Such writers as Hg Wells, Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein defined the way we thought about technology and the future, but in many cases, it was the work of an army of cover artists who got us to pick up their books in the first place.

The Marvel superhero gang are back together – including Vin Diesel’s Baby Groot alongside Chris Pratt’s Quill – and while there’s plenty of comedy, it doesn’t really go anywhere
Marvel’s likeable superhero comedy Guardians of the Galaxy is back for amiable and goofy volume number two, and its beefy-yet-quirky space hero and team leader Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, duly has a second volume of that Awesome Mixtape on the Sony Walkman he has on him at all times.
It’s the same combination of cartoony action and intergalactic screwball with some ambient production design recalling the photorealist sci-fi imagery of Roger Dean or Chris Foss in a bygone age, creating a visual sense of earnestness to offset the archly retro pop culture gags. Again, it has its own supercharged Heart FM playlist of 70s and 80s music. The early 70s track Brandy (You’re a...

We’ve all been there. You eat and eat and eat, and your stomach gets so full, you feel as if you’re about to burst. Well, if you were Kane (played by John Hurt) in Ridley Scott’s “Alien,” then burst it did. Though, not exactly due to too much food. The “chestburster” scene from the 1979 film is one of cinema’s all time classics, and CineFix breaks down the mechanics and history behind it in this amazing new “Art of the Scene.” The nine-minute video starts with an introduction of the key players behind the “Alien” aesthetic, namely Scott, writers Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, and designers Ron Cobb, Chris Foss, and H.R. Giger. Cobb, a former engineer, was largely responsible for the look of the Nostromo, the crew’s ship in the film. The dining room he helped bring about gave a sense of normalcy to the deep-space setting,...

Frank Pavich's documentary takes a tour of a classic sci-fi film that never was. Jules-Pierre takes a look at Jodorowsky's Dune...

"There are more unmade movies than there are made movies," says Frank Pavich, director of Jodorowsky's Dune, the documentary chronicling director Alejandro Jodorowsky's efforts to adapt Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction novel for the big screen. His effort began almost a decade before the generally unsatisfying David Lynch version hit theatres in 1984.
Back in the mid 70s, widely credited as the creator of the Midnight Film genre with the release of El Topo (which caused a riot during its viewing at a film festival in Mexico), and fresh from the success of The Holy Mountain, Jodorowsky was given his choice of subject for his next movie. He elected to adapt Dune, even though he had never even read the book.

In the mid-Seventies, Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky, who was known for his radical arthouse films El Topo and Holy Mountain, took on the greatest challenge of his film career -- adapting for the screen one of the most classic sci-fi novels in history, Frank Herbert's Dune.
For two years, Jodorowsky worked an overwhelming number of hours with his creative team, including French comic-book artist Jean "Moebius" Giraud, screenwriter Dan O'Bannon (Dark Star, Alien), artist H.R. Giger (Alien), and sci-fi paperback illustrator Chris Foss to create over 3,000 storyboards and dozens of paintings along with incredibly detailed costumes and a tome of a script the size of a large phone book.
The film was to star Jodorowsky's own 12-year-old son, Brontis, who endured two years of daily martial arts training in preparation for his starring role alongside icons such as Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Salvador Dali. Although the film was never made,...

Jodorowsky’s Dune
Directed by Frank Pavich
USA, 2014
“I’ve seen Jodorowsky’s Dune,” director Nicholas Winding Refn announces early on in the new documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, “and it is awesome.” Of course, neither Refn nor anyone else has actually seen the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s famed science-fiction novel that Alejandro Jodorowsky planned to make, because funding fell apart and the film never got made. But Refn has seen Jodorowsky’s Dune book: the collection of script pages, storyboards, and concept drawings that the famed Spanish surrealist assembled to pitch his film to Hollywood studios. Thanks to director Frank Pavich, we can examine these materials just as Refn did, and learn that Refn is right.
Thanks to the cult success of his bizarre, deeply philosophical films El Topo and The Holy Mountain, Jodorowsky found a pair of French producers who wanted him to do anything that he liked.

Resurrecting Sci-fi Legend: Pavich Taps Alejandro
Frank Herbert’s epic novel Dune has been a sci-fi benchmark since it’s original release back in 1965, and since, there have been several attempts at a worthy film adaptation. No one guessed that psychedelic surrealist Alejandro Jodorowsky, who rose to fame for his midnight oddities El Topo and The Holy Mountain, would be the man to stake his claim for the task. After a friend suggested he check out the book, Jodorowsky (without initially reading it first) decided it to be the follow up to his 1973 sleeper hit. His goal was to use the interstellar opera to expand the consciousness of youth the world over, reproducing the mind-bending effects of LCD without taking the drug itself. Fancying himself a movie-making martyr with a metaphysical mission, Jodorowsky remarkably amassed a past and future A-list cast and crew of ‘spiritual warriors’ (as he called...
Jodorowsky’s Dune
Directed by Frank Pavich
USA, 2013
Alejandro Jodorowsky, Michel Seydoux, Frank Herbert, Chris Foss, H.R. Giger, Moebius, Magma, Pink Floyd, Dan O’Bannon, David Carradine, Mick Jagger, Amanda Lear, Orson Welles, and Salvador Dali. Yes, that’s quite an array of figures, isn’t it? Frank Pavich’s historically illuminating and expertly constructed documentary on one of the greatest films never made, Jodorowsky’s Dune, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival today. It’s no mean feat to win over a gaggle of cynical jaded hacks but that’s exactly what was achieved with this post-mortem on the omnipresent lack of originality among Hollywood executives, a impenetrable wall of financiers who crushed the dreams of one the industry’s most idiosyncratically original postwar shamans. After a whistle-stop tour of Jodorowsky’s phantasmagorical curriculum vitae—he’s a Mexican surrealist provocateur par excellence, the twisted psycho-nautical genius behind...

In 1974, the Chilean-born filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky was coming off the dual successes of his films El Topo and The Holy Mountain. The former, a violent Spaghetti Western, pioneered the concept of the midnight movie in the U.S.; the latter was a surreal tale full of tarot-card imagery that was a huge box office hit in Europe. (Deacdes later, Kanye West would claim The Holy Mountain was the inspiration for the look of his Yeezus tour.) Sensing that Jodorowsky was not just an artist but a visionary, French producer and...

So, just how much fun is "Jodorowsky's Dune"? When I saw it last year at Cannes, it screened without English subtitles during certain portions of the multilingual film, but I was still able to put together 5 Things You'll Learn from the movie. And when our own Jessica Kiang caught up with it at the recent Goteborg Film Festival, she was just as taken as I was, declaring Frank Pavitch's documentary an "unalloyed pleasure... about the value and power of creative passion." With the movie now on the way to cinemas, here's a little taste, with a clip from the movie featuring a variety of the talking heads—including Alejandro Jodorowsky's friend Nicolas Winding Refn—speaking about the sheer ambition of Jodorowsky's mooted "Dune." Lovingly called "the greatest science fiction movie never made," it truly would've been a wonder if it actually came together, with Jodorowsky, remarkably, lining up the talents of H.

As Moore’s Law has continued to raise the quality and lower the cost of Av equipment, and more fledgling filmmakers have dipped their feet in the fountain of non-fiction, there’s been much talk about us being in the midst of a new golden age of documentary filmmaking. Now, lofty statements like these generally wind up being little more than buzzword attractions meant to set the blogosphere aflame, but this year has undoubtedly been a stellar year for the non-fiction form. From politically shattering investigations to form flexing art films to immensely personal portraits, not only are documentaries making a major impact on the ol’ festival circuit – Sundance, Tribeca, Hot Docs, SXSW, AFI Docs – many fest favorites from last year have had considerable success this year in art house theatres, not just in NYC & La, but in some cases nationwide – not an easy feat.

Ridley Scott has described the film as ‘sharing the DNA of the Alien franchise’, did this encourage you to ape Jerry Goldsmith’s score, or did you try to do something different?
I watched the first movie a few times before I started on the project, it’s such a landmark film, it’s such a classic. Same goes for the score for the original film, it’s an amazing, brilliant score. Taht’s definitely something to take into consideration, but then this is a new film,...

French comic book artist internationally known by his pen names Moebius and Gir
The artist Jean Giraud was principally known for his work on comic books under two pen names. As Gir, the co-creator of Blueberry, one of France's most popular strips, his brushwork was detailed and realistic; as Moebius, he used intricate, visually arresting penwork to explore the subconscious in his creations Arzach, Le Garage Hermétique (The Airtight Garage) and L'Incal (The Incal). But Giraud, who has died of cancer aged 73, had an impact on the visual arts that went beyond comics. He was seen as a figurehead linking bandes dessinées with modernism and nouveau réalisme. As the co-creator of Métal Hurlant magazine, he took comics to an older, more literate audience. In cinema, his fans ranged from Federico Fellini to Hayao Miyazaki and his style influenced dozens of others, including Ridley Scott, George Lucas, James Cameron and Luc Besson.

The younger geek won't remember the skulking atmosphere in which Sf was trying to breathe through most of the 1970s, and neither will they remember the extraordinary, often adult-oriented world of Heavy Metal, the English-language edition of the famed Sf dystopian comic-fest Metal Hurlant. Nor yet how many of those strange fantasies and amazing designs were created by the man known as 'Moebius' - Jean Giraud, who died of cancer today at the age of 73.
The man was a breath of fresh air in that struggling decade for science-fiction and futurism.
Director Ridley Scott, already an admirer of the French comic artist (who had by the mid-1970s amassed much-admired coffee-table books of illustrations, apart from his esteemed contributions to Heavy Metal and the comics world) was easily persuaded by Alien creator Dan O'Bannon to bring Moebius on-board as another artistic refugee, from Jodorowsky's Dune, to Alien. Jodorowsky’s Dune Clip. Frank Pavich‘s Jodorowsky’s Dune (2012) movie clip stars Alejandro Jodorowsky. Jodorowsky’s Dune‘s plot synopsis: “The documentary covers cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky and his 1974 attempt to create a big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel, Dune. While the ambitious production collapsed after two years, Jodorowsky’s team of then relatively unknown concept artists continued exploring the themes and styles started on the project and ended up changing modern science fiction forever: H.R. Giger went on to Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien, Dan O’Bannon wrote Alien and Total Recall, Jean “Moebius” Giraud created artwork and futuristic worlds for The Empire Strikes Back, Tron, and The Fifth Element and Chris Foss would go on to work on Alien and Superman.”
This is pretty intriguing. I had no idea another Dune film had come so far along into production and was then canned.

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune movie never made it to the screen, but the production’s legend lives on, as a new documentary charts its making...
Director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s doomed attempts to bring Frank Herbert’s novel Dune to the screen are the stuff of movie legend. In seeking to adapt Herbert’s sprawling sci-fi fantasy, Jodorowsky’s proposed adaptation seems, with the benefit of hindsight, unbelievably quixotic.
In 1974, the director decided that he would follow his surrealist western The Holy Mountain with a big-screen retelling of Herbert’s story of rival families and warring empires in a distant galaxy – a decision he made without even having read the book. He was attracted by its themes of messiahs and emotional dislocation, he later said, and readily agreed to producer Michel Seydoux’s proposal to adapt it (“I needed to support my family,” Jodorowsky explained in a later interview).

I remember being scared to death of Ridley Scott's Alien when I was a kid. To be honest, it still scares me a bit to this day. You would think that most of the facts surrounding it's filming would be common knowledge to fans. Oddly enough, I did not know the following list of ten things that io9 put together. From The Who's involvement in the film to Sigourney Weaver's audition outfit, there are some awesome facts below.
Here is the list featured in a new book titled Alien Vault: The Definitive Story of the Making of the Film:
That famous "chestburster" scene was just as horrifying for the actors. None of them quite knew what was coming, as you might have heard. The book is full of great details about how far Ridley Scott went to keep them in the dark. "If the actor is justacting terrified,...

Chris Foss has had the sort of career many young men would dream of. He has worked as a visual consultant on some of the most influential movies of our time, including 'Alien,' 'Superman' and Alejandro Jodorowsky's famously scrapped version of 'Dune.'
He even had the chance to tell off a director he once admired greatly: Stanley Kubrick. The two butted heads constantly when Foss was brought in to work on Kubrick's 'AI,' resulting in a blowout that ultimately led to Foss being frozen out of the project altogether.

If you’ve ever wandered through the Sci-Fi aisle at your local bookstore, you’re probably familiar with the work of Chris Foss, even if you don’t know it. His artwork has been featured on so many classic and modern Sci-Fi novel covers that his aesthetic is nigh impossible to separate from the genre’s imagery. Isaac Asimoc, Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, Rick Raphael, Michael Moorcock, John W. Campbell, Jack Vance, Edmund Cooper, and other Sci-Fi authors all have books bearing Foss’s artwork. Unless Foss is ambidextrous, it’s fair to say he singlehandedly altered the public notion of how Sci-Fi looked on the page. For fans of his work or Sci-Fi art in general, Titan Books has recently released Hardware: The Definitive Sf Works of Chris Foss. Oh, complete (and tangentially convenient) afterthought, Foss was also the visual design consultant on a little movie called Alien.

Titan Books’ Hardware: The Definitive Sf Works of Chris Foss is a brand new oversized hardback takes a look at the classic sci-fi artwork of Chris Foss and is the first retrospective of the career of the man who helped to define Sf imagery in the 70s and onwards.
Inspired by his childhood memory of post war wreckage in his native Guernsey, Foss’s distinctive and almost photo-realistic art (if giant alien spacecraft could ever be real) revolutionized paperback covers from the 70s onwards, as he dramatically raised the bar for realism and invention, with his trademark battle-weary spacecraft, dramatic alien landscapes and crumbling architecture. His artwork was so well-received and well-appreciated that his influence spread into science fiction cinema, where Foss worked to design the look of films by some of the greatest sci-fi storytellers in Hollywood.

One of the biggest announcements this week at Cannes was the news of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune, a documentary on the Chilean filmmaker’s attempt to adapt Frank Herbert‘s novel in the mid-’70s. Twitch recently premiered an exclusive video clip from the upcoming production detailing just how insanely ambitious the project was. Fans of the legendary filmmaker would all agree that if he had completed the project, it would strongly stand a chance of being one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. I guess we’ll never know. Watch the promo vide below.
Also here is the official press release:
It was announced today that L.A. based Snowfort Pictures, Camera One of France and Koch Media of Germany have begun production on Frank Pavich’s sci-fi documentary Jodorowsky’S Dune. Shooting has wrapped in France, Switzerland and the U.K. with filming to continue this summer in the United States.

No other time, no other place sees a greater concentration of the world's film journalists than the Cannes Film Festival. If you've got an announcement to make, Cannes is the when and where to make it. Before what looks like a pretty raucous week gets rolling tomorrow, I thought I'd gather notes on a few of the most interesting made so far.
The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Roxborough goes to work on the story that's probably made the biggest noise so far: "The creator of Antichrist and the helmer of Taxi Driver will collaborate on their next project. Danish director Lars von Trier and Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese are teaming up for a remake of The Five Obstructions, von Trier's 2003 documentary deconstructing the filmmaking process…. It's unclear which of Scorcese's films will form the basis of the Five Obstructions remake."
Jason Guerrasio for Filmmaker: "This news got me thinking about another project...

Holy Mountain of shit! News has emerged from the Cannes film festival that documentary filmmaker Frank Pavich is halfway through making a film called Jodorowsky.s Dune which chronicles Alejandro Jodorowsky's failed efforts to adapt Frank Herbert.s novel Dune in the mid 1970s.

Pinewood Studios (UK) reports that production has started on "Prometheus", 'an original science fiction epic' directed by Ridley Scott ("Alien"). The Twentieth Century Fox, Scott Free Productions and Brandywine Productions film, stars Noomi Rapace ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"), Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: First Class") and Oscar-winner Charlize Theron ("Monster").
The production is using several stages at Pinewood including the world famous '007 Stage'. This is the fifth time that Scott has shot at the studios, with previous films including "Alien", "Legend", "White Squall" and "Robin Hood".
"It’s my heritage, my personal heritage," said Scott about working at Pinewood and Shepperton. "I film everywhere in the world and I think all things considered what we have to offer here, is as good as anything you’re going to get in Hollywood."

According to reports actress Charlize Theron ("Aeon Flux") has joined Noomi Rapace ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") and Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: First Class") in director Ridley Scott's upcoming 20th Century Fox alien feature "Prometheus".
The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts ("The Darkest Hour") from an idea by Scott. Damon Lindelof ("Star Trek") and Scott are currently developing the screenplay.
"While 'Alien' was indeed the jumping off point for this project," said Scott, "out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place.
"The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.

As the Alien Anthology appears on Blu-ray, we look back at Ridley Scott’s 1979 original, and how its production design helped to create a classic of sci-fi…
I've lost count of the number of times I've watched Alien. Every shot of Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror has etched itself on my brain, and the corridors of its ship, the Nostromo, are now hopelessly familiar.
The point where Alien still provoked a frisson of fear has long since passed, but I still feel compelled to watch it again every few months or so. And when I do, the same thought often runs through my mind: what would it have been like to watch Alien on the big screen in 1979?
I try to imagine seeing Kane rise from his hypersleep for the first time, and what it would be like to see the horseshoe-shaped alien ship with fresh eyes. Would I have...

This unassuming, multitalented film-maker, who has died aged 63, was best known as the brain behind Alien. But he was so much more
Yesterday, following a short battle with an undisclosed illness, Dan O'Bannon sadly passed away aged 63. While his name should be vaguely familiar to cinemagoers as the writer and creator of Alien, to fans of genre films it should be tattooed somewhere on their person. O'Bannon was part of the fabric of genre films, a fixture. Though his star never rose above a certain elevation, in his own unassuming fashion he was a game-changer in more ways than Avatar will ever manage.
I've always had as much an interest in the nuts-and-bolts technical and artistic side of the movie-making process as in the finished films themselves. In the 1980s I wasn't alone: there were plenty of magazines, such as Cinefantastique, Fantastic Films and Starburst that were full of interviews with behind-the-camera workers.

Dangerous Minds is one of my favorite new sites. It's the brainchild of Richard Metzger, the brilliant Brit once behind Disinfo.com pictured at left, and Tara McGinley, a costume designer/stylist (and Metzger's wife). Although the site covers everything from sex to pop culture and "kooks," my favorite is naturally the movie section.
Metzger and friends dig up and dissect the obscure, the weird, and the fantastic. Just a sampling of the website turns up info on an art show featuring "production drawings" and "commissioned work" from Alejandro Jodorowsky's aborted Dune adaptation featuring artists like H.R. Giger, Moebius, and Chris Foss, as well as a deep-cut discussion of the Mexican midnight movie staple Coffin Joe, which Metzger describes as "a rant-prone Nietzschean Übermensch with a top hat, cape and excessively long fingernails." Seriously, can you pass that up?
Sure, some of these movies are things you might never want to see,...
