Exclusive: Days Of Our Lives is joining the other three daytime dramas in setting return-to-production plans.
Corday Productions, the company behind the venerable NBC soap, on Thursday sent emails to the cast notifying them that taping new episodes would resume on September 1, I have learned. Reps for NBC, Corday and Sony Pictures TV declined comment.
When the show goes back, it may be without one of its key creative auspices, co-executive producer Greg Meng. Daytime Confidential is reporting that Meng has been let go after 30 years with Corday, most recently as SVP. We will update the story as more information becomes available.
Of the other daytime dramas, CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful is in production; it has been shooting new episodes for more than a week now. CBS’ The Young and the Restless just postponed the targeted July 6 return by a week, with July 13 now eyed as the new tentative start date.

It’s a done deal: NBC has renewed its long-running daytime drama series Days Of Our Lives for a record 56th season.
The announcement comes two weeks after NBC Chairman Paul Telegdy at TCA confirmed that the daytime soap will be coming back.
“Of course Days of Our Lives is going to carry on. We love it…. I know that will be good news for the fans,” he said then, later confirming that the plan was for the series would stay on NBC, not move to the upcoming Peacock streaming service.
Renewal negotiations had been going on for months. According to sources, the holdup in reaching a deal was related to distributor Sony Pictures TV finding ways to adjust the show’s business model, including international sales, so they can continue to make it without going in the red. Because of Days Of Our Lives‘ age and declining linear ratings in all day parts,...

“Days of our Lives” has been formally renewed for a record 56th season at NBC.
It was previously reported in November that the show was near a deal for a renewal, though it was not official at that time. The news will no doubt come as a relief to fans, who feared the show had been canceled after the entire cast had been released from their contracts.
“We are most grateful to NBC for their enduring faith in the future of ‘Days of our Lives,’ and we are excited to continue delivering compelling stories to our loyal family of fans into this new decade,” said executive producer Ken Corday.
Set in the fictitious Midwestern town of Salem, “Days of our Lives” centers on the Bradys, Hortons and Dimeras. It airs nationally on NBC in the United States and in more than 25 countries internationally.

Keep calm; ‘Days of Our Lives’ is in fact carrying on. NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy confirmed at the Television Critics Assn. press tour that the long-running daytime drama will be returning for another season on NBC.
“We’re in the middle of knowing very soon [whether] ‘Days of Our Lives’ is going to carry on,” said Telegdy. “We love it. Millions of Americans watch it every week. … I know this will be good news for the fans. I know that someone [at the network is] going, ‘You can’t say that,” but we are of course carrying on with ‘Days of Our Lives.'”
That follows news in November that the entire cast of the series had been released from their contracts. Not long after that, however, sources told Variety that the series was nearing a deal for a renewal for Season 56.

Days of Our Lives is not going anywhere. While the network has not announced a renewal of its longest-running series for a 56th season, NBC Chairman Paul Telegdy at TCA this morning confirmed that the daytime drama will be coming back.

The entire cast of the NBC soap opera “Days of Our Lives” have been released from their contracts, Variety has confirmed.
The daytime drama has run for over 13,000 episodes since first debuting in 1965. The show will go on hiatus at the end of November, though it has shot enough episodes to last through the end of the current broadcast season. However, according to an individual close to the show, the show has found itself well ahead of schedule and the hiatus was always planned to give the cast members time off for the holidays. Should the show get picked up for another season, it would likely happen around the beginning of the year.

Will the Daytime Emmys go on?
The four remaining broadcast soaps – “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of Our Lives,” “General Hospital,” and “The Young and the Restless” – have joined forces by sending a letter to the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, expressing their lack of confidence in NATAS’ current administration.
The four soaps are so serious about their concerns that they are threatening to not participate in future Daytime Emmy Awards unless these issues are addressed.
Multiple sources tell Variety that there’s been disillusionment for some time between the broadcast soaps and NATAS.
The catalyst for this joint letter — which was sent to NATAS chair Terry O’Reilly and interim president and CEO Adam Sharp— was the organization’s recent decision to revoke a Daytime Emmy awarded to actress Patrika Darbo (“The Bay”) in the outstanding guest performer in a digital daytime drama series category. All four daytime soap operas - The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital and The Young and the Restless -
have joined together to demand changes in the voting and accounting practices for the Daytime Emmy Awards and the way the competition is held, according to Deadline.
The joint letter, sent today to National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences chair Terry O'Reilly and interim president and CEO Adam Sharp, is in response to the recent gaffe, in which Patrika Darbo's 2018 Daytime Emmy for her guest-starring role on Amazon soap opera The Bay was rescinded after NATAS found submission errors in her and other categories. Last month, Darbos called out the group for its actions and called for an outside audit “to restore integrity and confidence in” the awards.

We were all shocked and saddened when two-time Daytime Emmy winner Chandler Massey announced he was leaving Days Of Our Lives, and even more shocked and saddened when we learned his last official day on set was last Friday, months before he was scheduled to leave.
Now, our shock and sadness may turn to anger and pins-in-voodoo-dolls, as we learn more about his unexpected departure. TV Guide is reporting that Chandler’s last day was not as “mutual” as we were led to believe:
Two-time Emmy winner Chandler Massey filmed his final scenes as Days of Our Lives’ gay heartthrob Will Horton on Friday, Aug. 23 — only he didn’t know they were his last until he was summoned at the end of his work day to the office of Greg Meng, the soap’s co-executive producer. Two-time Emmy winner Chandler Massey filmed his final scenes as Days of Our Lives' gay heartthrob Will Horton on Friday, Aug. 23 — only he didn't know they were his last until he was summoned at the end of his work day to the office of Greg Meng, the soap's co-executive producer. During this meeting, Meng informed Massey, who had been planning to depart the NBC soap when his contract expired in December, that he would have to leave immediately because a replacement had already been hired. Massey exited the studio sans fanfare — no farewell party, no goodbyes, no nothing — and sources close to the young actor say he was devastated and in tears. His last episode will air on or around Dec. 31.

Neighbours
Neighbors garnered a lot of talk last week because of the show’s first gay kiss and how it was handled. Many thought it was great that it was treated like no big deal in that Chris and Aiden were making out just like many of the other couples at the party had. But some viewers were upset that the kiss was in the background and not the center of the scene, which you would expect given that it was the first gay kiss for the show. While I commend Neighbors for how they handled the kiss, which was quite passionate and not awkward like many kisses between two straight actors can be, it’s symptomatic of the overall problem with this storyline. Like Chris and Aiden’s kiss, too much of the action is happening in the background.

Hollyoaks
I’ve loved a lot of gay characters over the years and Brendan Brady is probably one of my favorites. Because of his dark history and edgy style he’s unique among gay soap characters in just about every respect, and I like that the show takes chances with this bad boy. And it goes without saying that actor Emmett Scanlan is brilliant in the role. But I haven’t been happy with the way he’s been written for the past several months, mostly because it’s the same material we’ve already been through with Brendan, giving the character little chance for growth and leaving the continuing impression the show isn’t sure how to write for him.
I had hoped we might see something fresh for this character when Ash decided to do a thesis on Brendan. It looked as if the...

Good Times, Bad Times
I've read a lot of the commentary about these scenes, and I think Edwin is wildly over-reacting. He acts as if Ron was under some obligation to tell him that was gay, but I don’t think he is. It’s not like it ever came up, and Ron certainly never lied to Edwin about it. I agree with Ron that Edwin is making a big deal about it, mostly because he thinks Ron is after him.
But how does Ron hiding his sexuality, which I don’t feel he did, mean that he is out to snare Edwin? And how would not telling Edwin he was gay help Ron if he really were out to get Edwin? That does not compute to me.
Besides, thus far Ron hasn’t done anything to undermine Lucas and Edwin’s relationship. On the contrary,...

Days Of Our Lives, NBC's longest-running scripted television series, embarks on a new era of romance by bringing back two of its most beloved characters, Deidre Hall ("Marlena Evans") and Drake Hogestyn ("John Black"). Despite 15 nominations for Best Drama over the years, "Days Of Our Lives" manged to win just once -- in 1978. The show, which was snubbed this year, last contended in the top race in 2009 losing to "The Bold & The Beautiful," which claimed the first of two consecutive victories. In Part 1 of our interview with writer Sheri Anderson, the Emmy Award winner revealed how the new trilogy of Days Of Our Lives novels came about, and shared her thoughts on web series and how soap operas can be informative and still entertaining.
In Part 2 below, Anderson discusses her last stint at Days, not cheating the audience, and making a living as a writer.
We Love Soaps TV: How much fun was it to write these novels without having to think about sets or actors?
Sheri Anderson: I developed an animated show at one point and it was the same thing where you'd say, "Wow, I can go anywhere!" I had some of The Powers That Be say after the first novel, "This would make a great movie. We should make this a movie." It has 600 foot yachts in the south of France, superstars, Maseratis and Aston Martins crashing.
