At Les Arcs European Film Festival in December, Franco-German co-productions were in the spotlight in a panel moderated by Screen International.
The talk focused on the current state of co-production between France and Germany through the prism of two case studies: Mia Hansen-Love’s Things To Come, starring Isabelle Huppert, and Stéphane Robelin’s Mr Stein Goes Online, starring Pierre Richard.
The two examples were chosen because of their contrasts. Despite both being French projects with French directors, lead cast and settings, the pair differed significantly in their co-production status and box-office success in the two territories.
Paris-based producer Charles Gillibert, whose credits include Mustang, explained that Things To Come was a majority French co-production that utilised France’s tax rebate for international production (Trip) and raised finance from Germany to complete its budget...

French film and TV lender Cofiloisirs has added London-based former Film4 and Momentum business affairs executive Andrew Hildebrand to its team in a bid to connect with UK productions and grow the company footprint in the market.
The firm has been looking to grow its presence in the UK for some time.
Cofiloisirs is looking to provide cash flow financing to more UK films, television and animation, having closed in recent months on Philippa Lowthorpe’s UK feature Swallows and Amazons and ITV’s high-end drama Peter Pan drama Peter & Wendy, produced by Headline, LipSync and Juliette Films.
The French outfit has also been looking to grow its portfolio of international English-language productions and has recently lent to projects including Martin Koolhoven’s Dutch-German co-production Brimstone and Brendan Muldowney’s adventure-drama Pilgrimage, produced by Savage Films in Ireland and Wrong Men North from Belgium...
