatic twists, luxe-life wish fulfillment and fabulously attired actors ripping into each other at fancy parties — all with an undercurrent of social commentary, based as it is on Lawrence Otis Graham’s critically acclaimed 1999 book of the same name about the Black upper class in America.

It’s usually easy to tell if Morris Chestnut is a good guy on the TV dramas he stars in. He has played a couple of FBI agents, a manny, and life-saving doctors on two separate Fox procedurals.
But on the network’s new nighttime soap Our Kind of People, which premieres Tuesday at 9/8c, Chestnut’s Raymond Dupont is a smooth and successful businessman with secrets that could either expose him as the villain no one saw coming or a do-gooder trying to amend past misdeeds.

It’s been three years since “Scandal,” when the allure of live tweeting series on a weekly basis was at its peak for Black Twitter. Since then, many other soapy, watch-after-you’ve-put-the-kids-to-sleep dramas, like Netflix’s “Firefly Lane” and “Sex/Life,” have popped up on streaming platforms, threatening to dismantle the online group viewing experience in favor of binge watching. But Fox’s new melodrama, “Our Kind of People,” from Karen Gist and Lee Daniels, seems to be trying very hard to rekindle appointment TV for Black audiences with a saga about class wars in the uppity Martha’s Vineyard town of Oak Bluffs.
And it’s not especially worth the effort. In fact, after the first episode, you might consider jumping ship altogether. That’s because the premiere sets up a familiar template that you could probably predict through the end. It’s a shame, because the show boasts wonderful talent like Debbi Morgan,...

Our Kind of People, Monarch and The Big Leap – three of Fox’s new originals for the 2021-22 broadcast season – all took different routes to screen.
The network has been shaking up its development process for the past couple of years, using a mixture of traditional pilot orders, straight-to-series orders, script-to-series greenlights and low-cost summer commissions.
It’s a good thing too, given that Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn revealed that this year the network received fewer traditional development pitches than ever before.
“Every year, the traditional cycle of development changes. This year has the fewest amount of pitches I’ve ever seen. Shallow pools of talent is challenging for every platform. That said, [with] our strategy, being year-round and looking at all different types of programming, we’re really well suited and in a position to handle. Yaya DaCosta addressed her shocking departure from NBC’s Chicago Med after six seasons and whether or not her role in Fox’s Our Kind of People from executive producer Lee Daniels played a role in her decision.

Fox gave a particularly animated Upfronts presentation this year.
The network used its virtual event for ad buyers to tout its subscription-less services. Kicking off with an amusing video that featured Leslie Jordan talking to a slew of Fox stars such as Rob Lowe (as well as some former stars such as 24’s Kiefer Sutherland) and Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment getting a ride from You Bet Your Life host Jay Leno, the presentation moved into a Bento Box-animated portion (see above).
Collier and his team, sometimes under the cover of cartoon, gently slammed the other networks and media conglomerates for the arms race in the subscription video on demand world, highlighting that this is a space that isn’t kind to advertisers.

Fox unveiled its 2021 fall schedule as part of its upfront presentation, with the network announcing renewals for a number of its shows.
Both “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” were renewed, as was the medical drama “The Resident.” “9-1-1” will lead off Fox Monday’s this fall, while “Lone Star” is being held for midseason. “The Resident” is set to kick off Tuesdays for network in the 8 p.m. slot. All three shows debuted at midseason during the 2020-2021 broadcast season. In addition, animated comedy “The Great North” has been renewed for Season 3 ahead of the Season 2 premiere.
“9-1-1” will serve as the lead in to the new Fox dramedy series “The Big Leap.” Inspired by the U.K. docuseries “Big Ballet,” the show is about a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of “Swan Lake.

Fox announced its fall schedule Monday, revealing that “9-1-1” universe fans will no longer be enjoying the shows back to back in the first half of the 2021-22 season, as spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” has been pushed to midseason.
Mondays this fall will still be anchored by “9-1-1” at 8 p.m., but will lead into the new Scott Foley-led drama “The Big Leap” in the 9 o’clock slot. However, that freshman series will wrap by midseason, when “Lone Star” will take over the “9-1-1” slot. Then the “9-1-1” series will be reunited, airing back to back once more, come March.
Fox’s Tuesdays are also seeing a change in pairings, following the recent cancellation of “Prodigal Son.” The now-renewed “The Resident” will keep its 8 o’clock hour, with the first season of Lee Daniels’ drama “Our Kind of People” closing primetime from 9-10.

Chicago Med star Yaya DaCosta is set as the lead of of Fox’s new drama series Our Kind Of People, from writer/executive producer Karin Gist, executive producer Lee Daniels, 20th Television and Fox Entertainment.
As Deadline reported, DaCosta is one of two original Chicago Med original cast members to depart ahead of Season 7, along with Torrey DeVitto, as the initial contracts of Chicago Med’s original cast are coming up after Season 6. I hear DaCosta opted to leave at the end of her deal and quickly received an offer for Our Kind Of People.
The Fox series reunites DaCosta with Daniels after co-starring in his 2013 feature The Butler.
Written by Gist inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s provocative, critically praised book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class, the drama, which received a straight-to-series order for the 2021-22 season, takes place in the aspirational world...
