Travis’s frontman Fran Healy was watching TV one afternoon in 1999, with the sound turned down. Something about swingbeat was on MTV. Healy reached for his guitar and began to hum along to the silent video, working his fingers around the chords of a new song. “When it naturally got to a sort of chorus-y part, I started singing, ‘Swing... If you swing, swing, swing, swing,’” Healy said.
The melody took shape and next day Healy took it to his bandmates in the studio. With Andy Dunlop on piano and banjo, bassist Dougie Payne and drummer Neil Primrose, Healy strummed his new song about a children’s swing. The band became engrossed, and cut a demo. Halfway through the chorus, Healy altered “swing” to “sing”. Listening to the playback, he heard a song about the recuperative powers of singing, rather than children in the playground.
The track was recorded some months later in Los Angeles,...

The actor on the thrill of the Harry Potter shop, why she’d like to do more comedy and her latest role
Glasgow-born Kelly Macdonald, 43, began her career as Diane in Trainspotting. Her film credits since have included Gosford Park, No Country for Old Men and the voice of Merida in Disney’s Brave. She has two children with her ex-husband, Travis bassist Dougie Payne. On TV, she has appeared in State of Play, Boardwalk Empire and now stars in BBC1 thriller The Victim which starts tomorrow at 9pm and continues for the next three nights.
In The Victim you star as a grieving mother who, 15 years after her son was murdered, reveals the new identity of his killer. What drew you to the role?
She felt real: sympathetic at times, unlikable at others. The title is great because you’re wondering who the victim is. Reading the script, my allegiances were switching,...

It's been a long five years since Travis - the band credited for paving the way for hit-makers Coldplay, Keane and others - were in the recording studio, but they're back, sounding as big as ever.
Watch Above: HuffPostUK is pleased to be the exclusive hosts of the first single 'Where You Stand' from their seventh album of the same name - which is released on 19 August on their own relaunched label.
The harmonic pop, piano solo and jangling guitars will be instantly recognisable to fans of the Scottish quartet - Fran Healy, Dougie Payne, Andy Dunlop and Neil Primrose - who have recorded this album in London, Norway, New York as well as Berlin's legendary Hansa studios, where the sounds for their breakthrough hit 'The Man Who'.
The band named themselves after the Harry Dean Stanton character Travis Henderson from the film 'Paris, Texas'.

TV gangster drama Boardwalk Empire has finally made a star of Kelly Macdonald. As she prepares for a new series, the Scottish actress talks about working with Scorsese and why the whole celeb thing is 'a wee bit silly'
Until recently, Kelly Macdonald was one of that rare breed of famous people who went unnoticed in public. Not any more. "It's a little bit alarming," she says. "Someone pointed at me in Ikea recently and went, 'You're her!'" She bursts into a giggle, which will recur throughout our meeting, sometimes becoming a hearty laugh, suggesting she doesn't take herself as seriously as people in her profession tend to.
"I just sort of nodded and kept going," she continues of the Ikea encounter. "It's that TV thing. You can be in the biggest film of the year and it will still not have the kind of impact a TV series has.

6:54 - I just got home from a baby shower and am full of cake and the joy of an empty womb and am ready to start this shit.
6:57 - I am being joined for this liveblog by my good friend Les Jamelles Pinot Noir. This no doubt ends in a great deal of Caps Lock and copious use of the word "totes." Prepare ye.
6:58 - The Run Lola Run commercial music tells me it's almost time for the show to start. Also, Carson Daly is happening. Apparently this was NBC's penance for pushing him to 2am.
6:59 - I'm not sure why Brad and Angelina are even there. Angelina's a relatively smart cookie. She Has to know she was only nominated in an effort to make her show up.
7:00 - Is anyone else's cable feed cutting out like it's running on Dsl?
7:01 - First Charlie Sheen joke of the night.

The 31-year-old, who shot to fame in Danny Boyle's 1996 movie Trainspotting, welcomed a baby boy in March but kept the news quiet for nearly a month before Payne confirmed the new arrival on his band's website.
Freddie Peter Payne was born on 9 March weighing eight pounds 11 ounces (3.7 kilograms).
And bassist Payne has expressed his delight at becoming a first-time father.
He writes on the Travis internet page, "It is with huge delight and enormous soppy grins that we can tell you we have a wee (small) boy.
"He is blond, blue-eyed, bouncing and beautiful. mum is doing great and baby is thriving. Dad's mind is blown in the best way possible. Fill your glasses with something fizzy!"...
