Tumhari Sulu
Starring Vidya Balan, Manav Kaul, Neha Dhupia, Vijay Mourya
Directed by Suresh Triveni
One extra star in this flawed and often loosely structured film for Vidya Balan’s extraordinarily empathetic performance as a middleclass housewife, okay homemaker, with serious concentration issues.
You see, our Sulochana, aka Sulu can’t focus on any one thing (but then this film can’t focus on the issue at hand either) not even her growing son who, as it turns out, becomes conveniently problematic as the narrative progresses. A scene later in the film in the principal’s office of Sulu’s son’s school made me cringe in the way similar sequences of reprimanded parents never made me feel in English Vinglish or Hindi Medium.
The progress report of Sulu’s life runs in direct proportion to the storyteller’s(feeble) ability to keep the momentum alive.
Or perhaps ‘progress’ is...

Bollywood’s new year is set to begin with the intensity of the unusual and power packed casting of superstar Amitabh Bachchan with the multi-faceted Farhan Akhtar in Wazir. This first release of the year, directed by Bijoy Nambiar, is also a talk of the town with one of the most melodious romantic songs of recent times Tere Bin. Not only this, the film will see Amitabh Bachchan playing a paralysed chess grandmaster with a very unusual look.
Given its storyline and the powerful trailer, with music to match, it is believed that Wazir will interest teenagers and young adults. To reach young and upwardly mobile audiences who spend more time on the internet and mobile phones than television, two stars of the film – Farhan Akhtar and Aditi Rao Hydari, have featured on the latest episode of the hotstar Originals series ‘M Bole Toh’, sharing memories from their childhoods, and...

The world of Bollywood and the works of Shakespeare have an igniting connection. Oozing with Othello’s jealousy and a love affair gone sourly pear-shaped, we have Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara (2006).
Then there’s the obvious Romeo and Juliet. The star-crossed lovers are a favourite pair amongst Bollywood. The tragedy has churned out flicks such as Bobby (1973), Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and the more recent Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela (2013).
The surefire combination of Bollywood and Shakespeare now comes through The Merchant of Vembley, a stage play set in London’s North Wembley and perfomed at The Cockpit, London.
If you have never been to Wembley (or even if you have), close your eyes and picture delicious samosa’s selling in the high street. Then visualise every Asian aunty and uncle on the street and of course, that Indian shop that sells 50 different types of achaar (pickle).
Yes, we are in Wembley!

After wowing critics and audiences with her grand comeback in English Vinglish Sridevi is all set to return to her roots in Tamil cinema. Sridevi's next film would be in Tamil, and would be dubbed in Hindi. Directed by Chimbu Devan, the film would also feature Tamil superstar Vijay and Kannada star Sudeep. But Sridevi will play the main role of a princess in the film. Confirming these developments Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor said, "Yes, she is doing a film with the Tamil star Vijay. That's all I can reveal at the moment." In this fantasy caper, Sridevi would play a princess whose province is imperiled by the evil machinations of her enemy. Sri had earlier played a princess in Chandramukhi and Khuda Gawah. Apparently her daughters persuaded Sridevi to complete her trilogy of royal films by doing a third film where she is cast as a princess.

The biggest hurdle that a remake has to cross is the passion of the fans of the original. Zanjeer 1974 was no ordinary film. There was so much to this film that made it extraordinary: classic in status, the Angry Young Man icon for Amitabh Bachchan, the genre shift from romance to action with story-telling and let’s not forget Mona Darling. Pretty hefty stuff if you think about it. Nevertheless, the fresh team for Zanjeer 2013 headed by Apoorva Lakhia, has had a debut, a comeback of sorts and enough off screen drama to give a bit of original hype to the remake. But hype doesn’t make up for audience impact nor an entertaining story. Ok so the original film was of the same simple story of revenge and action and yes, it had a bigger hand in Amitabh’s life than played by Ram Charan. But in the end,...

Decades of heat and humidity damaged only known copy of 1948 release, and film was close to being lost forever
It was a masterpiece of India's cinematic golden age, a surreal blend of comedy and dance that told the story of a struggling writer's attempt to break into the movies. But decades of tropical heat and humidity severely damaged the only known copy of Kalpana, and the film was close to being lost forever.
Now it has found an unlikely saviour: Martin Scorsese. The American director's World Cinema Foundation, set up to preserve classics of film history around the globe, plans to start restoring the neglected classic within months.
News that the director of Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas has thrown his weight behind the project provoked delight among south Asian film buffs.

Star-casts: Karthi, Thamannah, Millind Soman, Jagan, Omar and others
Banner: Tirupathi Brothers
Production: Subash Chandra Bose
Direction: Lingusamy
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Cinematography: Madhi
From the maker of ‘Anandam’, ‘Run’, ‘Ji’, ‘Sandakozhi’ and ‘Bheema’, here comes a disappointing film ‘Paiyya’ that in no way holds a special mention for its clichéd storyline and narration. The film isn’t nowhere different from Lingusamy’s previous films’ plots –say –Run and Sandakozhi as you can find the similarities with an ease.
The film opens well with an entertaining approach, but literally sets itself on contrastive grounds during the second half. When Vijayakanth, Sarath Kumar, Arjun and Vijay rolled down the hefty henchmen at the same time at various Indian States, Karthi too joins this bandwagon.
Doubtlessly, he’ll be one amongst them if he continues performing fight sequences of not getting hurt at any point of time.
Shiva (Karthi) set outs for...

Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed King of Bollywood, his zillions of fans worship him everyday, some young female ones have secretly married his portrait.
But fans were majorly disappointed with the contrived climax of his latest release, 'Rab ne bana di jodi'.
Sample this plot hole in 'Don': If Vijay was Don all along, he killed Vijay after waking up from the coma, then why pretend to be Vijay who pretends to be Don? To escape the clutches of police? Ok, but then why give information to D' Silva about his gang, start getting his gang members killed/arrested and jeopardize his complete business that he has worked so hard to build? If he wanted to eliminate Singhania and Vardhan (of whom he did not know till the end) and take over the business then why risk his own life?
Although Shahrukh has made wonderful movies like 'Swades', 'Kabhi haan kabhi naa',...
