Documentary music films about the careers of singer-songwriter Charli Xcx and late rock legend Tom Petty will headline this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, as the Austin fest has unveiled its full 2021 slate.
Charli Xcx’s “Alone Together” will be the closing night film about how she made an album over the course of 40 days in quarantine, while “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free” will be the centerpiece film that uncovers new 16mm footage of Petty at work on his 1994 album “Wildflowers.” Rounding out the headliners for SXSW is the previously announced opening night film, “Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,” a YouTube Originals documentary about the aftermath of the actress and singer’s near-fatal overdose in 2018.
This year’s SXSW, now in its 28th year, is virtual and online after 2020’s festival was one of the first major events to be canceled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Charli Xcx is releasing a documentary film called “6ft Apart,” based on the recording of her quarantine album, “How I’m Feeling Now,” which was released in May. The album, the first to be made in quarantine by a major artist. The prolific performer, songwriter and producer first announced the album on April 6th, giving herself a hard deadline of May 15th. “It’ll be very DIY — I’ll make it from scratch, very indicative of the times we’re in,” she said during a Zoom session with fans — and sure enough, advance streams of the album arrived on the 14th.
“It felt only natural to document myself making this album,” Charli says of the film. “I don’t think I’ve ever made music in such a unique situation: being so logistically far apart from my collaborators, but going through exactly the same thing, writing songs about my relationship...

One part Real World, one part Making the Band, Netflix's new reality series documenting the exciting rise of all-female rock 'n roll band Nasty Cherry - aptly titled I'm With the Band: Nasty Cherry, which begins streaming on Nov. 15 - is an unflinching glimpse into the ambition, drama, personality clashes, and most importantly, magic, that goes hand in hand with trying to make it in the music industry.
The six-episode show is worth a watch, to be sure, but what's key is just how much Nasty Cherry's music is worth a listen. The four-piece outfit - which consists of lead singer Gabbriette Bechtel, guitarist Chloe Chaidez, bassist Georgia Somary, and drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson - clearly has talent, which is evident in the four songs the band has released so far. That's a part of what makes the Netflix series so compelling - you want them to succeed almost as much as they do.
