To the surprise of no one, James Cameron’s dazzling Avatar: The Way of Water dominated the 21st annual Visual Effects Society Award nominations, which were announced on Tuesday. The juggernaut earned 14 Ves noms, a record number for a feature film or any single project in the society’s awards history.
That includes a nomination in the top category for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature. Disney dominated the 18th annual Ves Awards with five nominations apiece for Jon Favreau’s frontrunner “The Lion King” and Robert Rodriguez’s surprising “Alita: Battle Angel” (acquired from Fox). With “Frozen 2,” Disney got more ambitious with its sequel, exploring the royal family backstory of Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) while explaining Elsa’s mysterious magical ice power. There’s a colorful enchanted forest with earth, wind, water, and fire spirits, along with the monochromatic danger of the Dark Sea and what lies beyond. And it plays out as a contrast between the idealistic fairy tale qualities of Anna and the weightier mythological aspects of Elsa. The 2019 View Conference has added several new speakers, including “Frozen 2” VFX supervisor Steve Goldberg, who will present a preview of the much anticipated “Frozen 2” at the conference ahead of the film’s Nov. 22 opening. Goldberg has worked on several other Disney Animation projects including “Frozen,” “Tangled” and 1992’s “Aladdin,” for which he received a BAFTA nomination.

Our friends from Upbeat always give us top quality videos to host on HeyUGuys but this one (in my opinion) is their best so far! They got to travel to Disney Animation Studios in Burbank California and were given amazing access to the world of Disney where they explored just how the 50th animated Disney feature film, Tangled is made.
In the featuerette, we get to see interviews with directors – Nathan Greno & Byron Howard, Art Director – David Goetz, Visual Effects Supervisor – Steve Goldberg, Head of Disney Animation Research Library – Fox Carny and Supervising Animator – John Khars.
This really is a fantastic featurette and if you’re intersted in Disney in general or anything to do with animation, this is well worth a watch.
