At the end of the 2001 movie “Monsters, Inc.,” the titular company decides to cut ties with tradition and do away with human children’s screams as a power source in favor of laughter. It was a fun tag that put a nice bow on Sulley’s character growth after meeting the human Boo. What the movie doesn’t show is whether the larger world of Monstropolis will be open to such a drastic change to their traditions and culture. That is at the heart of Disney+’s “Monsters at Work,” which, in its second season, brought workplace existentialism and the environmental revolution to the popular Pixar franchise — along with the surprise return of Steve Buscemi’s Randall Boggs. (More on that later.)
“The end of ‘Monsters, Inc.’ is great for the audience, but that doesn’t necessarily extend to the larger city and the larger world,” “Monsters at Work” showrunner Kevin Deters told IndieWire.

There’s an admirable ambition to Jack Begert’s directorial debut, Little Death. The film, which premiered at Sundance, announces its intentions with an early scene of communal complaint. At dinner, Martin Solomon (David Schwimmer), a TV writer with directorial aspirations, laments the state of his industry. In addition to their disdain for lazy and too-sensitive audiences, he and his friend, Augustus (Fred Melamed), discuss the limitations of narrative filmmaking. Augustus argues that television allows writers to explore the interiority of multiple characters, whereas films can only really sustain one point of view.
With Little Death, Begert tries to prove Augustus wrong. The director, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Dani Goffstein, constructs a story plunging viewers into the ravaged emotional lives of different characters. It tries to stretch the bounds of the narrative form, to upend convention and encourage us to rethink our relationship to storytelling. It aims...

"As Above, So Below" is one of the better found-footage horror films to emerge in the wake of the one-two punch that was "Cloverfield" in 2008 and "Paranormal Activity" in 2009. Where many of its peers struggled to put a fresh spin on the subgenre's tropes, the Dowdle Brothers' 2014 flick is a pulpy Indiana Jones-lite action-adventure that cleverly incorporates mythical elements like the philosopher's stone -- or, as we uncultured Yanks call it, the sorcerer's stone -- and the Nine Circles of Hell from Dante Alighieri's epic 14th-century poem "Divine Comedy." Admittedly, it doesn't go so far as to reinvent the found-footage wheel, nor does it overcome some of the format's worst tendencies. But it does breathe a little more life into that formula, especially when the action inevitably devolves into people incessantly shaking the camera as they run screaming for their lives.
Of course, the biggest weapon in the film's arsenal is its setting.

Aubrey Plaza and other cast members from 2013’s Monsters University will return to voice their characters again for the upcoming second season of Monsters at Work on Disney+.
Disney Pixar’s 2001 classic Monsters Inc. introduced the world to Mike and Sully, famously brought to life by Billy Crystal and John Goodman, respectively. Then, in 2013, audiences got the story of how the two pals met during their college days in Monsters University.
The 2021 sequel series, Monsters at Work, saw the characters in a state of upheaval, as their society switched from scream power to laugh power, much to the initial chagrin of Ben Feldman’s Tylor Tuskmon, the show’s lead. Little has been said by Disney about Monsters at Work’s second season, beyond that it’s in development.

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift were the writers who cracked the Freddy vs. Jason story and pulled that project out of development hell, where it had been trapped for a decade. Six years later, when Warner Bros. teamed up with Paramount and Platinum Dunes for a Friday the 13th reboot, Shannon and Swift were again the writers. (You can hear all about that Friday the 13th in our latest Wtf Happened video.) Since the reboot made over $91 million at the global box office on a budget of $19 million when it was released in February of 2009, it was no surprise when it was announced that it was going to receive a sequel, to be shot in 3-D and released on August 13, 2010. Then the studios couldn’t agree on the money split, so the sequel was shelved… but not before Shannon and Swift had already written the full script. Today, to celebrate Friday the 13th,...

Tacoma Fd is one of the funniest and wackiest workplace comedies. The truTV series follows a crew of firefighters in one of the rainiest cities in America. As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

Exclusive: Actors Mark McKinney and Daniel Ings have signed on to star in the comedy road movie A Rush of Blood.
We understand British filmmaker Tristan Shepherd will direct the pic from a screenplay he also wrote. Billed as a “comedy, thriller, road trip movie,” the plot follows a British-Canadian couple, who get their last shot at fulfilling their professional ambitions — and any hope of reinvigorating their marriage — when their independent film is selected for Sundance. However, when they accept a ride to Park City with Reegan, a young, self-styled film reporter, who becomes increasingly maniacal as the journey unfolds, their dream slowly turns into a nightmare – more frightening than any film plot they could have ever devised. McKinney will play a character named Larry, while Ings will suit up as a character named Brian.

A perfect way to plan a trip to Thailand — the country where Mike White plans to film season three of The White Lotus — is to combine beachy adventures (such as Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley once had at the Amanpuri resort on Phuket) with a journey to the mountainous north and a stint in the epicurean capital of Bangkok.
“One of the absolute highlights of my tour around the globe with Peacock’s travel docuseries Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss were some epic adventures in Thailand, the jewel of Southeast Asia,” Rainn Wilson tells THR. “This peaceful culture made up of so many united tribes has at its center the concept of sanuk, a spiritual/cultural concept of finding a loving, fun-filled pleasure in whatever you are doing.”
For sand and surf there are countless possibilities in a country with seemingly infinite coast, not to mention many islands.

Vietnam — where Netflix’s new romantic comedy A Tourist’s Guide to Love, starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Scott Ly and Ben Feldman, was filmed — is reigniting interest in traveling to the country, long a beloved destination of foodies and nature lovers.
Feldman — who recently shared his Vietnam travel diary with THR — visited Hoi An in central Vietnam and savored his stay at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An (from $855 a night). “Hoi An is just the most charming city on planet Earth. It has this Venetian-style canal going through it, and at night, when the sun goes down, they light all these beautiful lanterns and make wishes on them and set them off into the water. I would go back to Hoi An in a second,” says Feldman.

I went to Vietnam in spring 2022 to film A Tourist’s Guide to Love while the country was still closed to Westerners [because of the pandemic], so it was really special. It felt like we were kind of sneaking in. I love Rachael Leigh Cook, and this is a passion project for her. She was producing and starring in it, and she reached out asking if I’d be willing to come to Vietnam for a little bit. I didn’t ask any other questions.
The movie itself is very much a love letter to Vietnam. People there were very excited it was opening back up and there was a movie shooting there. Our crew — by and large Vietnamese and a really, really great group of people — hadn’t worked in two years. Everybody tells you before you go to Vietnam that they’re just the nicest, greatest people, but it’s still surprising to see how true that is.

Rachael Leigh Cook has done all that: She’s been a teen breakout star in an iconic high school comedy (“She’s All That”), transitioned to cringe sponsored movies (“Spirit Halloween”), and made the leap to Hallmark Christmas queen (“Tis the Season to Be Merry”). Now, she’s deftly parlayed her everywoman likability into the sweet made-for-Netflix movie “A Tourist’s Guide for Love.”
Yes, “made-for-Netflix” is a category all on its own. While “The Irishman” is considered to be a Netflix Original, “made-for-Netflix” separates the mass-produced movies like the nearly-perfect “Falling for Christmas” and calming background noise of “Murder Mystery 2” from the real Oscar contenders. It’s a sliding scale of quality under the streaming titan’s content umbrella, and Cook’s latest film, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” feels like an adaptation of a sweet viral BookTok romance novel — in the best way possible.

By the time the title card drops in “A Tourist’s Guide To Love” (ten minutes in — the Netflix rom-com equivalent of the 40-minute wait in “Drive My Car”), we know exactly what we’re in for: The heartbroken heroine at the film’s center is going to experience a life-altering perspective shift via romance when embarking on a work trip. Acting as a travelogue for Vietnam with an adorable romantic comedy happening in the foreground, this sweetly spirited story isn’t terribly dissimilar from the streamer’s other offerings like “Love in the Villa” or “Resort to Love,” sating any viewers suffering from stunted wanderlust. Funny, poignant and simultaneously progressive and regressive, it may not add up to five-star escapism, but it’s a jovial jaunt worth taking.
High-powered Los Angeles travel agent Amanda Riley (Rachael Leigh Cook) is used to going above and beyond for her clientele, but not necessarily for herself.

"This trip has shown me that I wasn't actually lost, I just wasn't where I was supposed to be." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for A Tourist's Guide to Love, a new adventure romantic comedy from Netflix arriving for streaming later in April. This is half a Vietnamese production, as it is set in Vietnam when a woman heads there to learn about the tourist industry. Along the way she finds adventure and romance with her Vietnamese expat tour guide when they decide to reroute the tour bus in order to explore life and love off the beaten path. Of course it's a sweet story about love and about travel and how gorgeous a place like Vietnam is – criticizing the tourism industry while it's also inviting everyone to hey, come over and visit the country. Rachael Leigh Cook stars (and produces) as Amanda, along with Scott Ly, Missi Pyle,...

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for…well, a lot of things. But mainly for “Abbott Elementary” Season 2.
Is there anything as satisfying as the inevitable kiss in a slow-burn TV romance? It’s a tough feeling to beat, based on the trope’s popularity from the days of Sam and Diane on “Cheers” up until more recent television comedies (spoilers ahead). Watching two characters kiss after episodes or years of romantic and sexual tension feels like cause for celebration — even if their storylines are so tangled that they may not find that coveted happy ending just yet.
“Abbott Elementary” joined the list this week (finally) with “Teacher Conference,” the 16th episode of Season 2, written by Quinta Brunson. The episode features a much-anticipated kiss between Janine and Gregory that delighted viewers and will undoubtedly complicate its characters’ lives, like all great TV kisses do.

Superstore ended in 2021 after six seasons. Fans were sad to see the series go and certainly believed that the employees of Cloud 9 had more stories to tell. At least one cast member agrees. Jon Barinholtz, the actor who portrayed Marcus White in the series, would be onboard for a Superstore reunion. The beloved NBC show still has fans.
Why was ‘Superstore’ canceled?
In 2020, NBC shocked Superstore fans when it announced that season 6 would be the series’ last. The cancelation came as a big surprise. Superstore had done fairly well for NBC, and fans were still attracted to the show week after week.
While NBC never gave a definitive reason for the cancelation, industry experts are pretty certain America Ferrera’s decision to leave the series greatly impacted when and where it ended. According to Newsweek, Ferrera’s departure signaled to NBC that it was time to wrap things up.

Where You Can Stream It: Peacock
The Pitch: The elevator pitch for NBC's sitcom "Superstore" is simple: at a Walmart-like big box store in Missouri, a group of employees work, squabble, dream, goof off, fall in love, and fight for their rights. But across its six seasons, the series made by Justin Spitzer never stopped getting funnier, or more romantic, or bolder in its portrayal of the class struggle in America. One of these new employees is Tylor (Ben Feldman), who aims to climb the ranks of the company to become a jokester.
