Sascha Rothchild with the cast of ‘Glow’.
It took 10 years for Sascha Rothchild to become an overnight success.
After studying playwriting at Boston College, Rothchild moved to La at 21 with the clear goal of writing half hour TV comedy. After writing a few spec scripts, she quickly managed to get an agent and thought, at least temporarily, that she’d made it. However, she’d go out to meetings but never get staffed in rooms. Frustrated, she turned her focus instead to features. Those scripts got more attention, yet nothing sold.
The whole time Rothchild was waitressing and doing odd jobs to make ends meet.
She kept trying and trying to crack it as a writer, but in the meantime seven or eight years had gone by.
Around that time, she kept getting parking tickets and was wondering if she could even afford to live in La. It seemed like...

Chicago – The so-called “legend of Oz” will cease to be legendary if they keep producing lame re-engineerings of the 1939 classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Close on the heels of last year’s dud, “Oz the Great and Powerful,” comes the dully rendered “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The screenplay – by Adam Balsam and Randi Barnes – is strictly boilerplate, with no consideration for creating something different for the Dorothy and Oz story, just an odd updating of the Kansas atmosphere and a rather depressing disaster area in the town after the first tornado. The voice casting of TV actress Lea Michele (“Glee”) as Dorothy is a sure sign of a way to lower the budget, and although some of the elements are interesting (the voice of Patrick Stewart as a talking piece of wood), overall the film will work as a glazed-eye babysitter for the kids, while adults...

Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return
Written by Adam Balsam and Randi Barnes
Directed by Will Finn and Daniel St. Pierre
USA, 2014
Roughly a minute after the opening credits of Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return end, the Lion (no longer Cowardly) not-so-playfully threatens to give the Tin Man an “oil change.” Although this is but the first of many groaners to come, it at least establishes an accurate, if unentertaining, tone to the picture. There might be a nugget of an interesting story in this adaptation if the computer animation wasn’t so cheap-looking and flat, or if the character development in the script felt earned or logical, but Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return is a mostly poor excuse for a start to the summer movie season in terms of family-friendly fare.

Could a movie social media status updates be a hit? Paramount Pictures is hoping so according to Deadline. The studio has bought Status Update, a pitch by Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes. The project is described as "a high school comedy that utilizes social media, particularly Facebook.
Rothchild most recently sold her pitch Who Invited Her? to Dreamworks with Reese Witherspoon attached, and she adapted her book How To Be Divorced By 30 for Universal. Barnes co-wrote the animated film Dorothy Of Oz.
I was not sure how Easy-a would do, but it turned out to be funny. If Status Update gets someone like Emma Stone to lead it could be a hit at the box office. What do you think?

Some screenwriting news has hit from Variety, who report that Disney’s hired Joe Gazzam to write what, right now, is only described as “an untitled family adventure set in Hawaii.” Though not a known name, Gazzam has reportedly done some rewrite work on 21 Jump Street and Step Up 4, while another script, It Takes a Thief, is moving forward with Universal. Needless to say, a successful stint here could do some pretty good things for his career. Monsterfoot Productions and Scott Sanders Productions will throw their support behind the film.
Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Paramount’s picked up rights to Status Update, which was presented as a pitch from Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes, who will possibly write the feature film that Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are producing through Fake Empire. As you can more or less gather from their title, the film will be “a high school comedy that utilizes social media,...

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures is acquiring Status Update, a pitch by Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire will produce. Ashley Brucks will oversee for the studio. Pitch is a high school comedy that utilizes social media, particularly Facebook. That’s where they got the title. It’s the second sale together for the producers with the writing team, with the first coming through Fake Empire’s TV division. Last year Rothchild and Barnes sold their TV pilot My Best Friend Is A Lesbo to NBC and Warners Brothers with Fake Empire producing. Rothchild most recently sold her pitch Who Invited Her? to Dreamworks with Reese Witherspoon attached, and she adapted her book How To Be Divorced By 30 for Universal. Barnes co-wrote the animated film Dorothy Of Oz. The scribes are managed by Apostle’s George Heller. Rothchild’s at Wme and Barnes at Paradigm.

So, this is a serious question: does anyone ever actually use the term "lesbo"? Like, that's not a word people use, right? The title — which, like Good Christian Bitches and The Bitch In Apartment 23, is obviously going to be changed¹ — would sound much better if they went with "lez," a thing I've actually heard before and doesn't remind me of the vernacular of middle-school boys. Oh, right, about the show: The project, from Warner Bros TV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s studio-based Fake Empire, is about two best female friends — one straight, the other gay — who become roommates and help each other navigate life, love, and dating in Los Angeles. The semi-autobiographical comedy is based on the real-life friendship of writers and longtime roommates Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes, who will co-pen the script together. I want to like this, [...]...

The unlikely, but infinitely appealing combination of Darren Criss, Susan Sarandon, and Laura Linney are the new faces of clothing giant Uniqlo. Previously, all I knew about Uniqlo was that Russell Tovey slept in their boxer shorts. Not I know they design clothes with boobs in mind.
Just when I thought that Locke & Key was dead, there's news that MTV may have an interest in the show if they can afford production. From what I know of the series, it could make an interesting companion for Teen Wolf. Put some of that Jersey Shore money to work!
Job application, or Grindr ad?
Reese Witherspoon is recovering at home after being struck by a car while jogging. I knew exercise was going to kill someone eventually.
A huge Nasa satellite is going to make an uncontrolled reentry into the atmosphere, and it's likely that at least a dozen pieces will impact the surface at unknown locations.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

"Glee" star Lea Michele is putting on Judy Garland's ruby slippers -- or at least an animated representation of her is.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.
