The Pixies have parted ways with bassist Paz Lenchantin after a decade-long run with the band. They’ll be joined by former Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson when they kick off a European tour on March 8 in Dublin, Ireland.
The news of Lenchantin’s exit from the group came via a curiously dry statement from the group. “We’re grateful for Paz’s many contributions,” they wrote, “and wish her all the very best going forward.”

Billie Eilish, Peter Gabriel, Bootsy Collins, Sheryl Crow, and many other musicians have united to raise awareness of gun control via a new initiative called Artist for Action to Prevent Gun Violence. The goal, in Eilish’s words, is to “end the gun violence epidemic.” Those artists — as well as Nile Rodgers, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild, Rufus Wainwright, Pixies’ Joey Santiago, Soffi Tukker, LP, and Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor — ask people to volunteer, donate, and vote to raise awareness around the issue.

Most people would agree that Nirvana’s music embodies the spirit of Generation X, yet they never managed to write a song worthy of becoming number one. In fact, they never even breached the top five. However, one song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” managed to get close and went on to become the anthem of the grunge era.

Nirvana’s biggest hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 list in 1992 and remained on the chart for 20 weeks. Despite never breaking into the top five, the track is now considered one of the greatest songs of all time. It has since made it to the top of many prominent ranking lists, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

Over three decades after famously alluding to Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s groundbreaking art film Un Chien Andalou on the raucous opening track to 1989’s Doolittle, Pixies have returned to their roots with the surrealist new single, “Dregs Of The Wine.”
Anchored by a rhythmic bass riff reminiscent of the band’s early output, “Dregs Of The Wine” marks the first writing credit for longtime guitarist Joey Santiago. “I guess I was in kind of a zombie state, just playing,” he said in a release, discussing how the song came to be.

This past winter, Pixies decamped to Guilford, Vermont to record their first new album in three years, Doggerel. While the album won’t be arriving until Sept. 30, fans can get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the record in a new short documentary.
The clip opens with frontman Black Francis offering one side of how the Doggerel sessions came about. “Fortunately my kids are old enough now that they’re not gonna burn the place down or anything, so I just said, ‘Guys, just leave me alone for a couple of weeks.

The Pixies — frontman Black Francis, bassist Paz Lenchantin, drummer David Lovering, and guitarist Joey Santiago — sit down with Andy Greene to discuss their new album Beneath the Eyrie and their whole career in a new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast.
Among many other topics, they discussed playing their very first concert (Boston, 1986), the perils of opening for U2 on a 1992 leg of the Zoo TV tour, the very smooth experience of opening for Weezer earlier this year, the difficulties of introducing new music to an audience hungry for nostalgia,...

Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies’ calling card and on Beneath the Eyrie, their third post-reunion album, the alt-rock icons indulge everything from jaunty, old-timey Kurt Weill oom-pah rhythms to 10-foot waves of surf guitar. Frontman and chief songwriter Black Francis has said that the group embraced their most “gothic” urges with the record’s music (though he never comes off sounding like Rozz Williams) and the album is a bit darker and a little more muted than their other recent offerings.

Pixies will issue a new studio album in September and document the recording process with an upcoming behind-the-scenes podcast, “Past Is Prologue, Pixies.” The alt-rock band recorded their as-yet-untitled seventh LP with producer Tom Dalgety, who helmed their most recent record, 2016’s Head Carrier.
The quartet — singer-guitarist Black Francis, guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist-singer Paz Lenchantin, drummer David Lovering — wrote the album throughout 2018 and recorded it in December at Dreamland Recordings near Woodstock, New York. Kim Deal, the bassist for The Pixies, has decided to leave the band. The other three members of the alternative-rock band announced her departure on the Pixies' Facebook page Friday (June 14).
In the official message posted, there isn't too much information about why Deal left the band she joined 27 years ago. Signed by Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, the short note reads:
"We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best."
The cordial tone indicates that Deal's departure is not the result of some big disagreement between band members. That was not the case back...

Pixies performed a special 'secret' gig for their fan club members in California last night (November 19). The gig was part of the group's current Doolittle tour, where they have played their 1989 second album at 19 of America's secondary cities. Bass player Kim Deal told the crowd at the start of the gig: "We're doing a lot of songs that we haven't done in a while - our setlist is like, two pages, so just get comfortable." They proceeded to play 31 songs from their back catalogue at the Music Box venue in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Their two-hour set started with 'Bone Machine', before they jokingly laughed on stage after messing up the intro. Joey Santiago also played his guitar part on 'Vamos' on his iPhone. Pixies will complete their tour with gigs at Napa Uptown Theatre tonight (November 20) and tomorrow (more)...

Pixies' last record, "Trompe le Monde", was released in 1991 and the band split two years later. They reunited for a series of concerts in 2004 but have yet to release a new album.
And they have now confirmed they are considering heading back into the studio to lay down new tracks - after some encouraging words from U2 frontman, Bono.
Guitarist Joey Santiago tells Spinnermusic.co.uk, "Bono even asked... He's like, 'Please make a record!'... we can't leave that unturned. That would frustrate me. It would. I think we should do it. But it's up to everybody... That talk about making a record will be in the forefront next because it'll be time, you know. It'll be time."
"We've definitely gelled as a unit and hopefully when we can all bury the hatchet - and we have - maybe we'll go in there and hope for the best."...

He has been known as Frank Black and Black Francis, but when he was born on this day 45 years ago, the frontman of the Pixies was called Charles Thompson IV. No matter what you call him, he has plenty to celebrate on his birthday, as Black Francis helped invent alternative rock and was part of an incredible group who didn't need to go to the mainstream because the mainstream came to them.
Francis grew up shuttling back and forth between Boston (where he was born) and Los Angeles. He eventually settled in Boston and started a band with Joey Santiago, a friend he met while in college at the University of Massachusetts. They recruited bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering, and the Pixies were born. The dynamic songwriting, razor-sharp playing and Francis' obtuse, literate lyrics made the group an instant success among indie-minded music fans when their debut Ep...

“Each age, it is found, must write its own books; or rather, each generation for the next succeeding. The books of an older period will not fit this.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson “You think I’m dead but I sail away on a wave of mutilation.” —Pixies, “Wave of Mutilation” Black Francis of the Pixies during the Doolittle tour, Chicago, 2009. Photograph by Charlie Clark. Are the Pixies old, or is the story of their music just beginning? I found myself pondering this question during last night’s sold-out concert at Hammerstein Ballroom, in New York City, which doubled as a 20th-anniversary celebration of the band’s indispensable album Doolittle. The Pixies played the album front-to-back, framing it with a few B-sides—some “so obscure we had to learn them”—and then capping the night with an encore of favorites from other albums. But back to the question. Physically, the band’s...

The good news is the Pixies are doing a very special tour to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their classic album "Doolittle." The bad news is the they are only playing Europe. Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering will open the tour in Dublin on Oct. 1. Tickets go on sales Friday, July 3. The band will perform "Doolittle" in its entirety, as well as the B-sides associated with the project. As a little refresher course, "Doolittle" was the Pixies' second album and its first released internationally. It reached No. 8 on the U.K. charts. Among the top tracks...
