A funny thing happened on the way to reforming the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The entertainment industry started imagining the permanent demise of the corrupt 79-year-old cabal of Hollywood correspondents. While some publicists, talent, and distributors consider the January Golden Globes telecast as a vital link in the awards ecosystem, others are rooting for the HFPA to disappear forever.
Back on February 25, 2021, under pressure from NBC, which broadcasts the annual Golden Globes and is trying to negotiate down the 8-year 500-million TV rights deal signed in 2018, the beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association vowed major change. NBC canceled the 2022 Golden Globes show to allow the HFPA time to institute a long list of reforms, which began taking shape in April 2021. Also holding the group’s feet to the fire was a consortium of publicists and Amazon, Netflix, and Warner Media, which refused to supply talent for interviews until long overdue reforms were made.

In Tre’vell Anderson’s L.A. Times piece “There is room for everyone: 14 film critics on making media more inclusive,” he states, “Those who work for the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, the Hollywood Reporter and Variety, among others, receive preferential treatment for talent interviews and screening access. And traditional publications tend to have traditional critics. The result is a community of discourse around film and art that is fairly homogeneous and ignores many members of the filmmaking and filmgoing communities across all demographics.”
Year after year, the same problems with opportunity and access arise. You see, being a freelance film critic can present barriers to doing the job. Those writers not attached to a ‘reputable’ outlet or aren’t a big enough presence on social media, are often overlooked when opportunities to cover film/tv arise.

The Golden Globes have announced their new set of members to join their organization, marking the largest class in their history.
Of the 21 new members, their demographic breakdowns are as follows:
48% identify as women 29% identify as Black 24% identify as Asian 29% identify as Latinx 19% identify as Middle Eastern/North African
The 21 journalists, which resulted from an outreach effort by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, increased the current membership by 20%. The organization anticipates adding a similar-sized group in 2022.
“We are thrilled to welcome these new members into our family,” said HFPA president Helen Hoehne. “We are building a new organization, one that is not focused on fulfilling quotas, but instead has diversity and inclusion at its core.”
“As a committee, we’re proud of this first-class we’ve invited to join the reimagined HFPA. They’re a group of well-respected journalists from around the world who will bring a variety of unique perspectives to this organization,...

The embattled Hollywood Foreign Press Association has added five new people to its nine-member Credentials Committee. The group helps select new members, a key element in the Golden Globes organization’s efforts to address an admitted lack of diversity among the once-insular group.
The new committee members are Tre’Vell Anderson, Terry Anzur, Bel Hernandez, Toni Moston and Dr. Allissa Richardson. Michele Manelis, Barbaros Tapan and Alessandra Venezia were added in August. The HFPA said in its announcement today that “a class of new members to be announced within the week.”
The Credentials Committee is tasked with vetting applicants for membership according to new guidelines adopted in August. Those guidelines no longer limit membership to print journalism. They also open the pool of applicants to any journalist living and working in the U.S. Prospective members must submit eight pieces of work from the past two years. There is no longer...

Five “journalism professionals” who are not members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have accepted invitations to join the embattled organization’s credentials committee, meaning they and four current HFPA members will be the ones screening membership applications moving forward, with the goal of substantially increasing the number of Black journalists who get to vote for the Golden Globe Awards.
The HFPA has been under fire since February when a Los Angeles Times article revealed that there are currently zero Black members among the roughly 90 Globes voters.

Mere hours after Cicely Tyson’s death, the multi-award winning actress’ just-published memoir is the bestselling book in America.
Released on January 26, Just As I Am has hit No. 1 on Amazon. However, it looks like you won’t be able to get your hands on the book anytime soon.
Published by HarperCollins, the 432-page book has proven such an obvious draw since Tyson’s death at the age of 96 on January 28 that it is “temporarily out of stock,” according to Amazon. No indication when Just As I Am will be back in stock on the Everything Store.
However, before you despair, an audio version of the memoir is still available from Amazon and others. To make that an even more alluring prospect, Tyson herself narrates in part on the audiobook, along with her How To Get Away with Murder co-star Viola Davis and Robin Miles.

Laverne Cox has been and still is changing the game when it comes to the representation of the trans community and Black people in film and TV. She continues to bolster this message of inclusion of marginalized voices as an executive producer on Netflix’s Sam Feder-directed Disclosure. More than just a documentary, it’s a call to action as well as a lesson in history that has been swept under the rug.
When it comes to representation of the trans community in media, it has been more harmful than helpful, perpetuating a negative stigma of violence, shame and ridicule in regards to the trans community with no room for nuance. Disclosure starts a long-overdue journey to undo some of those portrayals.
Like all underrepesented communities, the trans experience is not a monolith, and it hasn’t portrayed authentically until recently with series such as Pose and Transparent. Before this groundbreaking series,...

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to the Sam Feder-directed documentary Disclosure. The feature-length docu is set to debut on the streaming platform on June 19 — a perfect release date considering June is Pride Month.
Disclosure made its premiere at Sundance earlier this year and puts a spotlight on transgender representation in TV and film while showing how it has impacted how Americans feel about members of the trans community and how it has taught trans people to feel about themselves.
Feder not only puts members of the trans community front and center but he also made sure that they were represented behind the camera as well. This way, it was a film about trans people made by trans people, marking a genuine effort of authenticity.
