In 1948, in Northeast China, the remnants of the Kuomintang are evacuating and planning to blow up the Anshan Steel plant. In a moment of crisis, the heroic Zhao Tiechi (Liu Ye) leads the Communist troops straight into the hinterland and fights to the death to stop the enemy’s plot. Tiechi is transformed into a “steel warrior” and resumes production alongside engineer Sun Xuefei (Han Xue), veteran worker Meng Tai (Lin Yongjian), and general manager Cheng Shixun (Zhang Guoqiang). However, the blast furnace has become an iron heap, the factory is in ruins, spies are secretly observing them, the front line is in a tight spot and time is drawing near. "A team of specialized warriors." Well Go USA has revealed an official US trailer for a Chinese action film titled Wolf Pack, which is getting a US release in theaters at the end of this month. It opened a few weeks ago in China and hasn't played at any film festivals. This seems to be yet another jingoistic, nationalistic Chinese propaganda movie similar to US action movies about how great US mercenaries are at stopping bad guys from doing anything bad on American soil. During one a mission of the elite military Wolf Pack squad, who are engaged in overseas security work, they discover that foreign terrorist forces have extended their reach into China's energy lifeline. The action film stars Max Zhang, Aarif Lee, Jiang Luxia, Gianluca Zoppa, Ye Liu, and Mark Luu. Looks like another generic action film without anything original about it. ›››

Based on a novel published anonymously on the internet in 1998, which became quite popular among the gay communities, “Lan Yu” was shot mostly in Beijing, without government permission, and only received a brief mainland Chinese run during the Film Association of Beijing University-sponsored ‘’China’s First Gay Film Festival’’ at Peking University in December 2001. Outside of China, however, the movie won numerous awards in various movie festivals throughout Hong Kong and Taiwan, including Liu Ye’s win for Best Actor at Taiwan’s 38th Golden Horse Awards. It was also an official selection at many major film festivals, including Sundance and Cannes. Now, the film has received a gorgeous 4K restoration, which has already started its festival run.

Few films can claim a bumpier, more public production ride or worse crash landing than “Air Strike,” purportedly the most costly Chinese feature ever when it was shot — which was three years ago. Since then, it’s undergone several title changes, delays, and most cripplingly become part of a wide-ranging tax evasion scandal in which actress Fan Bingbing was convicted for financial fraud. As a result, the film’s Chinese release was canceled outright. In the U.S., Lionsgate scaled its primary distribution plans back to on demand, with subsidiary Grindstone handling a much-reduced theatrical launch. Oh, and a movie shot in 3D now appears to be showing nowhere in that format.
Of course, most viewers roped in by the promise of Bruce Willis in a WW2 combat movie (with Mel Gibson conspicuously listed as production “consultant”) will be oblivious to all that offscreen drama. What’s onscreen, however, is...

The planned theatrical release of big-budget Chinese war movie “Unbreakable Spirit,” has been scrapped following allegations of money laundering. The film had earlier been at the center of the tax avoidance allegations involving actress Fan Bingbing.
The film, previously known as “The Bombing,” was originally set for an August release. That was rescheduled to Oct. 26 after the Fan affair became major news. But Chinese media now report the release as cancelled.
Aside from Fan, the film has a stellar cast that includes Bruce Willis, Liu Ye, and Nicholas Tse. Director, Xiao Feng said the film had taken eight years to make.
“It is time to let it go,” Xiao Feng wrote on social media. “My sincere apologies to my crew, the distribution team, and all audiences who had high expectations of the film.” The film’s distributors, Beijing United Exhibition Partners, and Qi Tai Culture did not respond to Variety’s inquiries.

Chinese superstar Liu Ye anchors the cast of Baoping Cao's upcoming crime comedy Cock And Bull. And true to the title this one appears to be a fairly silly affair, the sort of dark comedy that wouldn't be entirely out of place in the Coen Brothers' catalog. Finding an even remotely coherent English synopsis for this one is proving difficult but the story revolves around a tow truck driver in a rural community in western China caught up in the swirling chaos around a murder. Building a comedy around a killing is not a simple thing in China, where the censorship laws put strict limits around how crime and its consequences can and cannot be portrayed on screen but this looks to be a really...

Stars including Mike Tyson, Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan walked the red carpet at the opening of the Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff) last night, along with three Korean jury members who are attending the festival despite the controversy surrounding Mers.
Many Koreans cancelled their trip to Shanghai earlier this week after the festival sent out letters advising them to stay away due to concerns over the Mers (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) virus that has hit South Korea. Cj Entertainment, Showbox and Finecut are among the companies that decided not to show, along with Busan International Film Festival (Biff) director Lee Yong-kwan.

What’s the first image that pops in your mind when you hear the name “Jackie Chan”?
For most of us, Chan is an iconic martial artist who always finds a way to make his films action-packed, replete with massive explosions and death-defying stunts, without totally sacrificing humor. However, in his film “Police Story: Lockdown,” Jackie loses the goofy grins and replaces it with intense gazes and an overall pensive look.
The Criminal Avenger, the Hardened Detective, and the Damsel in Distress
The Story Behind the “Lockdown”
Well, you can’t blame Jackie Chan, who portrays Detective Zhong Wen in “Police Story 2013,” for the serious face.
Detective Zhong has been searching for his estranged daughter, Miao, only to find her in a relationship with the seedy nightclub owner, Wu Jiang. Their difference in opinion resulted to an argument, but before he can try and reach out to his daughter, he was knocked unconscious.

"Hey, supercop!" Well Go has put out a trailer for the upcoming Us release of Police Story: Lockdown, the latest in the Police Story franchise starring Jackie Chan. The film actually played in China back in 2013, and is just now getting a release here in the Us, but this isn't the same goofy Jackie Chan we've seen so much of recently. The first season of Chinese TV drama All Quiet in Peking wrapped up a historic run on local video-on-demand sites, scoring a cumulative 400 million views from its debut on Oct. 6 to its finale on Nov. 30. The period drama is set in the tumultuous year of 1948, during China's civil war—a rarity for local television programming, given the era's political sensitivity among Chinese authorities. The thought of Jackie Chan returning to the Police Story series after a nine year hiatus will have left many viewers in a temporary state of anxiety. The Police Story movies - particularly parts one, two and three - are hugely inventive action comedies starring Jackie at the top of his game. Action hero Chan first appeared as Inspector Chan Ka Kui in 1985, before returning to the series as Senior Inspector Chan Kwok-Wing in an unrelated - mostly worthwhile - 2004 entry. Jackie is getting on a bit now, so it would be unfair to expect the death-defying stunts we've become accustomed to over the years. Instead we get a dark and moody offering from director Sheng Ding, a far cry from their previous collaboration, the quirky action comedy Little Big Soldier. Inside an Industrial factory-turned-nightclub on a busy city street, all the patrons are being held hostage. Among them are...

Though there’s always at least a bit of excitement at the release of any new Jackie Chan film, the announcement of “Police Story 2013” came as a particularly big piece of news, being the sixth instalment in the classic stunt filled series. With Chan having obviously aged since his early days of hanging off buses and it having been some 10 years since “New Police Story”, the film unsurprisingly takes a different direction, director Ding Cheng (“The Underdog Knight”) aiming to mix in more drama and emotion with the action. With support from Liu Ye (“The Last Supper”) and Jing Tian (“Special ID”), the film was a Hong Kong-China production, and like most of Chan’s recent outings has more of a Mainland influence and appeal than his early works. Chan plays Police officer Zhong Wen, who’s in town to meet up with his estranged rebellious daughter Miao (Jiang Tian...

I’ll never not be a fan of Jackie Chan. Sure he suffers from foot-in-mouth disease, but as with Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin before him I’ve learned to appreciate the art even more than the artist. To that end Chan has provided us with incredible entertainment over the years, often at the detriment of his own physical well being, and one of his greatest achievements is the Police Story film franchise that started way back in 1985 (and includes Supercop and First Strike). And now the sixth film, saddled with the somewhat ridiculous moniker of Police Story 2013, is scheduled to open in Chinese theaters later this month. (Seven days before the start of 2014 to be precise, meaning the film will already be dated just one week into its release.) As with 2004′s New Police Story, the film actually bears no connection to the character of Kevin “Jackie” Chan who helped make the first four so damn...

Guan Hu, writer and director of the acclaimed “Cow”, returns with another World War II set comedy drama in “The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel”, which sees the titular three rogues going up against the Japanese in Beijing to try and get their hands on a cure for cholera. Headlined by three of the country’s most popular actors, Liu Ye (“The Last Supper”), Zhang Hanyu (“Back to 1942”) and Huang Bo (“Lost in Thailand”), the film takes place mainly in the one location, and is an imaginative and constantly shifting affair that attempts to keep the viewer guessing through to the end. The film opens in 1941 in Beijing under Japanese occupation, with a strict curfew enforced and the city decimated by a cholera epidemic. A stage coach trying to pass through is ambushed and hijacked by the Scoundrel (Huang Bo), who subsequently crashes into an inn, run by proprietor the...

If you were to look up the word 'bonkers' in the New English Dictionary you would probably find this film. Liu Ye, Zhang Hanyu and Huang Bo are the eponymous heroes of The Chef, The Actor, The Scoundrel, a wartime comedy-drama from director Guan Hu (Cow). An English subtitled version is available to own on DVD from 30 August 2013. You can pre-order it - after checking out the trailer - at the link below. No word on an official U.K release but stranger things have happened. Synopsis: A desperate Scoundrel (Huang Bo) tries to rob two Japanese travellers, but a Chef (Liu Ye) captures them first and holds them hostage in his Japanese restaurant. The Chef, his mute wife (Liang Jing), the Scoundrel and a rakish opera Actor (Zhang Hanyu) who works at the restaurant, argue over what to do with the captives. When they learn the captives are actually...

Jackie Chan’s “Police Story 2013″ is on its way to theaters in China this December. Judging from the latest poster for the flick, it looks as though the action star is taking the series in a darker direction. The “Police Story” movie, while enjoyable, are definitely not to be taken seriously. However, director Sheng Ding seems to be moving away from the goofier adventures for the next installment of the long-running franchise. Depending on what you want from Jackie Chan, this is either a good or a bad thing. I didn’t care much for Chan’s 2009 thriller “Shinjuku Incident” or his 2012 actioner “Chinese Zodiac,” albeit for different reasons. Here’s hoping “Police Story 2013″ finds a balance between dark drama and intense action. I’d love to see a well-balanced Jackie Chan movie right about now. Scratch that — I need it. “Police Story 2013″ stars Jackie Chan, Liu Ye,...

From the looks of the poster art to Jackie Chan's upcoming film Police Story 2013, it appears this will be more of a dramatic and gritty kind of animal compared to the comedic, stunt-heavy action thrill rides from the classic Police Story series. Directed by Sheng Ding (Little Big Soldier, Underdog Knight 1 & 2), the film is not related to the previous installments, with Jackie playing a mainland China Interpol officer sporting a new crew-cut hair style instead of the traditional long-haired daredevil Hong Kong cop. Mainland Chinese actor Liu Ye (Beginning of the Great Revival, City of Life and Death) has been cast as the villain and Chinese actress Tian Jing (Special ID, The Warring States) has been cast as the officer's daughter....

With big budget Chinese historical dramas and epics still proving incredibly popular, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that two films went into production around the same time about the Feast at Hong Gate, one of the most key and controversial event in the annals of the country’s history. Thankfully, the two films in question take very different approaches to the material, Daniel Lee’s reasonably enjoyable 2011 outing “White Vengeance” having focused mainly on the battles and personal rivalries. Now appearing somewhat later out of the gate is “The Last Supper”, arguably the more promising of the pair due to the presence of acclaimed director Lu Chuan, whose recent “City of Life and Death” still stands as one of the best Chinese films of the last decade. As expected, Lu’s offering is both more artistic and philosophically-minded, with Liu Ye (“City of Life and Death”), Daniel Wu...

Chinese director Lu Chuan presented his first film at Venice, received the top prize at Taiwan’s Golden Horses with his second, and won the Golden Shell award at San Sebastian with his third film.
With such start, I’d say he can only ascend further, and the films are quite a proof of his boldness when choosing theme and setting for them – as he goes from an urban thriller (The Missing Gun, 2002) to a thriller set among hunters on the Tibetan plateau (Kekexili: Mountain Patrol, 2004) to a black-and-white feature about the Japanese army’s massacre of Chinese civilians in Nanjing during the Second World War (City of Life and Death, 2009).
And then there’s The Last Supper. The story follows Liu Bang (played by Liu Ye), the first emperor of China’s Han Dynasty. It’s a typical story of how an uncultured, uneducated brute grabs power, basks in its excess,...

Tai Chi 0 and The Last Supper: Both films belong to "official" mainstream commercial production. Yet each in its way is a fascinating occasion to reflect upon Chinese neo-studio system.
Tai Chi 0 (Stephen Fung)
Yang Luchan (wushu champ Yuan Xiaochao), a young martial arts genius, desperately wants to learn the famous secret Tai Chi art of the Chen family. With the discrete help of the Grand Master (Tony Leung Kar-fai), and through repeated beatings from the villagers and the Master's daughter (Angelababy), he comes to master some of the Chen art and ends up helping destroying an evil British steam machine that could wipe out the village for the construction of a profitable railway line.
Tai Chi 0 (the first episode of a blockbuster-to-be trilogy) may well entertain foreign and local audiences: manga anime oriented, displaying a cast of top-models, pop icons and kung fu stars new and old,...

With the release of a second teaser trailer of Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" this morning, we got another look at one of the most anticipated films of the year. And with the picture already slated for an October 13th release, for some traveling film critics and fans, and those prepared to head to Italy, the Venice Film Festival could be where the film makes its world premiere, with artistic director Alberto Barbera suggesting a few weeks back that Anderson was heading to the Lido for the fest, which kicks off on August 29th.
With the announcement of the opening film due any day now -- it was on June 21st last year and today, the fest announced their lineup of rare and restored films that will unspool -- and "The Master" trailer reminding us that its one of the candidates, it seemed like a good opportunity to look...

The ever-growing cast for "Iron Man 3" is still… well, growing. It's not enough that high profile actors Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall have joined the cast. Other newcomers to Tony Stark's antics include James Badge Dale and Ashley Hamilton as villains Coldblood and Firepower, and now there's yet another name to toss into the mix: Fan Bingbing.
The Chinese actress has been added to the "list of potential cast" members for "Iron Man 3," Yahoo News reports. Though she's not confirmed for the Marvel Studios threequel, Yahoo reports that "the likelihood that the actress will be casted is better than that of Hong Kong megastar Andy Lau," who has long been linked to a role in the third "Iron Man" movie.
In addition to Fan, Chinese actors Yao Chen and Liu Ye are also reportedly in the mix for "Iron Man 3."

Mainland Chinese actress Fan Bingbing may potentially sign on as the latest addition to the cast of Marvel studios' Iron Man 3. Although the casting of Bingbing in the third installment of the superhero franchise hasn't been confirmed officially yet, it shouldn't come as any surprise if this were to pan out, since the talented beauty has already hinted at her intention to break into Hollywood this year. Dmg Entertainment, the China-based production company that will be co-producing with Walt Disney, has already contacted Fan's agents to present the offer and is now awaiting word on whether or not she's interested. Yao Chen and Liu Ye have also been contacted about roles in the film. However, Dmg film co-producer Dan Mintz earlier revealed that Andy...

Yahoo! Singapore reports that Chinese actress Fan Bingbing is in talks to join the cast of Iron Man 3. Nothing has been made official just yet, although Dmg Entertainment (the production company in China who are co-producing the film with Marvel Studios and Disney) are reportedly waiting to hear back from her agents in regards to whether or not she is interested (it's likely she will be as it was recently revealed that she's pursuing a mainstream Hollywood breakthrough). The site goes on to mention that Yao Chen and Liu Ye have been contacted for a role in the threequel, while earlier reports that Andy Lau would be joining the cast are inaccurate according to Dmg film co-producer Dan Mintz.
