Sharjah, March 25 (Ians) A run-a-ball 38 not out by Mohammad Nabi after a brilliant display by their bowlers helped Afghanistan beat Pakistan by six wickets in the first of the three T20I matches here.
It’s been over 11 years since the two teams first played each other and Rashid Khan’s side has finally managed to win their first international match against Pakistan, playing without many regulars including skipper Babar Azam, here on Friday night.
Nabi figured in an unfinished 53-run partnership with Najibullah Zadran (17 not out) as they rescued Afghanistan from a precarious position to take them to 98/4 in 17.5 overs after the bowlers showed their class to restrict the new-look Pakistan side to 92/9 in their 20 overs.
It was a clinical performance by Afghanistan from start to finish as they put on a great display despite losing the toss and being asked to bowl first.

What makes this year’s tournament, to be held in the T20 format in Dubai and Sharjah, special is that it will also mark the return of the greatest rivalry in men’s cricket — India vs Pakistan. The return of the Asia Cup to the UAE also brings back the tradition of India-Pakistan matches being played in the country through the 1980s and 1990s, mainly in Sharjah.
India, the defending champions and seven-time winners of the trophy, will be looking to retain their throne as the best in Asia. A successful defence of the Asia Cup title ahead of the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November, where they will be facing Pakistan too on October 23, will be a huge boost for India, who have embraced an attacking style of play with the bat since their early exit from the tournament last year.

Melbourne, Dec 28 (Ians) South Africa spinner Imran Tahir, who was due to represent Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, has withdrawn from Australia's premier T20 competition due to personal reasons.
His pullout is yet another instance of an international player withdrawing from the Bbl this season as it comes in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic. England's Tom Curran (Sydney Sixers) and Tom Banton (Brisbane Heat) had earlier pulled out due to biosecurity bubble fatigue.
Steve Smith, who is currently involved in the ongoing Test series against India too said he won't be playing any games this season. Jonny Bairstow had to withdraw due to international call-up.
