Fox Broadcasting Co. has picked up nine episodes of a makeover show with a characteristic Mike Darnell twist: The 18 female contestants will get plastic surgery as part of their transformations, but the finalists won't be able to see their new and improved faces until after they've participated in the finale, a two-hour beauty pageant. The Swan, set to premiere in the Monday 9 p.m. slot on March 29, was created by veteran producer Nely Galan, whose Galan Entertainment is producing in association with FremantleMedia North America, home of Fox's American Idol mega-franchise, and A. Smith & Co. Galan is executive producing the series alongside Arthur Smith, while Kent Weed is co-executive producer. Darnell, Fox's executive vp alternative series and specials, stressed that in addition to going under the knife, the contestants will be put through rigorous emotional and physical reconditioning sessions as part of a three-month effort to transform "ugly ducklings" into "swans."...
Fox Broadcasting Co. has extended the run of the summer reality series Paradise Hotel by six additional weeks with the order of another dozen episodes. The show, which airs twice a week, features a revolving group of single men and women living together in an exotic resort with one guest eliminated every week to make room for a new one. There will be a seamless transition between the initial eight-week run and the new batch of episodes. Paradise premiered June 18 to modest numbers but has been inching up in recent weeks, even against heightened competition from unscripted fare on NBC and CBS. Paradise Hotel hails from British production company Mentorn and U.S.-based A. Smith & Co. Tom Gutteridge, Charles Thompson, Arthur Smith and Kent Weed are executive producers. "We're delighted that the audience has found the show and that Fox has given us such a terrific support," Gutteridge said. "We're thrilled to be extended so soon into our run." "We think we have a real wonderful reality soap opera on our hands," Smith said.
