British arthouse theater chain Curzon has been bought by Cohen Media Group in a deal that also includes Curzon’s distribution arm and its streaming service. The purchase adds 20 cinemas and 46 screens to the stable of Cohen Media Group, which almost exactly a year ago acquired Landmark Theatres in the U.S.
Financial details of the Curzon deal were not disclosed. But it spells the end of the involvement of the Wingate family in the chain, 85 years after Harold Wingate founded the Mayfair cinema in London to screen imported films. Charles Cohen, the owner and chairman of Cohen Media Group, assumes the role of chairman of Curzon, replacing Roger Wingate. CEO Philip Knatchbull will remain in post.
“Among exhibitors and distributors of great films, there are few names in the international marketplace as important as Curzon and Curzon’s Artificial Eye,” its distribution arm, Cohen said. “We are thrilled to unite with this honored brand,...

The Curzon group, the UK’s flagship arthouse film company, has been acquired by U.S. indie distributor and exhibitor Cohen Media Group.
The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, comprises Curzon Cinemas, distributor Artificial Eye and the Curzon Home Cinema streaming platform. The UK chain currently operates 20 theaters and 46 screens in and around London.
Curzon’s chairman Roger Wingate will be stepping down, thus ending an almost 80-year family association with the group. Cohen Media Group owner Charles S. Cohen will assume the position of chairman.
Given that Cohen Media Group releases many of the same films as Curzon, Cohen said he believes the deal can herald “a new powerhouse in international distribution.”
According to the real estate developer, whose fortune is estimated to be $3.4Bn, Curzon will expand in a “thoughtful and measured way”. Curzon CEO Philip Knatchbull added that Curzon “is easily transportable and scalable outside the U.

“Wayne” star Ciara Bravo is set to co-star with Tom Holland in Anthony and Joe Russo’s next film, “Cherry,” the sibling duo’s follow-up to the massive hit “Avengers: Endgame.”
The remaining ensemble includes “It” star Bill Skarsgard, Jack Reynor, Forrest Goodluck, Jeff Wahlberg, Michael Gandolfini and Kyle Harvey. The Russo brothers will direct the adaptation of Nico Walker’s New York Times bestselling novel. Production is currently under way.
“We were drawn to ‘Cherry’ given our personal experience from Cleveland, as well as the important need to share stories like these. As Cleveland natives ourselves, it means a lot to us to be able to film in our hometown. We shot the exteriors for ‘Winter Soldier’ here, we are excited to return home to our roots,” said Anthony and Joe Russo.

There has been an overwhelmingly positive response from the UK film industry to the new measures for UK film tax relief included in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.
Industry analysts and trade bodies alike have issued statements and made comments applauding the new measures. These follow on from the introduction earlier in the year of the new UK high-end TV tax credit and seem certain to boost everything from co-production to VFX.
“Today’s announcement is more excellent news for the UK’s creative industries,” said Charles Moore, partner at media law firm Wiggin. “The changes will be of particular benefit to the UK post-production/VFX sector, where the increased financial incentive for larger budget films, the reduced minimum UK expenditure level and the expected amendments to the Cultural Test are likely to mean an increased number of films being attracted to the UK to utilise its world-class VFX houses, thereby addressing...

The list comprises a mixture of executives, producers, actors and writers, but is it a fair reflection and who has been omitted?

No one disputes that women have a long way to go in achieving equal status in broadcasting and film. But it is also easy to fall into the trap of whinging about unfairness, rather than saluting those who win through.
That is the point of the Top 50 Powerlist, relaunched on Thursday by Women in Film & TV, in association with Screen International and Broadcast.
After a first stab in 2010, it is timed to mark and chime with International Women's Day. Tonally, it is striving to change the pitch from minor to major: people of achievement clearly come in both sexes.
Kate Kinninmont, Wftv chief executive, says that in "true womanly style" the list is not arranged in any order, though one ambitious...
