Michael Horn is leaving Sony as the studio implements ‘streamlining’ in marketing and distribution.
Paul Noble has been named co-president of international marketing at Sony Pictures Entertainment (Spe), taking over from president of international marketing Michael Horn, who is leaving the company.
The change is part of a reorganisation of the studio’s marketing and distribution departments that will involve the elimination of positions in a number of departments. According to reports, more than 20 staff will be laid off.
Noble, who started his career in the UK advertising business, has led Spe’s international creative advertising operation since 2015, most recently as executive vice president.

Josh Greenstein, president of worldwide marketing and distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, has just sent a memo to staffers announcing the company is cutting down on staff in its marketing and distribution departments as part of a reorganization.
In the email, Greenstein said that this move will impact positions in strategy, publicity, media, operations, consumer, and distribution as the company moves forward in “streamlining some of our more traditional marketing operations and consolidating various international and domestic groups into single global teams.”
“The reorganization will help our department better reflect the realities of how movies are released today, and build the connective tissue needed internally and externally to be effective and efficient,” he wrote in the memo (read it below). “Some of you are now taking on new roles, responsibilities or new reporting relationships, and I appreciate your continued focus, resilience and ability to work through change.

Sectors affected include research and strategy, publicity, media, operations, consumer, and distribution groups. The studio declined to comment on the matter, but the layoffs equal roughly 25 staffers, the insider said. Layoffs have hit Sony Pictures’ marketing and distribution department, Variety has learned. The cuts, announced on Wednesday, are believed to number at least 25 staffers. The department has approximately 550 employees globally.
The moves follow similar layoffs last month at Sony Pictures Television, as well as a dozen staff cuts at Crackle, Sony’s ad-supported streaming service. The film unit had been bracing for pink slips for some time. It was widely known on Sony’s Culver City lot that marketing and distribution president Josh Greenstein was conducting a top-to-bottom review of the division to find ways to cut costs, while making the marketing group more efficient and globally-oriented. The hope is that it will also improve operating margins.
As part of that effort, jobs are being eliminated in the company’s research and strategy, publicity, media, operations, consumer, and distribution groups.
