Vanessa Bryant, the late NBA star Kobe Bryant’s widow, has been criticized for not doing more for the black community. After Kobe’s death, she inherited his wealth, which included a $600 million estate.
During his career, Kobe made millions from his time at the NBA, where he played as a shooting guard and won five NBA rings.
He also made millions through partnerships. Kobe became a brand ambassador for Nike and was among the first stars to sign a shoe deal before he retired in April 2016.
On January 26, 2020, Kobe, along with their 13-year-old daughter, Gianna Bryant, and seven others, died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. A jury later awarded Vanessa damages after police leaked photos of the crash site.
When he died, Nike decided to relaunch several of their signature lines made famous by Kobe. The brand made a promotional video discussing Kobe’s personality and dedication to the game.

Basketball Wives is currently in its 10th season, and the biggest critique is that not many cast members are married to NBA players on the show, despite its title. There have been discussions on social media regarding why actual wives have been hesitant to join, especially since the NBA boasts many long-term couples, one of which was Kobe and Vanessa Bryant. But Vanessa was reportedly asked to join on several occasions.

While nominees mainly attend the prestigious Oscars award ceremony - sometimes with their spouses and other times with their children or siblings - when it comes to the Oscars afterparties, most of Hollywood's best and brightest make the invite list, film involvement or not. At the Vanity Fair Oscars party on March 12, Vanessa Bryant, 40, and her daughter Natalia Bryant, 20, were in attendance looking glamorous in matching black floor-length gowns. While Vanessa's was a sequined number, Natalia's dress was off the shoulder and featured trains flowing from the sleeves.
In 2018, Vanessa attended the Oscars with her late husband, NBA player Kobe Bryant, when he won the Oscar for best animated short film for "Dear Basketball," a six-minute onscreen telling of his poem of the same name, which traces his love of basketball from youth to his NBA success. Queen B hit the stage Saturday for what was billed as the unofficial opening of the Atlantis the Royal Hotel in Dubai. Her production company, Parkwood Entertainment, released a short clip of the fireworks that went off before Beyonce belted out her first tune, which was rendition of Etta James’ 1960 classic “At Last.”
According to a news release following the performance, Beyoncé was accompanied by Firdaus, a 48-person all-female orchestra, mentored by Academy Award-winning composer, A.R. Wade then kicks the ball out to Kobe Bryant, open and just beyond the three point line.
“I found him across the court, he jabbed, raised up and hit a three. It was at that moment that we realized it was over,” recalled Wade Thursday night while standing on the red carpet for the Netflix documentary The Redeem Team outside Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Hollywood. Kobe Bryant’s widow was awarded 16 million as part of a 31 million jury verdict Wednesday against Los Angeles County for deputies and firefighters sharing grisly photos of the NBA star, his 13-year-old daughter and other victims killed in a 2020 helicopter crash.
The nine jurors unanimously agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that the photos invaded her privacy and caused emotional distress. She cried quietly as it was read.
The jury deliberated for four-and-a-half hours before reaching the verdict on Kobe Bryant Day, which is celebrated in L.A. on Aug. 24 because it represents his jersey numbers — 8 and 24 — and is the day after his birthday. Tuesday would have been Bryant’s 44th birthday.
An attorney for the county declined comment on the verdict outside the courtroom.
