Courtney D. Armstrong has been elevated to Paramount Pictures Chief Operating Officer for the studio.
He fills the position left by Andrew Gumpert, who exited Paramount in February 2023. We understand it was always part of the succession plan for Armstrong, who has been at the Melrose Ave lot for three years, to ascend to COO. Armstrong was previously the studio’s President of Business Affairs and Administration, with control over those areas as they pertain to live action and animation production, in addition to leading Paramount’s business development team.
Armstrong will continue to report to Paramount Pictures President and Chief Executive Officer Brian Robbins. In his new position, Armstrong will oversee all day-to-day operations across Business Affairs, Legal, as well as business development, for the studio’s live action, animation, and studio group departments.

A “game of chicken” is commonly known as a conflict between two parties where neither wants to yield, but both are hoping to avoid embarrassment and failure.
That seems to be the pervading psychological dynamic right now at Paramount Pictures, as it continues to topple its legacy leadership structure in favor of a streaming-first future under new studio chief Brian Robbins.
“We’re all playing chicken right now,” one insider told Variety, explaining that studio employees are carrying out the work of making movies with no substantive input from Robbins – the former Nickelodeon head who replaced industry statesman Jim Gianopulos as Paramount chairman and CEO earlier this month.
On Friday, Emma Watts, the stalwart production head who was labelled Paramount’s “white knight” when she joined as motion picture group president last summer, was dismissed during a morning meeting with Robbins. The call came after two weeks of Watts trying...

Are you familiar with Atlas Comics? If not, it was a comic book publisher that launched in the 1950s and it ended up evolving into Marvel Comics. However, when Marvel launched out of Altas to become its own brand, not all of the comic book properties followed. There were still a lot of comics that only Atlas was producing.
Well, the rights to all of those Atlas properties were picked up by Ghost Rider producer Steven Paul and he teamed with Paramount Pictures to adapt them into movies. Paramount doesn’t really have many lucrative franchises other than Mission: Impossible and Transformers and a few other Hasbro properties that they have yet to get off the ground.

Paramount Pictures has laid off about 20 staffers in the Viacom film studio’s Finance, Legal, Business & Legal Affairs and Television teams. The cuts happened Tuesday and were detailed in a memo by Paramount COO Andrew Gumpert.
Sources say the total number of layoffs includes some open positions, and impacts about 1.5% of the studio’s total staff.
The layoffs came the same day Paramount announced promotions and a hire in its Paramount TV division as that unit restructures under Nicole Clemens, who was appointed president of Paramount TV in September. Among those noted yesterday: Debra Bergman was upped to Evp/Head of Physical Production and Ken Basin to Evp of Business Affairs. Robert West was hired as VP Production.
Variety was first to note the layoffs today.

A pair of influential watchdogs that monitor how Hispanics are portrayed onscreen have called for a boycott of Paramount Pictures. The National Latino Media Council (Nlmc) is made up of 12 civil rights and advocacy groups that champion Latino representation, including the National Hispanic Media Coalition (Nhmc). Leaders from both organizations assembled Tuesday in Pasadena to unpack a poll of Latinos viewers’ sensibilities, and unveil a list of planned actions against Paramount.
Based on their film studio research from 2012 to 2017 — and UCLA’s latest Hollywood Diversity Report, released in February — the Nhmc found that Paramount had the worst numbers when it came to hiring Latino actors, writers, and directors.

Paramount Television President Amy Powell had earned a reputation as a rogue operator long before her abrupt dismissal on Thursday over racially charged comments, which studio CEO Jim Gianopulos deemed “inconsistent with our company’s values,” according to multiple individuals familiar with the matter.
A rare holdover from the regime of late Paramount CEO Brad Grey, Powell was known as aggressively independent within the studio, the individuals said. She succeeded despite widespread unpopularity and a tendency to act without consulting her boss, the insiders added.
After 14 years at the studio, the last five as president of the TV division, she was vanquished over her response to a tweet. Specifically, insiders familiar with her firing said the executive made insensitive remarks about black women and anger during a recent conference call about an upcoming TV show based on the 1996 movie “The First Wives Club.”

Updated with Powell’s statement: Five years after she was hired to head Paramount TV, Amy Powell has been fired. Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos announced the move to staff in an internal memo Thursday afternoon.
In the memo, Gianopulos noted “multiple individuals” who raised “concerns around comments” made by Powell in a “professional setting, which they believed were inconsistent” with Viacom’s values, something she denies.
“Having spent the past several days conducting a thorough investigation into this matter and speaking to those who were present, our Human Resources and Legal teams came to the same conclusion, and we have made the decision to terminate Amy’s employment, effective immediately,” Gianopulos wrote.
Several hours after the news of her firing got out, Powell on Thursday evening issued a statement disputing the charges.

Former Paramount Television president Amy Powell has denied making racially insensitive comments that led to her being fired from the studio today after a 14-year run.
Paramount Pictures chairman Jim Gianopulos told studio staffers in a memo that Powell was terminated Thursday after complaints from other employees sparked an investigation into her remarks. Powell’s remarks were made last week in what the studio described as “a professional setting.”
A source with knowledge of the situation characterized her comments as racially charged in nature and related to Paramount Television’s adaptation of the 1996 comedy “First Wives Club” as a series for Paramount Network.

Former Paramount TV president Amy Powell has denied making the insensitive and inappropriate comments that led to her firing on Thursday.
“There is no truth to the allegation that I made insensitive comments in a professional setting — or in any setting. The facts will come out and I will be vindicated,” Powell said in a statement to TheWrap.
Her statement came just hours after her dismissal from the company, which was announced in an internal memo from Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos on Thursday afternoon.

The Cloverfield Paradox‘s landmark Netflix deal came about after Paramount grew concerned over the film’s “commercial playability.” Or lack thereof.
Per Variety, Paramount COO Andrew Gumpert touched on The Cloverfield Paradox and its unorthodox journey to release while soliciting questions at the UCLA Law School’s annual Entertainment Symposium. The Julias Onah-directed space oddity (our review) was available to stream via Netflix immediately after Super Bowl Lii back in February, and it’s this stealth release that reportedly cost the online streaming giant around $40m-$50m to distribute worldwide.
That’s quite the eye-watering figure, though Andrew Gumpert firmly believes that The Cloverfield Paradox enjoyed a great deal of success by skipping theaters.
The movie was finished, we all reviewed it together with J.J. and his team. We all decided there were things about it that made us have a pause about its commercial playability in the traditional matter.

Paramount chief operating officer Andrew Gumpert has explained why the Us studio sold the global distribution rights for the The Cloverfield Paradox to Netflix.
In an unorthodox move, the J.J.-Abrams produced film was released unexpectedly by the streaming giant straight after the Super Bowl in February, instead to getting a theatrical release with Paramount. The deal was worth a reported $50m.

The controversial Netflix/Paramount deal for “The Cloverfield Paradox” happened one month into the new year, but it’s bound to go down as one of the biggest industry stories of 2018. The studio quietly sold distribution rights to the third “Cloverfield” installment to Netflix for a reported $40-$50 million, essentially making back the $45 million it spent to produce it. The streaming giant then surprise premiered “Paradox” shortly after the Super Bowl on February 4.
Paramount’s Chief Operating Officer Andrew Gumpert recently defended the decision during a keynote at UCLA’s annual Entertainment Symposium (via Variety). Gumpert joined the studio in January after a 12-year stint at Sony Pictures Entertainment, which means sorting out what to do with “Paradox” was one of his first decisions. The COO admitted that Paramount executives and producer J.J. Abrams all reviewed the movie together and collectively came to the decision that it lacked “commercial playability” if released in theaters.
