Playing at the historic Pantages Theater through Saturday, West End phenomenon and Tony-winning musical Six has finally made its way to Hollywood.
Six’s co-creators and writers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss never planned for more than a few hundred people to see their modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII.
“It was low stakes,” Marlow remembers about writing the show during their final year of university at Cambridge in 2017. “But we were nervous about it. It was the first time that we were writing something like that together. It was gonna be performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We didn’t want to embarrass ourselves in front of our year group with writing something that was really bad.
But with graduation just around the corner, the friends were mostly concerned with passing their exams than writing Broadway’s next great hit. “We would meet...

As much fun as it was to see music's biggest names get honored at the 2023 Grammy Awards on Feb. 5, it was also a highlight to cheer for all the artists who picked up their very first wins this year.
The 2023 freshman class was packed with rising talent who are just getting started on their music careers, but they're not all lesser-known names. One of the biggest Grammys categories is, of course, best new artist, where the Recording Academy recognizes the brightest up-and-coming stars. This year, Anitta, Omar Apollo, Domi & Jd Beck, Samara Joy, Latto, Maneskin, Muni Long, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle, and Wet Leg were all nominated, but Joy took home the award (and delivered a gracious acceptance speech for the honor).
Other Grammy categories had a high number of first-timers, too. The best rock album category, for instance, featured the first career Grammy nominations for Machine Gun Kelly (who...

Photo: The 2022 Tony Awards The Recap This year’s Tony Awards featured an excellent selection of shows, with many of the categories being a toss-up right up until the winner was announced. Myles Frost and Deirdre O’Connell, in particular, earned pleasantly surprising wins. O’Connell herself acknowledged the unconventionality of Dana H. in her acceptance speech, saying “Please let me standing here be a little sign to you from the universe to make the weird art.” Speaking of unconventionality, Michael R. Jackson’s A Strange Loop won Best Musical to a standing ovation. Jackson’s hyper-meta, uncompromising take on being a black, queer writer took audiences by storm, and Jackson himself showed up in a hot pink, cape-length overcoat to match the hype. Winners of the 88th Annual Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 20 2022 at a ceremony hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2021-2022 theater season.
Tony Awards frontrunners mostly dominated the production categories. Best Musical went to “A Strange Loop,” Best Play went to “The Lehman Trilogy,” and Best Revival of a Musical was handed to “Company.” The Second Stage Theater production of “Take Me Out” prevailed in the hotly competitive Best Revival of a Play category.
The winners of the Drama League’s inaugural categories for direction of a musical and play went to Marianne Elliott (“Company”) and Kate Whoriskey (“Clyde’s”), respectively. Elliott sits far out front in the corresponding Tony race, though Whoriskey’s triumph comes as a surprise. This frequent collaborator of Lynn Nottage failed to earn a Tony nomination,...

In March of last year, the new musical “Six” was literally minutes away from opening on Broadway when the coronavirus pandemic halted its performance. Eighteen months later, the musical by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow has officially bowed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Oct. 3, the second new production of the 2021-2022 season.
Moss and Marlow wrote the music, lyrics, and book for this reimagining of the six wives of King Henry VIII as their varyingly unfortunate tales of abuse, neglect, and, yes, beheading get remixed into contemporary pop confections performed concert-style as they attempt to name a leader of their band. The multi-hyphenate Moss also directs the musical with Jamie Armitage. The six wives are portrayed by Adrianna Hicks, Andrea Macasaet, Brittney Mack, Abby Mueller, Samantha Pauly, and Anna Uzele.

Gallows humor – and after the last 18 months, can there be any other kind? – is in exuberant form at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where the terrific new musical Six just had its long-in-coming opening night.
Originally set to open on March 12, 2020 – Covid had other plans – Six and its sextet of singing, dancing queens has lost none of its vitality and charm over the ensuing months of darkness. If anything, the musical seems even more joyous for the time away. Take that, virus.

Broadway performances all over the New York theater district are starting back up again after a year and a half of Covid-19 pandemic closures. There are currently six musical productions set to open this fall. Could we see any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Let’s take a look at the plot of each musical as well as some of the awards history of their creators, actors, and creative teams, plus the opening and closing dates (where applicable).

“It was a crazy experience,” Patrick Foley chats about the flurry of activity it took to produce “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” in just one month. Foley and Michael Breslin are both executive producers and writers of the musical special, which grew out of the phenomenon of hundreds of TikTok users writing original songs for a then-hypothetical musical adaptation of the 2007 Disney/Pixar film. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As executive producers, Breslin and Foley assembled an all-star team behind the scenes, including Jeremy O. Harris as fellow executive producer, Lucy Moss as director, Ellenore Scott as choreographer, and David Bengali as video designer. “Once we had those core pieces together, then we were off to the races,” Foley shares. The entire team, he adds, shared a goal to “honor and lift up the TikTok material,” especially the original creators’ “exuberance and joy of invention.”

“The guiding ideal was to honor both the origins and the aspirations of the creators,” director Lucy Moss shares about her vision for “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical.” It was born out of an online phenomenon of hundreds of TikTok creators writing songs for a hypothetical musical based on the 2007 Disney/Pixar film. Moss carefully considered how to “take this material completely seriously as a theatrical endeavor whilst also embracing the chaotic comedy and almost ironic-y tone of TikTok.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The score for “Ratatouille,” arranged by Daniel Mertzlufft and orchestrated by Macy Schmidt, has a “very traditional” Disney sound, and Moss tried to bring that magic to the screen. “I really tried to make it feel like a virtual representation of what you might have seen in a Broadway theatre,” she shares. The pop musical Six was set to debut on Broadway on March 12th, but that never happened, since the coronavirus pandemic prompted New York to shut down all productions to halt the spread of Covid-19. The cheeky musical — which had already been a hit in the U.K. — took the doomed wives of King Henry VIII and refashioned them as the saucy members of a girl group thanks to Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the two twentysomethings who wrote the show’s original music and lyrics.
