The National Cartoonists Society gave him its first lifetime achievement award in 2014.
He attended classes at Parsons School of Design in his teens.
He started out as an illustrator at DC Comics in the late 1940s. He was hired at MAD magazine in 1956, where he provided caricatures of movie and TV stars, politicians, and other famous people for 55 years.
He often worked with his long time colleague at Mad magazine satirist Frank Jacobs (Lincoln, Nebraska, 30 May 1929- 5 April 2021, Tarzana, California).
Created the classic poster art for American Graffiti (1973).
