Jacqueline Susann's novel Valley of the Dolls, published in 1966, is still one of the best-selling books of all time — more than 31 million copies to date. The novel, which centers on women finding success in New York City, grew more popular after the story was adapted for the big screen — but its journey to the screen was not all an easy path.

Picture it: any movie theater in the fall of 1960. It was the shower seen around the world, followed quickly and without warning by the screams of millions that reached the darkest recesses of space. Over a short period of time, it was a story that turned legendary, even without seeing the actual film: amateur thief Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), overwhelmed with guilt to return the $40,000 she’s stolen, goes to take a shower and is brutally slashed to death by motel proprietor Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins)… ’s mother. To the studio heads at Paramount, it was the tackiest of numerous tasteless scenes schemed up by a great showman of a director trying his hand at a sleazy B-movie. To history, Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho‘ is a landmark that broke the rules with aplomb and changed the game, all while inspiring a rise in baths among movie patrons (and a joking...

Alfred Hitchcock may have directed The Paradine Case, the 1947 adaptation of Robert Smythe Hichens’ 1933 novel, but the film is most clearly a David O. Selznick production. It was his coveted property, he wrote the screenplay (with contributions from Alma Reville, James Bridie, and an uncredited Ben Hecht), and the movie itself discloses far more of its producer’s temperament than it does its director’s. The Paradine Case was, in fact, the last film made by the British-born master as part of his seven-year contract with Selznick, and by most accounts, Hitchcock’s heart just wasn’t in it. Unfortunately, it shows.
But this is no slipshod motion picture. Selznick spared no expense—the completed film cost almost as much as Gone with the Wind—and the entire project is built on quality and class. Set in London, in “the recent past,” The Paradine Case stars an...

This isn’t the only Alfred Hitchcock film for which the love does not flow freely, but his 1947 final spin on the David O. Selznick-go-round is more a subject for study than Hitch’s usual fun suspense ride. Gregory Peck looks unhappy opposite Selznick ‘discovery’ Alida Valli, while an utterly top-flight cast tries to bring life to mostly irrelevant characters. Who comes off best? Young Louis Jourdan, that’s who.

Documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe has tackled a variety of topics over his career, including zombies (Doc of the Dead) and the fickleness of Star Wars fans (The People vs. George Lucas), but it’s his latest project, 78/52, which thoughtfully examines the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, that might be his most ambitious project to date. The documentary took Philippe three years to complete, and features a cavalcade of fantastic interviews with numerous notable folks, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Guillermo del Toro, Peter Bogdanovich, Bret Easton Ellis, Danny Elfman, Mick Garris, Karyn Kusama, Oz Perkins, Richard Stanley, Elijah Wood, and many more.

Besides making people forever afraid of motel-room showers, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" continues to have an incalculable impact on popular culture. Though it was released 55 years ago this week (on June 16, 1960), it continues to inspire filmmakers and TV producers. In just the last three years, we've seen the 2012 film "Hitchcock" (based on Stephen Rebello's book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of 'Psycho,'" and starring Anthony Hopkins as the director and Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh) and the ongoing A&E TV prequel drama series, "Bates Motel."
Still, for all of the "Psycho" trivia revealed in "Hitchcock," the biopic barely scratches the surface of how the film got made, from the men who inspired the invention of Norman Bates, to the trickery Hitchcock used to tease the press while keeping the film's convention-shredding narrative twists a secret, to the film's unlikely connection to "Leave It to Beaver." Here,...

Helen Mirren is perhaps the only actress of her generation who can come close to matching Meryl Streep in terms of still finding quality film roles and delivering spellbinding performances. This week, she takes on the role of a real-life Austrian immigrant, seeking justice for her family by reclaiming a lost piece of art stolen during WWII, in the drama Woman in Gold (2015). Early reviews have been mixed, yet Mirren, as usual, has been showered with praise for another stunning portrayal from the Oscar winner.
For all the nuance that Mirren no doubt brings to Woman in Gold, it surely won’t be able to hold a candle to her finest post-Queen role, as the wife of the master of suspense in Hitchcock (2012). Based on the book by Stephen Rebello, Hitchcock chronicles Alfred Hitchcock’s (Anthony Hopkins) long journey in bringing the now-classic Psycho (1960) to the screen. The film depicts...

Joaquin Phoenix is finally talking about what really happened during his infamous interview with David Letterman back in 2009.The actor's bizarre behavior and bushy beard left many wondering if he was on drugs or mentally ill -- but now, he's setting the record straight about his strange sit-down with the late night host. "David Letterman was not in on the joke," the "Inherent Vice" star tells Playboy's Stephen Rebello. "My agents, my publicist Sue Patricola -- she’s really good in the movie because she seems so concerned, right? They were all in on it, of course.""But look, David Letterman is one of the smartest guys on television. There’s no way that guy doesn’t know what’s going on in some way. That’s what I’ll say about it," he adds.Check out the clip below to see his crazy antics for yourself! During his interview with Playboy,...

Terence Malick’s Tree of Life divided critics but it was a typically illuminated and unconventional return to the big screen for one of cinema’s enigmas. The relative rush of production on To The Wonder was welcomed by Malick’s fans and for the most part the director does not let them down.
The film follows four people whose intertwining love songs become the heart and soul of the film. There is the evocation of the free spirited love of discovery with Ben Affleck’s tryst with Olga Kurylenko, the cooling and disharmony of...

The great innovators and popular entertainers of previous generations often fade from sight from they retire or die. A new generation discovers them afresh, either on their own, or someone has done some digging. In the case of the famed director Alfred Hitchcock, he has spawned a cottage industry with recent biographies and films. Hitchcock, with Anthony Hopkins nearly unrecognizable under the latex, is based on Stephen Rebello’s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, and portrays a particular point of view about the Englishman.
Psycho is currently his best known work, especially with this week’s debut of Bates Motel on cable but critics tend to pick his other, earlier works as among his best. Sure, this thriller is terrifying and exciting and surprising thanks to the Robert Bloch story, direction, and performances. And the making of the film is worthy of exploration. Director Sacha Gervasi has a...

Legendary director Alfred Hitchcock has many connections to this week. First of all, this past Tuesday was “National Alfred Hitchcock Day,” during which cinema fans revisit the master’s masterworks. Also, the biopic Hitchcock released on Blu-ray and DVD earlier this week. Easily the most famous and most recognizable Hitchcock film was the 1960 thriller Psycho, which helped revitalize his career and changed the face of horror movies in general. Considering that Hitchcock tells the story behind Psycho, and it’s based on the book “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho” (whose author, Stephen Rebello, performs the commentary here), it seems fitting to look at this classic thriller. Rebello’s commentary is available on the 2010 Blu-ray and subsequent DVD releases. Psycho (1960) Commentators: Stephen Rebello (Hitchcock historian) 1. His 47th film, Psycho is Hitchcock’s most famous movie and his biggest financial success. 2. The opening titles were created by Saul Bass, who served as storyboard artist and pictorial consultant...

Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Hitchcock” is simply too real.
“Hitchcock” hits the shelves this week on Blu-Ray and DVD formats. The cast also includes Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Toni Collette and Jessica Biel in this film about the famed suspenseful director.
The movie is a fictional account of director Alfred Hitchcock attempting to stay relevant in Hollywood after his successful films such as “North by Northwest,” and “Vertigo.” With the media focused on younger directors, Hitchcock felt the need to impress movie audiences with a risky venture called “Psycho.” And this film looks into the relationship of his wife, Alma Reville, and the struggles trying to “Psycho” made.
Director Sacha Gervasi made a good movie with great actors of Hopkins and Mirren as the famous couple. The movie blends with humor, drama and a little bit of romance about Hitchcock’s life during the filming of 1960’s “Psycho.

March 12 is National Hitchcock Day, celebrating the Master of Suspense and his oeuvre of films. The Hitch has been enjoying a renaissance of late. 2012 saw two films about him (albeit not entirely flattering portraits of the director): "Hitchcock," starring Anthony Hopkins in the title role and Helen Mirren as wife Alma Reville, and "The Girl," starring Toby Jones and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren. (Our Toh! comparison between "Hitchcock" and the making of "Psycho" as described in the Stephen Rebello book upon which the film is based, is here; our coverage of Hedren talking about her experience working on "The Birds" is here.) Last year also marked a historical turning point in Sight & Sound's Top 100 Films of All Time, as Hithcock's brilliant psychological romance and portrait of deleterious obsession "Vertigo" took the No. 1 spot, dethroning "Citizen Kane." That film, starring James Stewart and Kim Novack, was part of a Universal Blu-ray box set released,...

It’s unclear why March 12th is National Alfred Hitchcock Day. The latest attempt to bring Alfred Hitchcock's life to the screen paints the Master as a crafty hoodwinker triumphing over drab studio execs
F Scott Fitzgerald claimed that, back in 1920, he'd tried to persuade Dw Griffith that the film industry was a wonderful subject for the cinema. Griffith laughed at the idea, but not for the first time Fitzgerald was proved right. He went on to write a series of stories and a great unfinished novel on Hollywood, and since the silent era there has been no end to the making of movies about movie-making. Particular interest has recently been shown in Alfred Hitchcock, one of only two movie directors whose faces are immediately recognisable to popular audiences the world over. The other, of course, is Hitchcock's fellow working-class Londoner, Charlie Chaplin.

When presenting a feature film focusing on the life of one of the most renowned filmmakers of all time, there is certainly an element of pressure on any director taking on such a task – yet for Sacha Gervasi, it’s a project he looked to revel in, and we caught up with the British filmmaker ahead of the release of Hitchcock – hitting our screens this coming Friday.
Gervasi, whose only previous work is that of rock documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil, admits that his low-key debut was in fact the deciding factor in persuading both Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren to get on board, as he also tells us of his delight at working alongside such a cast, also consisting of Scarlett Johansson. He also discusses the importance of Alma Reville, and his next project…

He also discusses the importance of Alma Reville, and his next project…

How much should likeness play into a performance? This is a question I found myself wrestling with when watching Sacha Gervasi’s (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) biopic of arguably the greatest filmmaker who has ever lived, The Master of Suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock.
Even if the script were in place – which it isn’t – there’s a troubling extravagance in the peculiarly Oscar-nominated make-up job Anthony Hopkins is subjected to, which renders him virtually unrecognisable, but also stifles his performance and prevents it from amounting to anything more than Anthony Hopkins playing himself while trying to play Alfred Hitchcock.
Though the film centers around the relationship between Hitch and his wife, Alma Reville (Helen Mirren), as they begin production on the director’s most famous film, Psycho, Gervasi eschews an intimate examination of the director’s methods and personality in favour of documenting the childish...

Films focusing on directors are a relatively rare thing and especially when they chronicle those who actually existed in real-life. The reasoning for this is likely that they just don’t have the most exciting stories to tell when it comes down to it, I certainly can’t imagine Jj Abrams: One Lucky Bastard to be hitting the big screen any time soon for example.
Saying this though, in the space of a couple of months, we have been treated to not one but two takes on the quirks of Alfred Hitchcock, thriller maker par excellence who knew how to generate electricity on screen but also created sparks off of it. The recent HBO production The Girl...

Between Toby Jones's dark monster and Anthony Hopkins's charming genius, John Patterson considers the conflicting portrayals of the British director
Seems like it's always a one-two punch with Alfred Hitchcock. It's only been a couple of months since the release of The Girl, based on Donald Spoto's 1983 biography and centring on its saddest, grimiest revelations – namely, Hitchcock's harassment of Tippi Hedren as they made The Birds and Marnie. The film offered the first of our two Hitchcocks in the squat and toadly form of Toby Jones, who gamely captured Hitchcock's waddle and his occasional reversion in accent to a Dickensian riverside guttersnipe, and dwelt more often than not in the "macabre" end of our understanding of the director.
Now we are granted Anthony Hopkins's far sunnier version. He doesn't look much like Hitchcock, but Hopkins forges on with the same commitment that made his...

The film, which is billed as “a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century, Alfred Hitchcock, and his wife and partner, Alma Reville,” takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho. Anthony Hopkins plays Hitchcock, and Helen Mirren stars as Alma. Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, James D’Arcy, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow, and Kurtwood Smith also star.

There is perhaps no more revered filmmaker than Alfred Hitchcock, so turning his life into a film would be a daunting task for anyone. By focusing on the making of “Psycho” and his relationship with wife Alma Reville, director Sacha Gervasi and his crew were able to encapsulate all that makes "Hitchcock" of such enduring interest to us. The result is a loving tribute to the renowned Master of Suspense. “I think what makes him so fascinating is how brilliant the films are,” says Gervasi. “You can watch these films over and over again and they still have this tremendous originality and richness to them.” -Insertgroups:8- “He’s inexplicable,” says Stephen Rebello, whose book “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of ‘Psycho’” served as the source material for the film. “It’s dicey to interpret an artists inner life purely on the basis of his or her work. While discussing his new film Promised Land and how boring he is, Matt Damon told Playboy (don’t click if you dislike looking at a lot of butts) about the experience of filming in a massive trash dump for Elysium and got humble about the roles he missed out on. “Having to say no to Avatar was tough because I particularly wanted to work with James Cameron, and still do, because he’s fantastic,” Damon said. “He knew he was the star of that movie and that everyone was going to go see it anyway. When he said, ‘Look, I’m offering it to you, but if you say no, the movie doesn’t need you,’ I remember thinking, Oh God, not only do I have to say no because of scheduling, but he’s going to make a star out of some guy who’s going to start taking jobs from me later.” Damon...

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing director Sacha Gervasi, who was in Austin promoting his new film Hitchcock, based on Stephen Rebello's book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho. The movie provides an intimate look behind the scenes of Psycho, where the greatest influence was not from a Hollywood blonde but the formidable woman in Hitchcock's life -- his wife, Alma Reville. The film opens in Austin on Friday.
Gervasi -- seen above at a post-interview lunch -- chatted with me about Hitchcock's influences and the challenges he faced during the making of Psycho, as well as Gervasi's own method of portraying such an iconic subject.
Slackerwood: Your film Hitchcock demonstrates an intimacy that audiences normally wouldn't associate with Alfred Hitchcock.

Alfred Hitchcock’s fixation with the icy blondes who populated his films (Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, and most infamously, Tippi Hedren) is well-documented, but less-known are the details of the director’s 50-year marriage to his story editor Alma Reville. The new film Hitchcock explores the relationship between Hitch and Alma with Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren in the roles and sets it against the filming of their terrifying 1960 classic Psycho. With this movie-buff’s dream premise, this cast, a smart script by John McLaughlin (Black Swan), and a sly score by Danny Elfman, you’d think this project could direct itself but they handed the reins to newcomer Sascha Gervasi, whose only previous film was the rock doc Anvil! The Story Of Anvil (read my review Here). The result is a film that falls short of the greatness I think it could have achieved if a more visionary director...

My first thought on Hitchcock: “Uh-oh, prosthetics.” I’m always leery ~ so often they’re invoked to claim a free pass on otherwise lackluster execution, or they hamper the actor in bringing us their interpretation, or both. But it was Hopkins… surely he can break through any excessive reliance, yes?
Yes. Helmed by director Sacha Gervasi (Anvil: The Story of Anvil), Hitchcock rings clear and true, its story and nuance well intact to engaging, seriously lighthearted effect. And while Hopkins could have done with less adjustment (facially, anyway), we still get to see him work. His characterization beautifully reflects the legendary director’s distinctive speech pattern and demeanor while never attempting actual imitation (the mark of the great).

Helen Mirren is fantastic as Hitchcock’s wife Alma but Hitchcock makes the Master of Suspense seem dull. The first person onscreen in Hitchcock, director Sacha Gervasi’s playful but misguided tweak on Stephen Rebello’s film history book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho" isn’t the famous Master of Suspense (Anthony Hopkins) or his talented wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). The well-known cast of Psycho including curvy Janet Leigh (played by the even curvier Scarlett Johansson), Vera Miles (Jessica Biel) and Anthony Perkins (James D’Arcy) also come much later in the movie. The first-on-arrival character in Hitchcock is folksy Ed Gein (Michael Wincott), the infamous Butcher of Plainfield, Wisconsin and murderous farmhand who inspired Robert Bloch to write Psycho. Gein pops up with shovel in hand; bad luck for his brother Henry, his latest victim.

If you had thought about Alfred Hitchcock before the past few months, you probably would have simply thought of the legendary filmmakers many classics: "Psycho," "Vertigo," "Rear Window"...
But now there's a movie: "Hitchcock," released on Friday (Nov. 23). What do the critics think of this version of the man?
Loosely based on the book, "Hitchcock and the Making of 'Psycho'" by Stephen Rebello, "Hitchcock" stars Anthony Hopkins in the title role with Helen Mirren playing the director's wife, Alma Reville, and Scarlett Johansson as star Janet Leigh. The events of the film revolve around the production of Hitchcock's horror masterpiece, "Psycho."
Alas for "Hitchcock," directed by Sacha Gervasi, many critics do not seem to find that the new film meets Hitchcockian standards.

New York — For his first professional acting job, a 22-year-old Anthony Hopkins took a train from South Wales to Manchester. With time to kill on a rainy day, he dropped off his bags and headed to the movies, where a long queue wound outside the cinema.
"It was packed," Hopkins recalls. "I sat down and I didn't know what the hell I was in for. I had heard stories about it. When it got to the shower scene, I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life."
The movie was, of course, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho," a film that 52 years after its shocking premiere still hasn't released audiences from its subversive thrall. The film, which Hitchcock called "a fun picture," was revolutionary in its violence, its sexiness, its sympathy to the perspective of the criminal mind – and, perhaps above all, its technique.
"What if someone really good made a horror picture?...
