Listening to Pakistani musician Arooj Aftab sing can feel a little like those first few drifting moments after you pop a bedtime melatonin. The edges of the world bleed like watercolors, and your mind weaves new tales from the frayed memories of your day. That makes sense, given that Aftab herself calls nighttime her “biggest source of inspiration.”
A vocalist, composer, and producer who has taken influence from artists as diverse as Billie Holiday, Abida Parveen, and Jeff Buckley, the 39-year-old Aftab has spent her career dreamily eliding the boundaries between jazz,...

We are doing stuff that is indicative of fun,” Arooj Aftab says, quite seriously, in the flat staccato cadence of a test proctor.
The Pakistani-born, Berklee-trained, Brooklyn-based musician is talking about the singing on her new album, Night Reign, out May 31: the doubled vocals, the fresh harmonies, and especially the Auto-Tune that envelops her voice on lead single “Raat Ki Rani” and lends it that spectral pop aura. Aftab remembers asking the mix engineer, “Can you please put, like, T-Pain amounts of Auto-Tune on this and let’s see how it sounds?...

Grasshopper Film has acquired North American distribution rights to “Holding Back the Tide,” Emily Packer’s meditation on New York’s oysters and their transformations in the face of an uncertain future. The film, which world premiered at Doc NYC last fall, plays this week at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
According to the official synopsis, “Holding Back the Tide” is “an impressionistic hybrid documentary that traces the oyster through its many life cycles in New York, once the world’s oyster capital. Now their specter haunts the city through queer characters embodying ancient myth, discovering the overlooked history and biology of the bivalve that built the city. As environmentalists restore them to the harbor, we look to the oyster as a queer icon, entangled with nature, with much to teach about our continued survival.”
Writer-director-producer Emily Packer is a non-binary, queer, experimental filmmaker and editor with an interest in geography and hybrid formats.

When the nominees for last year’s Latin Grammy Awards were announced, no one was surprised that Bad Bunny led with a whopping 10 nominations.
He not only was the year’s most successful Latin artist — he was the pop star of the year. On Billboard’s year-end chart for 2022, he was named top artist, while his fresh, multihit project Un Verano Sin Ti was crowned the No. 1 album of the year, beating out Harry Styles’ Harry’s House and Adele’s 30.
So when it came time to announce the 2023 Grammy nominations, it seemed inevitable that Bad Bunny would be recognized with several nominations, especially since his album launched four top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
But that didn’t happen.
Instead, Bad Bunny garnered a measly three nominations. Yes, he made history by having the first-ever Latin album compete for the show’s top prize — album of the year...

At a certain point last month, someone in London or Los Angeles could listen to Arooj Aftab’s music in their AirPods, tuck Taymour Soomro’s debut novel “Other Names for Love” into their bag and head out to a screening of Saim Sadiq’s film “Joyland,” where outside the theater they would pass a movie poster featuring a painting by Salman Toor.

Music has always been diverse, but perhaps never as diverse as it is in 2022. With big music releases this year ranging from R&b to pop, rap, and country, the landscape sure offers a lot of opportunities to dive into different sounds. However, one genre that’s been exploding these past few years is Latin. While we always had Latin music represented in English markets due to names like Enrique Iglesias and Shakira, this year’s Latin music has truly taken the world by storm. As such, the question remains, will this be the year the Grammys finally acknowledge it properly?

2022 has been a somewhat slow year for new artists so far. While last year we got breakthroughs from acts like The Kid Laroi, Olivia Rodrigo, and Baby Keem, this year has mostly been distinguished by comebacks from big artists like Adele, Harry Styles, and Kendrick Lamar. So with a less obvious slate of top contenders this year, the race for the 2023 Best New Artist Grammy is wide open.
The presumed front-runner right now might be Latto. Her single “Big Energy” has proven to be a smash hit, peaking inside the top-three of the Billboard Hot 100. Latto has also been around for a while now, lurking under the radar with a few mixtapes and EPs, and is now catching her big mainstream break into the pop-sphere. And despite the Grammys’ frequent bias against hip-hop, rappers have taken this award a few times already. Most recently, Megan Thee Stallion won in 2021, a...

There are 86 categories at the Grammy Awards, too many to present during a single prime time telecast, so the awards are handed out in two parts. The main ceremony airs live on CBS at 8:00pm Eastern/5:00pm Pacific, and it’s there we’ll find out who claims the top prizes: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist, among others. But most of the story of this year’s awards is told in the afternoon at the Premiere Ceremony. Read on as I live blog the event and what its results might mean for the prime time kudos. Watch them streaming live online on Grammy.com or on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel starting at 3:30pm Eastern/12:30pm Pacific.
