Last month surely wasn’t the best time for CBS, with the network receiving backlash after canceling several successful shows at once. The list of unfortunate series that were unfairly scrapped included one of the NCIS franchise’s spinoffs NCIS: Hawai’i, and fans were left bewildered by such a harsh decision as literally nobody, including the cast, had seen it coming.
The show lovers’ own investigations proved that the spinoff wasn’t that unprofitable for CBS as its ratings were pretty much decent, but now it seems like the network’s other show and its raving success may be the most solid reason for the cancellation.
At least TV Insider writer Matt Roush’s article suggests so. According to him, the hit status of Young Sheldon, a prequel for CBS’ famous sitcom The Big Bang Theory which recounts Sheldon Cooper’s earlier years in Texas, may have been the final...

When Babe Paley meets Truman Capote for the first time in 1955 in the FX anthology series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” it is the story of Ann Woodward that the famous writer tells in order to captivate her and her luminous friends. As Tom Hollander relishes one of Capote’s many rich monologues, we see Demi Moore as Woodward playing out two versions of the gruesome tale of the death of her husband – one in which she mistakenly shoots him, thinking he’s a burglar, the other in which she commits an act of intention homicide.
When, by the end of the premiere episode, Capote publishes his infamous excerpt from the unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” in “Esquire” in 1975, it is Woodward who takes her own life. While not one of the most prominent characters in the show, Woodward and her demise demonstrate the stakes of the feud at the heart of the series’ title.

Tom Arnold was a showbiz joke in the early 1990s.
The unknown actor suddenly became a gossip mag regular in 1990 as Roseanne Barr's publicity-hungry husband. When she brought Arnold in as a writer on her hugely popular sitcom, there was a sense of coattail-riding. When she cast him on the show, and, two years later, convinced ABC to give him his own sitcom, this sense curdled for some into fact. And when several prominent TV critics shredded the series, Barr created a PR crisis by firing off nasty faxes to the naysayers (including a homophobia-tinged screed to USA Today's Matt Roush that brought her bigotry to the fore decades prior to her Trump-era meltdown). It was all terribly ugly. Barr had more than enough Nielsen ratings juice to weather this storm, but Arnold's fame seemed to be nearing its fifteenth minute.

Steve Carrell portrayed iconic character Michael Scott for five seasons in The Office. But before he was cast as the character, he turned to Ricky Gervais’ Office performance for help. Only to realize that might’ve been a bad idea.
Why Steve Carrell refused to watch the rest of Ricky Gervais’ ‘Office’ performance as David Brent Ricky Gervais, Stuart Brothman, Bill Hilary, and Matt Roush | Bryan Bedder/Getty Images
Office initially started off as Gervais’ brainchild. The UK mockumentary series was originally created by the frequent Golden Globe host and his partner Stephen Merchant in 2001. Although it was short-lived, only lasting for a couple of seasons, it left an incredible impact on the television industry. So much so that the series lived on through the American version of The Office, which was considerably more successful than its predecessor.
Gervais played David Brent, who was the manager to the fictional Wernham Hogg paper company.

Once you catch up with Truham Grammar School lovebirds Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), the real Heartstopper might be that you’ll have to wait (at least) months for the third season of the Netflix series. Heartstopper’s second season dropped on Thursday, August 3, and Season 3 isn’t on the schedule yet. But that third go-round is coming: Netflix ordered both seasons in one fell swoop last year. We’re happy to say, though — gay to say, even — that there are plenty more LGBTQ+ television series to binge-watch, many of which center on young people coloring outside the heteronormative, cisnormative lines. Yes, Chef! It seems that everyone loves The Bear Season 2 as much as we do. (There’s a reason TV Insider’s Matt Roush gave it a five star review and it’s certified fresh 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes!) All 10 episodes dropped on June 22, and the Season 2 debut was the most-watched premiere of any FX series on Hulu. Additionally, it posted significant year-over-year gains in viewership, with a +70 percent increase in total hours streamed over the first season after the first four days of viewing. Season 1 was the most-watched single season of a comedy series in FX history. Season 2 follows Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri), and Richard “Richie” Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they work to turn their grimy sandwich joint into a next-level spot. As they strip the restaurant down to its bones, the crew undertakes transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront...

And, in that role, Manville is quietly one of the very best things about this season. While Kirby and Bonham-Carter could be more playful in their depictions of Margaret, Manville has to be more restrained. Her Manville has settled into her role in the Royal Family and...

Can Apple TV+ replicate the success of “Ted Lasso” with its new comedy “Shrinking,” about a therapist who gets blunt with his patients while reeling from his own personal loss? It premiered on the streaming service on January 27, and it was co-created by “Lasso” boss Bill Lawrence and “Lasso” writer/actor Brett Goldstein along with Jason Segel, so it certainly has the right pedigree. Netflix and Uncoupled are, yes, uncoupled. The streaming service has canceled the Neil Patrick Harris rom-com after one season. Sarah Shatz/Netflix Reviews for Uncoupled were decent, with TV Insider’s Matt Roush calling it “an arch season-long pity party sprinkled with sexy slapstick, sitcom bon mots, and strong female support from Tisha Campbell as Michael’s brassy co-worker and Marcia Gay Harden as a demanding and equally bereft divorced client.” “Diverting when it’s not...

When the 74th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced back in July, legendary comedy duo Steve Martin and Martin Short joined an incredibly short list of costars nominated in the Comedy Actor category for their performances on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Throughout all Emmy history, only four other sets of comedy acting pairs have landed nominations in this category in the same year. But now that they have accomplished this feat, could the internal competition keep either of them from netting the trophy?
The first duo of comedy actors to earn nominations in this category dates back to 1968, when Sebastian Cabot and Brian Keith were recognized for “Family Affair” but lost to Don Adams (“Get Smart”). “Ted Lasso” ruled the 2021 Emmys with 20 nominations and seven wins including Best Comedy Series. It got another 20 nominations in 2022, which is especially impressive since it was up against several shows that weren’t eligible last year like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Barry,” and “Atlanta,” to name a few. Does that mean the Apple TV+ sports comedy is just as likely to win the top prize again?

Of the 25 Emmy categories currently available to predict in Gold Derby’s predictions center, only one contender has the unanimous support of all 17 of our Experts: Jean Smart (“Hacks”) for Best Comedy Actress. That, folks, is what we call a landslide.
If Smart wins again for her role as legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance on the HBO Max comedy series, she would become the first person since Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) to claim consecutive victories in the category. Jld would go on to win six acting trophies in a row between 2012 and 2017, in addition to her three producing triumphs for “Veep” and her acting wins for “Seinfeld” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” Smart currently has four career Emmys on her mantel for “Hacks,” “Samantha Who?” and “Frasier” (twice).

For this year’s Best Comedy Series battle, Gold Derby predicts reigning champ “Ted Lasso” will win again after walking away with last year’s statue. But the current Emmy race between “Ted Lasso” and “Hacks,” our predicted runner-up, is closer than you think. For starters, only eight comedies in Emmy history claimed the top prize for Season 1 and Season 2 (with the last being “Modern Family” 11 years ago), so history suggests we might see another show step up to the podium at the 2022 Emmys. Might an upset be in store?
At last year’s kudos, the Apple TV Plus feel-good sports laffer won seven total Emmys for series, actor (Jason Sudeikis), supporting actress (Hannah Waddingham), supporting actor (Brett Goldstein), casting, picture editing and sound mixing. Not to be outdone, the HBO Max show about a legendary stand-up comedian claimed three Emmys for actress (Jean Smart), directing (Lucia Aniello) and writing.

Steve Martin finally has his first chance at an Emmy nomination in the Best Comedy Actor category for his performance as Charles-Haden Savage on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” a series he created with John Hoffman. Playing a once-successful actor who now leads a lonely life in a lavish apartment building, Martin brings his gifts for comedy and drama to a dazzling, three-dimensional performance I think is his best since 1999’s “Bowfinger” more than 20 years ago.
The actor’s comedic line deliveries and moments of slapstick humor are inspired, and the more complex dramatic shades he brings to this well-written character make the performance shine. As Joel Keller (Decider) praises, “It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Martin, but we appreciate his later-in-life desire to find the funny in emotional moments and less broad, physical shtick.” Emmys voters, take notice.

And we’re back with The Morning Show. After a nearly two-year hiatus, the Emmy-winning series set behind the scenes at a scandal-plagued national morning show returns with enough drama to fill hundreds of those news tickers that scroll across your TV. The action picks up right after cohosts Alex Levy and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) exposed — on-air — their network’s hostile culture, including the bombshell that higher-ups at the network knew that sleazy ex-anchor Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) had a history of sexually inappropriate behavior. (Credit: Apple TV+) The shocking revelation causes several of the players “to go through some sort of epiphany,” says exec producer and director Mimi Leder. The team will also grapple with the coronavirus, racism, and cancel culture in a story that begins in late 2019 and then time-jumps twice: forward eight months, then ...

In 1997, Gillian Anderson won her first career Emmy Award for playing FBI Agent Dana Scully on Fox’s sci-fi hit “The X-Files.” After nearly tripping on her way up to the stage (watch above), the actress praised Helen Mirren, who presented her with the statuette, and thanked her friends and family. Now, 24 years later, Anderson is on track to claim Emmy #2 thanks to her buzzed-about role as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown.”
As of this writing, all 24 of our Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict Anderson will prevail in Best Drama Supporting Actress. That translates to overwhelming 4/1 odds to win. Her fellow nominees, in order of our Experts’ rankings, are Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”), Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Aunjanue Ellis (“Lovecraft Country”), Emerald Fennell (“The Crown”) and Madeline Brewer (“The Handmaid’s Tale”).

Jason Sudeikis has already won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG Award for his lovable role on the Apple TV Plus series “Ted Lasso.” Will he score an Emmy goal next? All 24 of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts say yes. Their united support translates to leading 3/1 combined odds for Sudeikis in Best Comedy Actor, far ahead of the second-place contender, Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”). The other nominees are Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) in third place, Kenan Thompson (“Kenan”) in fourth place and William H. Macy (“Shameless”) in fifth place.

One of the hottest races at the 2021 Emmys is undoubtedly Best Comedy Actress. For much of the season, Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”) has dominated Gold Derby’s odds with a majority of our everyday Users predicting her to win for the HBO Max comedy. However, most of our Emmy Experts who hail from major media outlets have now switched to another HBO Max scene-stealer, Jean Smart (“Hacks”). Which group do You think is right? Hurry — there is still time to make your Emmy predictions before the nominations are announced on July 13.

For four decades, Kathleen Turner has been a star. After bursting onto the scene as the sultry temptress in Lawrence Kasdan‘s 1981 film “Body Heat,” Turner has captivated audiences with successes on both stage and screen, from thrilling us as adventurer Joan Wilder in two “Romancing the Stone” movies to making us laugh as the seductive Jessica Rabbit. She has been nominated for one Academy Award (“Peggy Sue Got Married”), two Tony Awards and five Golden Globe Awards, winning two.
Yet Turner has never even been nominated for an Emmy.
That all may change this year, since she has become a prime contender for her supporting work in the comedy series “The Kominsky Method.” As Roz Volander, a doctor treating patients in the jungles of Colombia and the ex-wife of Sandy Kominsky (Michael Douglas), Turner briefly appeared in one episode in Season Two but has now been brought on board...

If Gold Derby’s predictions are true that “Sylvie’s Love” will win the Emmy for Best TV Movie, it would be a first for Amazon Prime Video. Previously the streamer contended once in this category for “King Lear” (2019), losing to Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” The new telefilm stars Tessa Thompson as Sylvie, a 1950s record store worker who has dreams of becoming a television producer. She soon falls in love with Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) and they begin a years-long, on-again/off-again relationship.
Director/producer Eugene Ashe also wrote the film that originally had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. That’s where Amazon acquired distribution rights, eventually releasing in on December 23, just in time for the holidays. At the Critics Choice Awards, “Sylvie’s Love” was nominated for Best TV Movie and Thompson for Best Actress. It also won the Image Award for Ashe for Best Director.

Ethan Hawke is a four-time Oscar nominee for “Training Day”, “Before Sunset”, “Before Midnight” and “Boyhood”, but he’s never been recognized at the Emmy Awards. Until now?
Not only does Hawke play famed abolitionist John Brown on Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” but he’s also on the Emmy ballot for writing and producing the limited series. That means he could get a whopping three Emmy noms for this project alone. Hawke was recently nominated as a lead actor at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, losing to Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”) both times. The good news for Hawke? Ruffalo is not eligible at this year’s Emmys since he claimed last year’s prize.

Paul Bettany (‘WandaVision’) has a stronger chance than you think to win the Emmy, say these Experts
Usually when you think of Marvel TV shows, you don’t automatically think of awards. But “WandaVision” could be the one to change all of that. This Disney Plus limited series broke the water cooler earlier this year for its genre-bending story about fan-fave “Avengers” Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Both actors delivered performances at the top of their games, with Bettany even getting major Emmy buzz for his dual roles as “Soul Vision” (the decent and honorable leading man) and “White Vision” (the emotionless and intimidating antagonist).
Currently 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts have made their Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series Actor, and Bettany comes in third place to win thanks to the support of these two: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Kaitlin Thomas (Gold Derby). The other savvy prognosticators are split between Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and Joel Edgerton...

Currently all 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts predict “The Crown” will win Best Drama Actress at the 2021 Emmys. However, when you look a bit closer you’ll see that there’s some dissension in the ranks in terms of which leading lady will wear the proverbial crown. With Emmy nominations just days away, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts are furiously updating their predictions. Their latest odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actress are in and the news is somewhat mixed for Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”). Good news, “Better Call Saul” fans: this may be the year Rhea Seehorn finally earns some Emmy love.

Earlier this year “The Good Place” signed off the air to great fanfare, but how many Emmy voters watching? NBC’s cerebral comedy about life after death starred Ted Danson as a demon with a heart of gold and Kristen Bell as a human struggling to become a good person, with its last episode airing January 30. The uplifting show has been nominated for seven Emmys overall, including Best Comedy Series (2019), Best Comedy Actor for Danson and Best Comedy Guest Actress for Maya Rudolph, but has yet to win anything. Now one of Gold Derby’s 31 Emmy Experts thinks that will change for its final season.
Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly) predicts “The Good Place” will take home a pair of Emmys for Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actor. This savvy prognosticator also forecasts a career-first nomination for Bell, but says the ultimate winner of Best Comedy Actress will be Merritt Wever (“Run”). Don’t forget,...

All season long, Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) has been the odds-on front-runner to win Best Comedy Supporting Actor at the 2020 Emmys, and that still hasn’t changed now that nominations voting is over. In fact, a leading 19 of our 31 Emmy Experts predict a second consecutive victory for the “Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer, compared to 10 who think “Schitt’s Creek” creator/writer/actor Dan Levy will prevail. The other two prognosticators throw their support at Sterling K. Brown (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).
SEETony Shalhoub is in a ‘Marvelous’ position to squelch this 12-year Emmy drought
Shalhoub is already a four-time Emmy champ, having won three times in Best Comedy Actor for “Monk” and once in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (2019). However, Shalhoub is not unbeatable for this current role. The first time he was nominated for playing Abraham “Abe” Weissman in 2018, he lost to Henry Winkler (“Barry...

“Saturday Night Live” Season 45 may have been forced to shut down early due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that won’t stop Kate McKinnon from taking home her third career Emmy Award. Four of Gold Derby’s 31 Experts predict McKinnon will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress at the 2020 Emmys: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly), Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo). That’s good enough for second place on our odds chart, behind only Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), someone who’s also looking to add a third trophy in this category.

After two failed nominations in 2014 and 2015, McKinnon claimed Emmy gold the following two years thanks in part to “SNL’s” skewering of the 2016 presidential election between Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin) and Hillary Clinton (McKinnon). She portrayed an endless array of topical political figures those years, including Jeff Sessions,...
