Ryan White’s documentary “Good Night Oppy” tells the inspirational true story of Opportunity, a rover sent to Mars for a 90-day mission in 2003 that ended up surviving for 15 years. Per an official synopsis, the film follows Opportunity’s groundbreaking journey on Mars and the remarkable bond forged between a robot and her humans millions of miles away. Watch the trailer below.
Angela Bassett narrates the documentary about the rover that outlasted its estimated survival date by more than 60 times. The rover was initially launched into space in 2003 to look for ancient water on Mars; it “died” in 2019 on the Red Planet after discovering that Mars stayed wet for an “extended period and that conditions could have been suitable for sustaining microbial life,” per NASA’s website. Its twin rover Spirit was active on Mars until 2010.

The day before the pandemic shut down Los Angeles in March 2020, veteran documentary filmmaker Ryan White signed on to make “Good Night Oppy.” With the support of NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Jpl) and Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm), the documentary recounts the true story of Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity and the bond forged between the robots and the humans who created them. Opportunity, nicknamed “Oppy,” was originally expected to live for only 90 days but ended up exploring the Red Planet for nearly 15 years, sending invaluable data and images back to NASA.
Produced by Jessica Hargrave, Amblin Entertainment’s Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey, Film 45’s Brandon Carroll and Matthew Goldberg, “Good Night Oppy” was acquired by Amazon Studios in November 2021. NASA missions and movie productions have more in common than you might think, according to Steve Squyres, a scientist who was the principal investigator of the Mars Exploration Rover Mission.
“There are way, way more good ideas for movies than there are movies that actually get made,” Squyres tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And there are way, way more good ideas for space missions than there are missions that actually get selected to fly. With space missions there’s even more money on the line. The time that it takes to make the thing is comparable or maybe longer. And if you fail, you fail big.”
Squyres has a unique perspective on the similarities between the space exploration and entertainment businesses, because both his brother and daughter work as film editors. But that perspective is deepening lately thanks to a new role the scientist...

No documentary has ever won the Oscar for Best Picture. In fact no documentary has ever been nominated. If ever there was an opportunity to change that statistic, at least in terms of a nomination it could be the remarkable, emotional, and uplifting Good Night Oppy which transcends the genre to become a richly rewarding cinematic experience, kind of a cross between Wall-e and The Martian. this all actually happened, but it is quite unusual in that it is truly feel-good, and it has all been brought to new life in an irresitible new film that in a time of divisiveness and negativity will remind you of the very best of us.

There is little that can be said about Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic "Jaws" that hasn't been said already. It essentially invented the summer blockbuster as we know it, ranks as one of the greatest movies ever made, and has undoubtedly stood the test of time. But after all these years, Universal Pictures has found a new way to bring the film to life by converting it to 3D and re-releasing it in premium format theaters.
Indeed, the film has resurfaced in theaters all across the country, and with the box office really slowing down, this may be just what the doctor ordered. And let's be clear, this isn't lousy, gimmicky 3D like when "Jaws 3-D" came out back in 1983: this is the real deal. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, stereographer Jeremy Carroll explained what went into crafting this new version of the film. Carroll led the conversion to 3D,...

Steven Spielberg‘s horror classics Jaws, the movie that forever changed the face of the Hollywood summer blockbuster, is back in theaters nationwide for Labor Day Weekend.
Jaws is taking another bite out of the big screen beginning today, September 2, 2022, and for the first time ever the 1975 shark attack classic comes to IMAX as well as RealD 3D!
“We’re enhancing the 3D by kind of bringing the water out into the audience, at the beginning of the film with, Chrissy, where she’s swimming,” stereographer Jeremy Carroll — who led the conversion to 3D, with direction by Spielberg — tells The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen. “That’s an intentional choice that we made to really kind of bring the audience into those shots to make you feel like you’re in the water with her to up that tension.”

Shortly after NASA landed its Curiosity and Perseverance rovers on Mars, a new documentary is in the works about another little robot that first captured hearts and minds: Opportunity, the Mars Exploration Rover.
The film about this “real-life Wall-e” is called “Good Night Oppy” and will be directed by “Assassins” filmmaker Ryan White. The heartwarming film shows how a robot that was only expected to be active for 90 days managed to explore Mars for nearly 15 years before making its final contact in June 2018. It’s about a robot traveling a planet on her own, but also about the literal connection and bond formed between human and machine.

Much larger in sponsorships, this year's Napa Valley Film Festival (November 11-15) has become so popular that the main road between Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga is jammed and the smaller theaters are playing to Sro crowds. The St.Helena Cameo Cinema is the longest running single screen theater in the United States, going back to 1913 and “featuring 400 seats, 150 opera chairs, a modern stage and two standing sets".
Culinary, wine and film mix well here. This year we were invited to dine with second-generation vintner Ron Nicholsen, at his estate, Kelham Vineyards, where chief Tyler Rodde from Oenotri, the southern Italian restauranteur from the town of Napa served us his finest food. And at every screening, the best of wines are tasted, In the morning we could (and I did once) practice yoga on the vineyard banks of the river running through the valley. Afternoon and evenings wine pours freely and people mix as they go to movies or to the parties and receptions. My big discovery was White Stone Wine grown on the shores of the mighty Lake Roosevelt in the shadows of Whitestone Rock. I award it for its white chalky stone accent on its bold red wines.
Jury and audience awards were given to the winners at the Uptown Theatre on Sunday, November 15, 2015. The Festival had screened 120 new independent films in 12 unique screening venues in the four postcard-perfect towns of Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga.

But wait, isn’t every way a horrible way to die? After all, you’re dying. That kinda sucks. Anyways, Adam Wingard’s new slasher movie “A Horrible Way to Die” is apparently one of those shaky cam horror movies, where the camera doesn’t seem to ever stay still even if someone onscreen is just pouring coffee or sipping tea. Which must be a hard thing to accomplish nowadays, what with all the steadicam and whatnot. But I digress. In “A Horrible Way to Die”, an escaped murderer pursues his ex-girlfriend to a new town, where she has fled to start a new life. Alas, that’s easier said than done. He is an escaped murderer, after all. Dude didn’t just already kill, he actually escaped prison, too. Clever fella. The film stars Aj Bowen , Joe Swanberg, Amy Seimetz, Brandon Carroll, Lane Hughes, and is directed by Adam Wingard.

Adam Wingard's A Horrible Way to Die is set to have its world premiere at next month's Toronto International Film Festival, and we're fortunate enough to offer you a very first look at the film's official "Cinematical" poster, and heck, why not a brand-new shot from the film as well? Above you'll see the rock-solid Aj Bowen (The Signal, The House of the Devil) brandishing a gun in all sorts of intimidating ways. (Yes, there will actually be a series of posters for this film. Eight in total!)
I'm trying to avoid too much information on the flick prior to its debut, but I can tell you it's about a woman (Amy Seimetz) who survived a horribly abusive relationship, only to have the past come knocking at her door -- brandishing a gun and a nifty mustache, apparently. Written by Simon Barrett (a Tiff veteran: Dead Birds), A Horrible Way to Die...

"Pop Skull is very unique, because it progresses from an intimate mumblecore movie into more of an intense psychological ghost story. Another selling point is that it was produced for less than it usually takes to shoot a low budget music video." - For a website that prides itself on championing indie films and filmmakers, we here at ioncinema.com really missed the boat with Pop Skull, an award-winning - jury awards at the Boston Underground amd Indianapolis International film festivals - ultra-low budget experimental thriller from director Adam Wingard (Home Sick). Since its release on DVD this past July, Pop Skull has been steadily - and deservedly - gaining a reputation as a visually powerful psychological horror film. This isn't your typical gore- and effects-laden ninety minutes that passes for horror these days (though Wingard is adept at that too...see Home Sick for proof). Pop Skull...

This unnerving slice of pill-popping, acid-tripping Midwestern life (now on DVD from Halo-8) feels like August Strindberg’s Dream Play filtered through the mind of retro-modern surrealists like The Manson Family’s Jim VanBebber and Julien Donkey-boy’s Harmony Korine. But filmmaker Adam Wingard leaps beyond even those cinematic transgressors in terms of stripping away narrative conventions, to the point where Pop Skull is less a narrative than a disaffected meditation by a depressed 20something pill addict, Daniel (played by perpetually spooked-out Lane Hughes, who also scripted with Wingard and E.L. Katz).
There’s no easy genre classification handy for this film. Even to describe it as “experimental” seems like a misnomer, since that implies certain art-house trappings—the movie feels more like flipping through the pages of a troubled young man’s diary, so “personal cinema” is an easy label. But what gives with all the images of ghosts,...

Halo-8 Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Adam Wingard's psychological horror film "Pop Skull." The film, which played last year's AFI Film Festival, will have a limited theatrical run followed by a DVD release July 28.
The film, starring Lane Hughes and Brandon Carroll, was written by Hughes, E.L. Katz and Wingard and produced by Wingard, Hughes, E.L. Katz and Peter Peter Katz.
It depicts the lonely and disjointed life of a young pill addict who is plagued by ghosts.
It played the Rome Film Festival, where Wild Bunch acquired foreign rights.
"Adam Wingard's brash and gutsy film isn't a breath of fresh air -- it's a breath of toxic, dextromethorphan-laced air that leaves audiences shocked to the core and proves horror can still be bold and inventive and smart," Halo-8 president Matt Pizzolo said.

And Halo-8 continues its quest to bring fans some truly unique genre programming. This time it's director Adam Wingard's slice of mind altering horror known as Pop Skull.
Pop Skull (review) depicts the lonely and disjointed life of Daniel, a young Alabama pill addict, as his efforts to cope with the trials of his day-to-day life collide with the increasing influence of murderous and displaced spirits that inhabit his home. Plagued by ghosts, Daniel discovers his home holds a secret to a grisly crime... a crime he's doomed to repeat if he can't prevail against the forces that haunt him.
"Two years in the making and dozens of cough medicine induced drunken hazes later, Pop Skull is finally emerging onto DVD with the support of indie distributor Halo-8," said director Adam Wingard. "It wasn't an easy road to get here, and perhaps in this time of economic collapse it...
