Mumbai, March 23 (Ians) Playback singer Armaan Malik, who recently performed at the concert in Mumbai with Ed Sheeran, has crooned the song ‘Khatti Si Wo Imli’ from the upcoming Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer film ‘Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life)’. For the same, he has collaborated with A. R. Rahman.
The singer shared that for him, every note felt like a privilege considering he was working with the Oscar and Grammy-winning composer.
Talking about his experience of working with Rahman, Armaan Malik said, “It’s truly an honour to lend my voice to A.R. Rahman Sir’s compositions. Every note, no matter how small, feels like a privilege.”
He further mentioned: “I feel incredibly fortunate to have sung for his latest track ‘Khatti Si Woh Imli’ featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran for ‘Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life)’. Chinmayi and Rakshita, the female singers, have done an exceptional job too and I’m glad I could complement their verses with my lines.

Is the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) a single-window clearance system for certifying feature films, which is mandatory before a film is released for public exhibition? Unfortunately, for the filmmakers, the Cbfc is indeed a single window clearance point and it is one very crowded place.
Take for example, the Marathi film, ‘Morrya’, awaiting release for the last many months. The maker’s sad story was mentioned in this column earlier when he addressed the media. It was a dramatic press conference because the filmmaker literally cried while sharing his experience with the media.
His story is that the Board is neither issuing a certificate, nor giving reasons for holding up the film because of which it has missed its release date of January 12.
A big lot of films are reportedly stuck with the censors, all awaiting a release. Do the people at the Board know how much it...

New Delhi, July 30 (Ians) Courts in India make a criminal swear by the Bhagavad Gita before he deposes in a case, or at least, that is what I have seen in films. The Gita, if one understands rightly, is the ultimate belief one can swear on to tell the truth. A criminal may still lie, but our judiciary and our films continue to repose faith in this holy book.
Since our film folk swear by the Gita, why won’t our Central Board Of Film Certification (Cbfc)? The Cbfc has passed the Hollywood film ‘Oppenheimer’ with a scene showing the lead pair indulging in sex while the male actor is shown reading from the ‘Bhagavad Gita’!
No, not Vatsyayana’s ‘Kama Sutra’, unless the Cbfc thought it is all the same!
I don’t know why the makers thought of doing this stunt, but, maybe, the Cbfc did figure it...

Yash Raj Films has released a trailer for much anticipated Bollywood film “Pathaan,” starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.
After a dismal 2022 where flops far outnumbered hits among Hindi-language films, and which ended with the box office failure of Ranveer Singh’s “Cirkus” on which Bollywood analysts were resting their revival hopes, “Pathaan” is the first flag bearer for the beleaguered industry for 2023.
“Pathaan” is also the comeback film for Khan, known as one of the great romantic stars of Bollywood. Some of his last few films have underperformed at the box office and his most recent release as a solo hero was “Zero” in 2018. He has since had cameos in “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.”
However, “Pathaan” has been in the eye of a storm after lawmakers belonging to India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party, the Bjp, took umbrage to the “Besharam...

Days after a Delhi-based advocate filed a complaint with Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur and the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) against Bollywood actors Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone for a music video for hurting religious sentiments, Cbfc Chairperson Prasoon Joshi has asked the makers of ‘Pathaan’ to make certain changes in the film and songs, and submit a revised version before its theatrical release.
Joshi said: “Cbfc is always committed to finding the right balance between creative expression and sensibility of the audience and believes that we can always find solution through meaningful dialogue between all stakeholders.”
“Whilst the process is getting duly followed and implemented I must reiterate that our culture and faith are glorious, intricate and nuanced. India’s Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) has “advised changes” to Yash Raj Films’ “Pathaan,” the comeback film of superstar Shah Rukh Khan that also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.
Controversy erupted in India on Dec. 12 when the song “Besharam Rang” – literally shameless color – was released. A segment of the song features Padukone in orange colored swimwear and Khan in a green shirt. Some saw the color orange as saffron – the color associated with India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party, the Bjp. Green is the color traditionally associated with Islam. India has had a long history of communal clashes between the two religions.
On Dec. 14, Narottam Mishra, the home minister of the Bjp-ruled central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, told the media that the costumes in the song were “objectionable” and that it had been shot with “a dirty mindset” and warned that the film could be banned in the state.

We have a few good, excellent centers in India, but deeper into the roots of India, people don’t have that much of exposure,” Joshi told Variety on the sidelines of the festival.

India is the country of honor at the Cannes Film Market and consequently a massive contingent from the country is descending upon the Croisette. Variety understands that some 400 attendees are winging their way from India, and that French embassies across the country were working at capacity to issue visas.
That stands in contrast with the attendance from other parts of Asia, further East. Attendance of participants from Hong Kong and China is massively down compared with pre-covid times. Korean companies are back in respectable numbers, with some attending a physical market outside their home country for the first time in over two years. The solid attendance of Korean executives also reflects the selection of Korean films across multiple sections of the festival.
“I’m very excited to be back in Cannes, it has been three years for us,” said Danny Lee, senior manager at Contents Panda, part of the Next Entertainment World studio.

India will be the official country of honor for the Cannes Film Market (May 17-25) this year.
This is the first time the market is having an official country of honor and the new tradition will be continued annually with different nations at future editions.
There s a neat coincidence: India is celebrating its 75th year of independence from British rule. The Cannes festival is also celebrating its 75th anniversary.
The market celebrations will kick off on May 18 at the Majestic Beach with an introduction from market executive directors Jérôme Paillard and Guillaume Esmiol and a welcome address from Anurag Singh Thakur, India’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting.
India will be prominently visible throughout the festival this year. Actor Deepika Padukone is on the jury for the main feature film competition. Indian filmmaker Shaunak Sen’s Sundance grand jury prize winning documentary “All That Breathes” is showing as a special screening.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President John Bailey on Tuesday weighed in on diversity, saying there are great filmmakers everywhere and they need to be acknowledged.
"The Academy and film institutes around the world are dealing with issues of...encouraging and supporting diversity while not compromising on the inherent artistic value of films," Bailey said here amidst many aspiring Indian filmmakers.
He agreed that the Academy is looking for increasing its membership in diversity, but not at the expense of quality.
"Last year, we brought in 928 new members into the Academy. Fifty percent were international members... we have been so Hollywood-centric for so long.
"There are literally thousands of incredible filmmakers around the world... men and women who have been making movies for 30, 40, 50 years who could have been, but have never been invited in the Academy or didn't know that they could be sponsored.
"There need be no compromises.

Manikarnika The Queen Of Jhansi
Starring Kangana Ranaut, plus stalwarts reduced to junior artistes
Directed by Kangana Ranaut & Krish
There is plenty that is openly wrong with this beleaguered aspiring epic. It’s rhythm of storytelling feels all wrong. One minute we are looking at Kangana Ranaut playing herself—wide-eyed tightlipped defiant stubborn and sinister—the next minute she forgets herself and immerses herself in her character. Much like the Queen-warrior herself who never could decide whether she wanted to be a wife, mother, warrior or rebel and ended up being an amalgamation of all these roles.
But country always came first. Oh yes, Rani Laxmibai was a desh bhakt and she made no bones about it. It is when Ranaut speaks about putting country above all else that her eyes light up. And so do the frames. I got goosebumps when Ranaut’s Rani ticks off the British General.

FilmsAssamese film "Village Rockstars", Malayalam film "Bhayanakam", Bengali movie "Nagarkirtan", and "Sinjar" will be showcased at the festival's India Pavilion.IANSPoster of 'Village Rockstar' By Radhika Bhirani National Award-winning films from Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Lakshadweep will represent India's regional cinema prowess at the 71st Cannes Film Festival where a delegation led by Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani will push for their distribution and exhibition in the global market. The prestigious film jamboree, where Nandita Das' "Manto" and Rohena Gera's "Sir" are in separate competition sections, will get under way in the French Riviera on Tuesday. Assamese film "Village Rockstars", Malayalam film "Bhayanakam", Bengali movie "Nagarkirtan", and "Sinjar", a film from Lakshadweep made in the Jasari language, will be showcased at the festival's India Pavilion, organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting along with Ficci. "With a strong Indian delegation at the festival, we are positive that the world will see the diversity of our cinema and the exceptional cinematic talent our country possesses," Leena Jaisani, Assistant Secretary General, Ficci, told Ians. Irani, who has been persistent in drawing attention to the need to celebrate the country's regional cinema, will inaugurate the India Pavilion on Wednesday. The other delegates will include Ashok Kumar Parmar, Joint Secretary (Films), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Vinod K. Jacob, Joint Secretary, (Ed), Ministry of External Affairs; Censor Board Chairperson Prasoon Joshi, Censor Board member Vani Tripathi Tikoo, filmmakers Shaji N. Karun, Jahnu Barua and Bharat Bala, as well as actress Parvathy. Tikoo feels the domestic boundaries within Indian cinema need to go. "It's either good or bad cinema. The thrust has to be on Indian cinema as good narratives are coming from every region," Tikoo told Ians, adding that it's high time that as one of the largest film producing nations in the world, "we start respecting our cinema". She rued how films from languages other than Hindi find relevance within India after gaining "olive branches", referring to the laurel wreaths that movies flaunt after touring international film festivals. "It should be the reverse," averred Tikoo, who said the idea behind taking such titles to Cannes -- "the largest film market" -- is to ease the struggle a bit for films which have fantastic narratives, but find it hard to get the right exhibition platform. Bala, known for patriotic videos like "Vande Mataram" and "Jana Gana Mana", pointed out that in the last several years, most Indian films which have got a positioning at foreign fests are regional titles. "With the presence at Cannes Film Festival, the idea is to get them into the market, find a larger distribution stream and to work on existing co-production treaties," Bala told Ians. He agreed that the distribution mechanism for regional cinema isn't great within India itself, but said things are changing due to streaming platforms like Amazon and Netflix, which have enabled their global reach. Actress Rasika Dugal, who will be in Cannes for "Manto", finds it a great initiative. "There's a lot of beautiful work happening in films in different parts of India which we don't hear about... We either get to see it at a film festival or through a friend... So, I think it's high time it gets a push," Rasika told Ians. The films apart, the delegation's focus will be on leveraging co-productions with the countries with which India has co-production treaties, along with the other potential countries, promote ease of film shooting in India and position the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) at festival circuits. The India Pavilion will also see the launch of "T for Tajmahal", poster of "Bhonsle" by actor Manoj Bajpayee and producer Devashish Makhija, and actor Dhanush-starrer Indo-French co-production "The Extraordinary Journey Of Fakir". At the main fest, two women filmmakers' projects from India have made it to competition sections. Das' Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer "Manto" is in the Un Certain Regard Section, while Gera's "Sir" is in the Cannes Critics' Week sidebar. On the red carpet too, there will be women power galore as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Huma Qureshi and Mallika Sherawat will be seen walking the red carpet for various brand endorsements, while actors like Rasika and Tillotama Shome will represent their movies.
