John Irwin has produced dozens of stand-up comedy specials for stars including Norm Macdonald, John Mulaney, Hannah Gadsby and Adam Sandler.
Irwin Entertainment, which he founded in 2004, is currently up for an Emmy for Netflix’s “Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special” and was previously nominated for Netflix’s “Hannah Gadsby: Douglas.”
Irwin got his start popping popcorn for “Saturday Night Live” honcho Lorne Michaels in 1990, the year that Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade and Chris Rock joined the show. Those connections helped form the foundation of his own comedy career as an in-demand producer. So, he has a lot of experience getting the best out of talent in live productions.
“I’ve really learned over the years, there is an art to it,” Irwin told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “You’re creating a real environment. You want that perfect vibe for both the audience and the comic,...

“Nothing Special” is the final comedy special from former “Saturday Night Live” star Norm Macdonald, who passed away from illness last September. Netflix was scheduled to record it this year in front of a live audience. Fortunately, the comedian recorded the set at home last year. The spirit of “Black Panther” and Chadwick Boseman still lives on. The Television Academy gave one last honor to the late actor’s greatness with an Emmy nomination Tuesday morning.
With the announcement of the Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, Boseman received a posthumous nom for outstanding character voice-over for his famous role of T’Challa in the animated series “What If…?” from Disney+ and Marvel Studios.
Boseman also received a posthumous Oscar nomination for his performance in George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Anthony Hopkins ultimately won that year for his work in “The Father.”
Boseman, who died of colon cancer in August 2020 at 43, has a legacy that remains prominent in pop culture and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially with the upcoming sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” scheduled to hit theaters later this year. The late Norm Macdonald has a final gift to deliver to the world as the beloved comedian taped a secret one-hour stand-up comedy special before his passing last September. Macdonald was working on new material for a Netflix special while undergoing treatment for acute leukemia, a disease he quietly lived with for nine years. In case “things went south,” the SNL alum wanted to get something on tape, so he shot an entire hour’s worth of material in his living room in a single take. “His test results were not good, so during the heart of Covid-19 pandemic and literally the night before going in for a procedure, he wanted to get this on tape just in case — as he put it — things went south,” said Macdonald’s longtime producing partner Lori Jo Hoekstra (via The Hollywood Reporter). “It was his intention to have a special to share if something happened.

Before his death last September, comedian Norm Macdonald filmed one final stand-up routine alone in his living room. Streaming giant Netflix will release the posthumous special, titled Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special — a moniker the comedian chose himself — on May 30.

While this version of Nothing Special was not originally meant to be the final product, Covid restrictions prevented him from filming in front of an audience,” Lori Jo Hoekstra, Norm’s long-time producing partner and executive producer of the special,...

Before his untimely death last September at the age of 61, comedian Norm Macdonald filmed a final stand-up special in his living room. The one-hour special, shot in a single take, will be released on Netflix on May 30, 2022, under the title of "Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special."
While it's not unusual for musicians or actors to release work posthumously, it's something of a rarity for a deceased comedian to have a special come out like this. Norm Macdonald may now be in the running for a posthumous Emmy. Netflix pulled a May surprise on Thursday, revealing that a final stand-up special from the legendary comedian, who died in September, will launch on May 30. The streamer confirmed that the special will be submitted for consideration, presumably in the outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) category.
Titled “Nothing Special,” the show will premiere a day before the May 31 cut-off date for Emmy eligibility. Despite a tremendous career in television, Macdonald had never been nominated for an Emmy.
According to Netflix, “Nothing Special” was shot during the summer of 2020, in the middle of lockdown due to the pandemic. Macdonald reportedly self-taped an hour-long set alone in his own living room, and performed it in a single take. The title “Nothing Special” was reportedly Macdonald’s own idea. The special is executive produced by the comedian’s longtime producing partner, Lori Jo Hoekstra.

“Norm Macdonald Has a Show,” and it’s so stilted and strange, that it’s hard to understand what, exactly, it’s trying to do. Even David Letterman — who’s known Macdonald for years, produces the series, and was the one to suggest he do it in the first place — had to pause halfway through their half-hour interview to marvel at the sheer weirdness of what was happening. “I feel like I’m on a show in another country,” Letterman remarked, immediately inspiring a wave of giggles from Macdonald, his sidekick Adam Eget, and assorted crewmembers lurking just offscreen.
It’s a moment that, much to Macdonald’s delight, repeats itself over and over again in each episode as he, Eget, and a single guest take the sparse stage for meandering conversations. Norm Macdonald has a show, and Chevy Chase has a startling connection to Bob Dylan. Only one of those statements is the name of a new Netflix series (or true), but this trailer explains both.
The premiere season of Netflix’s Norm Macdonald has a Show launches Sept. 14 (all ten 30-minute episodes debut at once), and promises to showcase the former Saturday Night Live player at his driest. Does Drew Barrymore miss cocaine? Has Judge Judy been to a strip club? He asks, they answer.
Among the other guests of the talk show’s premiere season are David Spade, David Letterman, Jane Fonda, M. Night Shyamalan, Michael Keaton, Billy Joe Shaver and Lorne Michaels. Macdonald’s sidekick is Adam Eget, who filled the same spot on Macdonald’s podcasts.
One of the more surprising moments of the trailer? Jane Fonda thinks Macdonald resembles Marlon Brando.

Netflix is taking another try at a comedic talk show format with the Sept. 14 launch of “Norm Macdonald Has a Show.”
The “Saturday Night Live” alum has set “SNL” boss Lorne Michaels, David Letterman, Jane Fonda, Michael Keaton, Chevy Chase, Judy Sheindlin, and M. Night Shyamalan as guests. Netflix has ordered 10 half-hour episodes from Lionsgate TV, which will be released all at once.
Plans for the “Norm Macdonald” launch come on the heels of Netflix’s cancellation on Aug. 17 of two topical talk shows, “The Break With Michelle Wolf” and “The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale.” Netflix ordered Macdonald’s program to series in March.
Wolf came into her show with major momentum after her turn at the White House Correspondents Association dinner made headlines in April. “The Break” served up fresh episodes on Sunday nights. The quick hook for a show from a rising-star comedian suggests that viewership...

Netflix is snatching up some of the biggest names in the comedy world. Add Norm Macdonald to the list.
Macdonald has signed up for 10 episodes of “Norm Macdonald Has a Show,” which the comedian referenced on Twitter early Friday.

The news may not come as a shock to fans, especially after the comedian revealed Netflix’s interest in a Reddit Ama back in January. But along with Friday’s news comes some additional official details. Co-host of the “Norm Macdonald Live” Adam Eget will also be joining this new Netflix venture, which will maintain some of the current show’s format: a famous guest and an informal chat. “Norm Macdonald Has a Show” will add the occasional outside-the-studio glimpse at “Norm’s world.”

Comedy Central is adding a second sports news/commentary show. The cable network has picked up Sports Show with Norm Macdonald with an eight-episode order. The new series is slated to begin production this month and is scheduled to premiere in April. Sports Show with Norm Macdonald will feature former Weekend Update anchor Macdonald’s comedic take on topical and controversial stories from the sports world. It will be taped in front of a live studio audience and will cover all sports – from the popular to the obscure. It is not clear if this show is being eyed as a companion or alternative to Comedy Central's Onion SportsDome, which launched last month. On the political news/commentary side, the network has two companion series, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Sports Show will be executive produced by Macdonald, Marc Gurvitz, Lori Jo Hoekstra and Jackhole Productions’ Daniel Kellison.
