Max is turning off the heat on Julia.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled its Julia Child-inspired series Julia following a two-season run. The news comes after the second season wrapped its run Dec. 21 and amid an era of belt tightening across the television landscape, with Julia joining Our Flag Means Death in being axed at the streamer this week alone. Both seasons of Julia will continue to be available to stream on Max.
From creator Daniel Goldfarb and showrunner Chris Keyser, Sarah Lancashire starred as Child opposite David Hyde Pierce. Max did not own the show and instead paid a licensing fee to producers Lionsgate Television, which is in the midst of spinning off from premium cable network Starz.
“We are so honored to have partnered with Chris Keyser, Daniel Goldfarb and their masterful creative team and dynamic cast, led by Sarah Lancashire, as they cooked up Julia.

Fans of the beloved pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death were dealt a heavy blow on January 9. Max has canceled Our Flag Means Death after just two seasons. The series’ creators had said they envisioned just three seasons total for the Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby-led rom-com, and recent social media posts from the cast and crew had fans hopeful that a Season 3 renewal was on the way. Now, “devastated” and “heartbroken” fans are reacting to the shocking cancellation online. Ofmd creator David Jenkins announced the cancellation himself on Instagram. “The bad news is clear. Our Flag won’t be returning for a third season,” Jenkins’ statement reads. “We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end. Casey Bloys, Sarah Aubrey, Suzanna Makkos, Billy Wee, and David Ruby have been incredible champions of this show.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Season 2 of “And Just Like That,” now streaming on Max.
When it came to making the second season of “And Just Like That” — Max’s popular revival of HBO’s iconic “Sex and the City” — showrunner Michael Patrick King found that he simply couldn’t fit what he and the writers had planned into the standard 10-episode season Max was expecting.
After all, “Sex and the City” stars Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) had been joined by four new main characters, played by Nicole Ari Parker (Lisa Todd Wexley), Karen Pittman (Nya), Sara Ramírez (Che Diaz) and Sarita Choudhury (Seema). King knew he wanted to build on those characters, and integrate them more deeply into the story in order to smooth some of the bumpiness of Season 1.

Filming for Matt Reeves’s The Batman Part II is delayed due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. While the AMPTP drags its feet on negotiating with writers for issues including fair pay, filming for The Batman Part II will take place next year instead of later this year in London. While the delay is unfortunate, better conditions and terms for the individuals who craft Hollywood’s stories are overdue. One of the reasons The Batman Part II will be delayed is because the film’s director, Matt Reeves, is also writing the sequel alongside Mattson Tomlin. Both creatives are involved in the strike, showing solidarity with their fellow writers and filmmakers.
Midgard Times says cameras will roll on The Batman Part II in March 2024. Thankfully, the delay should not affect the sequel’s release date of October 3, 2025.

Regarding villains terrorizing Gotham, few rule the streets with the creep factor of the Penguin. The stout, bird-like baddie is a tortured soul. In Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, Danny DeVito played the character akin to a rejected circus freak with abandonment issues and an axe to grind. In Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Colin Farrell taps into Penguin’s aspirations to rule Gotham with an iron fist, controlling who lives, who dies, and who patrols the alleyways. Devito and Farrell’s versions are wildly different. Still, they both crave control over Gothamites, while Batman looms like a shadow over their wicked dreams. As a part of this week’s Just for Variety, the outlet caught up with DeVito, who commented on whether he’ll play the Penguin again and what he thinks of Farrell’s version of Batman’s avian adversary.
According to DeVito, he has no plans to play the Penguin again.

DC’s Dead Boy Detectives will do its snooping on a different streamer. Reports indicate the drama is moving from HBO Max, where the show was developed, to Netflix. Sources say the show is changing venues because it doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu. The duo is retooling the DC’s representation across film, television, and video games, ensuring all the pieces fit together to create a cohesive universe of content. The duo’s plans include five inter-connected shows and Peacemaker on HBO Max. At the very least, Dead Boy Detectives is moving to another platform instead of being canceled.
The Dead Boys Detectives series revolves around Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two dead British teenagers, and their alive friend, Crystal Palace. A press release from HBO Max described it as “a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.

The streaming service on Thursday handed out a straight-to-series order for Welcome to Derry, which is set to take place before the movie franchise.
When the series was first teased 11 months ago, reports stated it would explore the origins of Pennywise, the killer clown at the center of the horror.
In HBO Max's press release, plot details were non-existent, with the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer offering that it would "expand the vision" of the movies.
Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (It and It Chapter Two), and Jason Fuchs (It Chapter Two director) are all on board.
Muschietti will direct the series premiere and more episodes that have yet to be announced.
"As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King's It until the thick paperback fell to pieces," the Muschiettis said in a statement.

Warner Bros. Discovery has a goldmine on its hands with the rights to the Harry Potter universe. Although there is currently a Fantastic Beast prequel film franchise, fans have been anticipating a spinoff series of the beloved Wizarding World universe to hit the conglomerate’s multitude of networks and streaming services. According to a statement made by HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey, “We don’t have a series in active development right now. Every media personality from the ’90s needs a streaming documentary, and Miss Cleo has conjured up her own. The first trailer for “Call Me Miss Cleo,” an HBO Max original documentary, was released on Thursday.
Born Youree Dell Harris, Miss Cleo was the main spokesperson for Psychic Readers Network, a pay-per-call service for people seeking the advice of psychics. Through television infomercials, Harris built up a cult following from 1997 to 2003 across the United States, before the company was charged by the Federal Trade Commission with deceptive advertising, billing, and collection practices. Harris left Psychic Readers Network and continued to play the character of Cleo intermittently in advertisements for used car dealerships and French Toast Crunch cereal, before developing colorectal cancer and passing away in 2016.
The new documentary features interviews with the people closest to Harris, as well as prominent celebrities during her heyday like Raven-Symoné and Debra Wilson, exploring her shadowy and convoluted real-life story.

It was shocking enough when HBO Max announced that they would be returning to the world of "Sex and the City" nearly two decades after the season 6 finale with the spin-off continuation, "And Just Like That...," but the internet was ablaze when the show's premiere kicked off with a massive twist. The debut season of "And Just Like That..." started on a somber note with the death of a beloved character and the necessary funeral arrangements that followed, but ended on a much more hopeful look at the future for Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis).
General feelings surrounding the first season were mixed, but many die-hard fans of the "Sex and the City" franchise were hopeful that any criticisms were the result of reboot growing pains.
