Actor Andrew Buchan makes his screenwriting debut with ITV thriller Passenger, and here’s the trailer.
Andrew Buchan is probably best known for playing grieving father Mark Latimer in Chris Chibnall’s whodunnit Broadchurch. He has also played the title role in drama The Fixer, as well as parts in films like Nowhere Boy, All The Money In The World and The Mercy.
He now makes his screenwriting debut with ITV thriller Passenger.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Riya (Loki star Wunmi Mosaku) arrived in the quiet town of Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for something, anything that will make her feel alive again. Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya,...

“Bohemian Rhapsody” star Lucy Boynton smoulders as 1950s nightclub owner Ruth Ellis in a new image from upcoming ITV drama “A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.”
Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in Britain in 1955 after she was convicted of shooting dead her lover, racing driver David Blakely.
Boynton is joined by Toby Jones (“Tetris”), Laurie Davidson (“Cats”) and Mark Stanley (“Trigger Point”) in the four-part series, which promises to expose the British obsession with class, sex and death.
“Set in 1955 in the glamorous and intoxicating world of London club-land, Ruth found huge acclaim, aged 28, as the capital’s youngest club manager,” reads the logline. “But her success soon unraveled as she became entwined in an abusive relationship with racing driver David Blakely. On trial for his murder, Ruth was condemned to hang by a system which judged her for far more than her crime.”

Wahey, it’s Christmas. Time to celebrate by ranking television designed to air when everyone is drunk or angry or asleep or all three. This is exactly what Jesus would have wanted.
The Doctor Who Festive Specials have been part of the BBC’s Christmas and New Year’s Day line-up since 2005 – times when there’s something of a captive audience who might not normally watch the show. Unlike the 1965 Christmas Day episode, the hope is that they’ll attract a broader audience. Some episodes are more forgiving for casual viewers than others. Some episodes will garner the ultimate praise from your father-in-law: complete silence for the duration followed by ‘That was rather good’. Some episodes make absolutely no sense to anyone who only watches at Christmas.
Including Chris Chibnall’s three New Year specials (but not ‘Spyfall’ because it’s a series opener rather than a one-off special episode) brings us to 17 stories,...

A dinner party devolves into a bloodbath in this stylish, slow-burn Welsh language horror from debut director Lee Haven Jones. Fair warning: The Feast is not the kind of movie about a feast that will make you hungry afterwards. Indeed, eating beforehand might not be a good idea either.
Set in the present day, the film centres on a wealthy family preparing for a dinner party at their stylish, ultra-modern home in the Welsh countryside. As the film begins, mother Glenda (Nia Roberts) is relaxing in her purpose-built meditation chamber, her corrupt politician husband Gwyn (Julian Lewis Jones) is out trying to shoot rabbits, while her sons Guto (Steffan Cennydd) and Gweirydd (Siôn Alun Davies) are getting high and obsessively training for a triathalon,...

Cannibalism, torture, gory sex and meaty subtexts are all on the menu at a dinner party held by an arrogant local MP
Set and shot in Wales, with dialogue in Welsh (apart from a few loan words from English and the occasional Anglo-Saxon cuss), this is a striking, reasonably original wodge of folk horror. It also represents an auspicious first feature for director Lee Haven Jones (he’s shot a few Doctor Who episodes and the like), working from a script by writer-producer Roger Williams. Said screenplay adroitly incorporates meaty subtexts about class and generational tension, the evils of contemporary land management, and sexual abuse, while still ensuring there’s plenty of screen time devoted to cannibalism, torture and very gory forms of sex.

Annes Elwy in The Feast
Welsh language films which enjoy international success are rare beasts, genre ones even more so, so it’s no surprise that the festival success of The Feast has got people talking. There’s a lot to admire in this finely crafted film, which we first caught when it screened at last year’s Beyondfest. It tells the story of a dinner party held in celebration of an environmentally dubious deal which is waited on by a young woman who is not what she appears. Themes around class, capitalism and the relationship between people and land collide with ancient tradition and otherworldly cruelty.
Playing that unusual young woman, Cadi, is Annes Elwy, and she and director Lee Haven Jones joined me for a chat ahead of the film finally making it into UK cinemas. Lee began by telling me how the film, which was scripted by Roger Williams,...

The most redemptive quality of the new money family doomed to ruin in Lee Haven Jones’ “The Feast” is that they speak Welsh. If you’ve never seen Welsh in writing, buckle up for an orthography comprising a dizzying array of digraphs; if you’ve never heard it spoken, challenge yourself by learning how to pronounce the longest word in the tongue without fainting. Less than 30% of Welsh people speak Welsh, which makes Welsh speakers uncommon company.

Boiling Point (Philip Barantini)
More often than not, one-take films struggle to justify their gimmick. Whether shot in one go or utilizing an intensive editing process to appear like so, the technique almost always threatens to overshadow whatever story is at the center rather than emphasizing it. Used correctly, it can prove immersive in the exact same way as a theatrical production—breaking down barriers between performer and audience, who can see their work unfold in real-time. Unfortunately, the impracticality of telling a story this way is usually highlighted via several scenes of actors slowly walking between filming locations. – Alistair R. (full review)

Whether films are set or filmed in Wales, the country and its ability to naturally bring eeriness to the screen thanks to its downcast weather have helped bring to life horror staples like The Old Dark House, The Wolf Man, and An American Werewolf in London. More often than not, you can find these titles on lists of the best horror films, and director Lee Haven Jones and writer Roger Williams throw their hat in the ring with a Welsh horror film of their own. The Feast is a parable of greed that acts as a warning of what could come if we don’t end the exploitation of the land. Themes centering on the environment and the climate crisis are ever-increasing in film, and it hits differently through the lens of horror, as it can more freely convey terrifying truths and present the consequences of actions in a violent,...

It just gets better from there, so be sure to give it a read. Annes Elwy, Nia Roberts and...
