Lahore, Sep 5 (Ians) Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first against Afghanistan in their last group stage match, here at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.
Both the teams need to win the match to qualify for the Group 4 stage but it will be a formidable task for Afghanistan to win it with the big margin. Both the teams are playing with the same playing XI.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Dhasun Shanaka said: “It’s always handy to put runs on the board batting first, takes out the pressure of runs. We have a good bowling lineup and we would love to defend it.”
“Honestly we wanted to bowl first because Nrr is a big factor for us so we wanted to chase. We will try our best to take good decisions and play positively,” said Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi

Kabul, Aug 27 (Ians) Karim Janat, Najibullah Zadran and Sharafuddin Ashraf have made a return to Afghanistan’s 17-member squad for the Asia Cup, to be played from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Janat played his only Odi for Afghanistan in February 2017 against Zimbabwe and hasn’t featured in the format since then. But Janat has made appearances in T20Is, including taking a hat-trick against Bangladesh, and also made his Test debut this year.
Ashraf, who hasn’t played ODIs since January 2022, also makes a comeback to the team as a reserve spinner. Najibullah, who missed the recently-concluded Odi series against Pakistan due to a knee injury, has been included in the lineup and is expected to recover from the injury before the start of the event, said Afghanistan Cricket Board (Acb) in its statement.

Wanted to see Afghanistan spinners’ overs off and accelerate against their fast bowlers: Shadab Khan
Hambantota, Aug 25 (Ians) After Pakistan secured a thrilling victory in the second Odi against Afghanistan, all-rounder Shadab Khan said his plan was to see off the overs of their spinners and go for the runs against the faster bowlers.
In chasing 301, Shadab made 48 off 35 balls and brought Pakistan back in the hunt in the 49th over when he smashed a four and six on two full tosses against fast bowler Abdul Rahman.
With 11 runs needed off the final over, he was run-out by Fazalhaq Farooqui at the non-striker’s end, after moving out of the crease before the ball was bowled. But Naseem Shah (10 not out) and Haris Rauf held their nerves to take Pakistan over the line with a ball to spare.
“When you’re a senior player, you go through these stages again and again. Sometimes you fail, sometimes you succeed. I try to be as calm as possible.

Hambantota, Aug 24 (Ians) Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s run-a-ball 151 went in vain as Pakistan on half-centuries by opener Imam-ul Haq and skipper Babar Azam and a crucial 48 by Shadab Khan to win a last-over thriller for a one-wicket win in the second Odi here on Thursday.
Pakistan took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the Odi series against Afghanistan with a nail-biting win in a match that produced 602 runs, the highest match aggregate involving the two teams in ODIs.
In the death overs of the second innings which was filled with one dramatic moment after another, Pakistan managed to hold their nerve to win the second Odi by the barest of margins – with a ball and a wicket to spare.
Naseem Shah was once again the tormentor for Afghanistan as he snatched away what could have been their maiden Odi win against Pakistan.

Hambantota, Aug 24 (Ians) Afghanistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz became the third fastest player to smash five Odi hundreds with his swashbuckling 151 against Pakistan in the ongoing second match of the series against Pakistan on Thursday.
Gurbaz overtook Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (25 innings) and is now sitting behind the joint-first position holders, Quinton de Kock (19) and Imam-Ul-Haq (19). Afghanistan were helped to a solid total of 300/5, courtesy of a brilliant 151 from Gurbaz. This was their highest total against their regional rivals, Pakistan.
His century was also the first time that a wicketkeeper scored a 150 in men’s Odi against Pakistan. The previous best by a wicket-keeper was Ms Dhoni’s 148 at Visakhapatnam in 2005. The 151 against Pakistan, coming at run-a-ball, with 14 fours and three sixes, is Gurbaz’s fifth Odi ton, and it came in merely 23 innings.

Hambantota, Aug 22 (Ians) Ahead of the Asia Cup and the subsequent World Cup India, Pakistan pacers came up with a strong performance in the 1st Odi against Afghanistan here on Tuesday.
The Pakistan pacers shared eight wickets between them as they bowled Afghanistan out for 59 in the first Odi of the three-match series.
Haris Rauf (5-18) took a career-best haul while Shaheen Shah Afridi (2-9) and Naseem Shah (1-12) also hit top gear in Pakistan’s first Odi outside home in 2023.
Pakistan had struggled to gather momentum in their own batting innings, needing a late ninth-wicket stand to lift them past 200 against a strong Afghanistan bowling attack.
Opener Imam-ul-Haq was the only silver lining for Pakistan as he struck a 94-ball 61 while ShadabKhan (39) and Iftikhar Ahmed (30) too made vital contributions as the 1992 World Champions were all out 201 in 47.1 overs.
But the quicks ensured that Pakistan were on course for a win within the first 10 overs.

Kabul, Aug 6 (Ians) The 18-year-old left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad made a comeback as the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced a strong 18-member squad for the three-match Odi series against Pakistan to be played in Sri Lanka later this month.
For the series which will be a buildup for the Asia Cup and an important stop in firming up their squad for the upcoming Men’s Odi World Cup in India, Afghanistan brought back teenage spinner Noor Ahmad as they work out various combinations.
Noor’s return means that there was no room for left-arm spinner Zia Ur Rahman Akbar, who recently made his Odi debut against Bangladesh, the squad to be led by Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Uncapped leg-spinner Izhar-ul-haq Naveed, who was part of the Test squad, has also been left out for the three matches that will be played on August 22, 24 and August 26.

Hambantota, June 4 (Ians) Afghanistan have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against Sri Lanka in the first Odi at Hambantota on Friday, said the International Cricket Council (Icc).
Ranjan Madugalle of the Icc Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Hashmatullah Shahidi’s side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
In accordance with Article 2.22 of the Icc Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
Hashmatullah pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Prageeth Rambukwella, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Lyndon Hannibal levelled the charge.

Kabul, Jan 3 (Ians) A 16-member squad has been announced by Afghanistan Cricket Board (Acb) for the upcoming three-match Odi series against Ireland, scheduled to be played in Oman.
The series was scheduled to be held in United Arab Emirates (UAE), however, due to visa issues the series will be held in Oman, Acb has informed.
The three ODIs will be played on January 18, 21 and 23 at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground (Ministry Turf 1) in Al Amerat.
"The squad is selected keeping in mind the team balance, future plans as well as physical fitness of the players," Acb's Director of Cricket Raees Ahmadzai said.
While some of the Afghan cricketers are currently playing in the Big Bash League (Bbl) in Australia, they are expected to join the squad before the beginning of the series.
Afghanistan's last international assignment was also against Ireland when the two teams faced each other in three T20Is in March in India.
