After dipping into the world of H.P. Lovecraft in Re-Animator (listen) and checking out an early adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen), somehow we’re already on our third episode of February. And while the holiday doesn’t line up, we couldn’t pass up a chance to revisit Friday the 13th (2009) for its fifteenth anniversary.
In the Marcus Nispel remake, a group of friends travel to the palatial country house of Trent (Travis Van Winkle) near what was once Camp Crystal Lake. As Trent’s girlfriend Jenna (Danielle Panabaker) bonds with Clay (Jared Padalecki) over the disappearance of his sister Whitney (Amanda Righetti), their friends Chewie (Aaron Yoo), Bree (Julianna Guill), Lawrence (Arlen Escarpeta), Nolan (Ryan Hansen) and Chelsea (Willa Ford) are being picked off one by one by Jason Voorhees (Derek Mears).

The struggle to keep movie theaters alive gets very personal in “Showdown at the Grand,” an enjoyable tribute to retro exploitation pictures with Terrance Howard as a movie palace proprietor besieged by diminishing receipts and violent goons. Dolph Lundgren plays the former action star who shows up for a personal appearance, then stays to help save the joint from those agents of unscrupulous developers. More low-key homage than campy cartoon, writer-director Orson Oblowitz’s fourth feature does manage to deliver some tongue-in-cheek mayhem in an extended climax.
The setting is an actual vintage art deco temple for cinema, San Pedro’s Warner Grand, though rather than being managed by the City of Los Angeles (as it is off-screen), it’s kept alive here as a none-too-successful for-profit labor of love by George Fuller (Howard). Terrence Howard is terrific as a cinema owner who hires his ageing movie idol to help him battle corporate goons
‘There are a lot of things to dislike in this world. Nazis. Modern art. Vegans. But above all I despise vampires.” That’s Dolph Lundgren in a growl, wearing a ludicrous wig, and karate-kicking his way through a horde of undead. Lundgren plays ageing action star Claude Luc Hallyday, a veteran of trashy films with trashier titles (Moses v the Nazis!). It’s a supporting role but Lundgren is the main attraction in Orson Oblowitz’s misty-eyed, sentimental, sometimes silly love letter to cinema. The setting is a gorgeous movie palace where the owner has a thing for tough guy Hallyday, watching his 80s action flicks on repeat – funny pastiche clips shot here as little movies-in-a-movie.
To be fair, Terrence Howard is also pretty terrific as cinema proprietor George, whose...

"Stay away from my friends, my theater, and my neighborhood." Shout has debuted the official trailer for an indie action comedy titled Showdown at the Grand, from filmmaker Orson Oblowitz. This trailer has been out for a few weeks, but we're just catching up with it – looks like some harmless fun. It's an 80s action movie homage with a big battle at a vintage cinema. A proud movie theater owner honors action star turned recluse "Claude Luc Hallyday" with a retrospective of his illustrious career but when real estate developers show up to ruin the party, the two new friends must fight off corporate greed in the name of art. Showdown stars Terrence Howard, John Savage, Amanda Righetti, Piper Curda, and Swedish badass Dolph Lundgren as Claude Luc Hallyday. Looks like an entertaining tribute to movies they don't make anymore, and the way theaters used to be. Though it's also fairly cheesy & cliche,...

Last Friday, which happened to be a Friday the 13th, screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift shared some pages from the script they wrote for the unmade sequel to the 2009 version of Friday the 13th (watch it Here). In those pages, we got to read the description of a scene where a character would have been killed by iconic masked slasher Jason Voorhees while riding down a zip line. But those weren’t the only pages Shannon and Swift shared from the script last Friday. They also unveiled a couple pages that reveal what happened to Jason’s dad – and you can read them in this embed:
Ok, since it's #FridayThe13th how about one more? Our sequel script had lots of stuff for long time fans, including returning characters! Let's reveal two of them now: https://t.co/WhNTVuo2Nx pic.twitter.com/yUdnv2L6bL

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift were the writers who cracked the Freddy vs. Jason story and pulled that project out of development hell, where it had been trapped for a decade. Six years later, when Warner Bros. teamed up with Paramount and Platinum Dunes for a Friday the 13th reboot, Shannon and Swift were again the writers. (You can hear all about that Friday the 13th in our latest Wtf Happened video.) Since the reboot made over $91 million at the global box office on a budget of $19 million when it was released in February of 2009, it was no surprise when it was announced that it was going to receive a sequel, to be shot in 3-D and released on August 13, 2010. Then the studios couldn’t agree on the money split, so the sequel was shelved… but not before Shannon and Swift had already written the full script. Today, to celebrate Friday the 13th,...

When you think slashers, your mind immediately goes to the Final Girl. While the term wasn't coined until 1992, it was a prevalent trope throughout the '70s and '80s, namely through such works as "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (Sally Hardesty), "Black Christmas" (Jess Bradford), and "Halloween" (Laurie Strode). These trendsetting heroines cemented the idea that women could be the heroes of their own stories. In many cases, the Final Girl just happened to be the last woman standing through sheer luck; in others, they slashed their way to triumph all on their own. One of the franchises most known for its many Final Girls is "Friday the 13th," which dominated the 1980s and showcased some of the slasher genre's most iconic protagonists.
Throughout its run 一 from the 1980 original to the 2009 remake 一 the series' Final Girls have run the gamut. Some are tough-as-nails warriors from the get-go,...

Whenever Friday the 13th rolls around, there’s only one proper thing to do, and that’s to watch and talk about Friday the 13th. And yes, I’m aware I’m writing this on the Saturday, but the point still stands.
Amongst yesterday’s conversation surrounding the exploits of Crystal Lake’s most notorious hockey enthusiast were some details about the planned sequel to the 2009 reboot that never materialized, released by script writing duo Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.
We talked about it. Ultimately that idea was left behind… because we wanted it for the sequel! Yes, here for the first time ever, can confirm that we had extended flashbacks in the unmade winter sequel with Pamela and Elias. Oh and Pamela was the fucking terrifying one…

No one’s going to argue that the Friday the 13th remake we got back in 2009 was great, but it was still an enjoyable ride for fans of the franchise and mostly harmless, even if it didn’t really offer up anything new or noteworthy. What’s particularly unfortunate about it though is that it may be the last time we see Jason Voorhees on the big screen. At least, for a while.
As you may be aware, the franchise is currently in a state of legal limbo. Long story short, Victor Miller, screenwriter of the original movie, is attempting to take back the rights. Basically, the worst case scenario would see all future Friday the 13th pics released in the United States having to be made without the character of Jason Voorhees. On the flip side, movies made under that banner overseas can include him but are banned domestically.

Script pages posted by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift have revealed that the canned Friday the 13th sequel was going to be set in the winter, a first for the legendary horror franchise.
This being Friday the 13th, Shannon and Swift decided to strike while the iron is hot to post four pages from the scrapped script, confirming that Paramount’s axed reboot, one that was initially hatched as a continuation of the 2009 remake, would have taken place in the winter season, when Camp Crystal Lake was frozen solid. Now how’s that for a haunting visual?
Other pertinent details include a scene in which Jason Voorhees ventures out onto the frozen Crystal Lake while hunting a rather unfortunate hockey player, which was surely meant to be the first of many blood-curdling kills involving the iconic, masked killer. What’s more, Shannon and Swift envisioned a Friday the 13th sequel...

Whether you side with the Occupation or the Resistance, you can rejoice with the news that the USA Network has renewed Colony for a third season.
Multiple outlets, including THR, report that a 13-episode third season of Colony will premiere sometime in 2018 (the first two seasons had January premieres). Created by Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal, the series takes place in a Los Angeles under siege by enigmatic aliens known as "Hosts." While the Hosts and their drones employ murderous methods to keep people in line, it's the humans that work for them that can be the most brutal. The second season finale of the series airs this Thursday, April 6th on USA.

With another Halloween nearly upon us, Jason Voorhees is no doubt swinging his machete and donning his hockey mask on TV screens around the world as horror fans embrace the spirit of the season. But viewers are still waiting for the Crystal Lake killer's return to the big screen, as the new Friday the 13th movie was recently pushed back to a planned October 13th, 2017 release. In an interview with Collider, Platinum Dunes producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form gave an update on the thirteenth Friday the 13th and confirmed that Breck Eisner will indeed direct the film.
Speaking to Collider, Fuller and Form talked about the long journey to get Jason back in theaters following 2009's Friday the 13th. After resisting pressures to make a found footage film, they considered continuing the storyline of Jared Padalecki's Clay and Amanda Righetti's Whitney, but a direct sequel to the 2009 movie couldn't find traction.

At the core of USA Network’s Colony lies the big question: to resist or collaborate with the aliens that have taken over the world? At this year’s Comic-Con, I had the opportunity to participate in roundtable press room interviews with the cast and crew of Colony to discuss both sides of the Occupation, what’s to come in season two, and much more.
Colony co-creator / executive producer / writer Carlton Cuse on expanding the show’s world in season two and increasing the sci-fi elements:
Carlton Cuse: The show will be more dystopic in season two. We intentionally tried to steer away from the traditional Blade Runner, rogue level of dystopia. Proxy Snyder was a guy who thought, “I’ll try to leave things as much the same as they were in order to give people the best experiences under this occupation.” It didn’t work out too well for him,...

Colony, Season 1
Created by Ryan Condal and Carlton Cuse
Premieres Thursday, January 14th at 10 pm Et on USA Network
One episode watched for review
Writer and Producer Carlton Cuse has had a very prolific career, being involved with two series, The Strain and Bates Motel, that are currently on the air. One of the most famous shows he’s been involved in, however, is the ABC series Lost, which ended in 2010. Unwilling to rest with working on only two shows, Cuse is set to reunite with Lost star Josh Holloway on his new series on USA, Colony, which Cuse co-created with Ryan Condal. Unfortunately, despite the pedigree, the show itself shows little promise, as its hamstrung by generic plotlines and poorly developed characters.
One of the key issues with Colony is that its world-building provides nothing compelling, instead only raising numerous questions that the show seemingly has no interest in answering.

From comic-book adaptations to sci-fi, fantasy and horror. Here are the new geek-skewed shows coming to Us TV in 2016...

So there’s a lot of comic-book adaptations coming up in 2016 from Marvel, DC and others, but genre TV is represented across the board with science-fiction, fantasy and horror represented at pretty much every network and cable channel in the Us.
Here's some of the geek TV that will be making its way to us from the Us next year.
