After Di Jimmy Perez deliberately sacrificed his career in the name of justice (if not the law) and went off to pastures new with nurse Meg at the end of series seven, Shetland now has a new sheriff in town. Sort of.
While DS Tosh performs the duties of acting Di at Lerwick Police Station, detective Ruth Calder has come up from London in search of a missing witness in a serious crime case. It just so happens that Calder is an old Shetlander who left the islands as a teenager and was glad to be rid of the place, where she’s confronted by some old ghosts.
Ugly Betty and Agatha Raisin’s Ashley Jensen plays Calder, along with a new guest cast of Scottish stars as well as Shetland’s returning favourites. The latter includes Alison O’Donnell as DS Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh, Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson,...

"What do you two really think of each other?" Trinity Creative has revealed the official US trailer for the dark comedy film Decrypted, a wacky crypto film made by filmmaker Tom Sands. After debuting last year in the UK, the film is now available to watch on VOD in the US if anyone is curious - "the feature film that is taking the crypto community by storm." An outrageous and provocative film about a mismatched Nsa team who kidnap Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, to get the info they need to destroy cryptocurrencies. The botched interrogation forces together a group of people who then get into all kinds of trouble. The cast includes Talisa Garcia, Sophia Myles, David Hoflin, Amanda Abbington, Kevin McNally, Clive Francis, Aki Kotabe, Don Gilet, and Sophie Barker. This looks too dumb and kooky to be any good. But I'm glad someone is willing to...

Whoopi Goldberg has been cast as Bird Woman in the series adaptation of ‘Anansi Boys,’ based on Neil Gaiman’s internationally beloved novel.
Goldberg will take up the mantle of Bird Woman, God of Birds, and one of the show’s key antagonists. The six-episode series stars Malachi Kirby in the leading roles of brothers Fat Charlie and Spider.
Set throughout contemporary London, the series follows Charlie Nancy (Malachi Kirby)—sometimes known as Fat Charlie (it was his father’s nickname for him; he’s not fat)—a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that he was Anansi: Trickster God of stories (played by Delroy Lindo). And he learns that he has a brother. Now that brother, Spider (also played by Kirby), is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting—but making it a lot more dangerous instead.

Stale turkey sandwiches. That's one of the things I most link with Christmas. Forget your crackers and tinsel or your mince pies and Tunis Cakes, or even your Slades and Band Aids, no, it's the thought of the stale turkey sandwiches that lingers in the mind. Simply because the turkey's invariably so big, that it's enough to feed the family for those come-down days from December 26th. And so the family gets that familiar Déjà vu, to the point where summer can't come fast enough.

EastEnders star Don Gilet has insisted that his character Lucas Johnson's current storyline is "not about religion". The actor spoke out in response to suggestions that the killer preacher's long-running plotline is offensive to Christians as fans have seen him using the Bible to justify his actions. Since last year, Lucas has left his ex-partner Trina to die following an accident, killed the ex-husband of his current wife Denise, and - most recently - held Denise captive after attacking her in a rage. However, in an interview with BBC Newsbeat, Gilet commented: "It's (more)...

EastEnders producer John Yorke has revealed that Don Gilet was "ecstatic" about his character Lucas Johnson's murderous personality. Yorke was responding to criticisms from author and journalist Hannah Pool, who claimed that writers turned Lucas into a killer with little reasoning. Pool had suggested: "When Lucas first appeared and as a man of the cloth, I was really interested because religion plays a big part in many black communities. "But then he started killing people and my heart sank. I thought, 'When you have so few black male characters, is this really the best you can do?' "EastEnders very nearly had a credible, working black family and they ruined it by making Lucas a murderer. I feel that a whole family has been written off." Yorke said in response: "If you look at the history of Afro-Caribbean men (more)...

The BBC has dismissed complaints that EastEnders' current storyline featuring Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet) is offensive to Christians. Viewers have seen Johnson murder his wife's ex-husband and leave his own ex-wife to die following an accident. Most recent scenes aired appeared to show the preacher strangle wife Denise (Diane Parish). The BBC said in a statement: "Lucas is certainly not intended to be representative of Christians. He is a very damaged and dangerous individual who has created a twisted version of the Christian 'faith' in his mind to hide behind and to convince himself that his actions are acceptable. As the story unfolds, we will see other characters questioning Lucas's claim (more)...

TV bosses behind British soap opera Eastenders are reshooting scenes for a controversial storyline involving an attack on a prostitute in the wake of a series of shocking murders in the U.K.
An episode of the soap, due to air next week (beg07Jun10), shows character Lucas Johnson, played by Don Gilet, visiting a red light district and attacking a sex worker named Jade.
But several scenes are now being reshot by TV executives as a mark of respect to the families of three murdered prostitutes in Bradford, England.
PhD student Stephen Griffiths, 40, has been charged with the killings.
A representative for the BBC show says, "EastEnders storylines are written many months in advance and any similarity to real-life events is coincidental.
"However, on this occasion, to ensure we do not cause distress to the families involved in the recent tragic events in Bradford we have decided to reshoot some parts of the storyline involving Lucas Johnson."
The news comes shortly after TV bosses in charge of another British soap opera, Coronation Street, cancelled the broadcast of an episode featuring an armed siege after a gunman went on the rampage in North-West England on Wednesday killing 12 people and injuring another 25 before turning the gun on himself.

During next week's episodes - which were planned months ago - man of the cloth-gone-bad Lucas (Don Gilet) was to be seen visiting a local red light district and picking up a call girl named Jade. From there, he would drive her away to a remote location and force her to pray for God's forgiveness. After she attempts to run away, Lucas gives chase and creating a ligature with his tie - as he previously did while killing his wife's ex Owen - he would then seemingly strangle the innocent girl to death. However, following the Cps's decision to charge 40-year-old criminology student Stephen Griffiths with the murders of three call girls, EastEnders execs have decided to drop the prostitute (more)...

Actress and comedienne Tameka Empson returns to EastEnders next month, show bosses have confirmed. The 33-year-old reprises her role as Denise Fox's outlandish sister Kim, who is expected to "cause mayhem" with the locals as she settles into life on Albert Square. Beneath her "viscous and bubbly" exterior lies a "vulnerable creature with low self-esteem". Her comeback fails to impress her brother-in-law Lucas (Don Gilet) who is desperate for her to leave almost as soon as she arrives. Empson last appeared as Kim at the end of 2009 when she and her alcoholic boyfriend Dexter (Robbie Gee) turned up to Denise and Lucas's wedding in November. When Dexter fails to return with her, Denise is left wondering where he is and it soon transpires that Kim (more)...

EastEnders star Don Gilet has joked that he is scared to go shopping following the latest crime of his character Lucas Johnson. Last month, an episode of the Walford soap hinted that Lucas had killed his son's dog Sugar after the collie started sniffing around the spot where his previous victim Owen Turner lay buried. More than 100 viewers went on to complain to the BBC over the matter, prompting the corporation to reassure fans that "EastEnders does not condone the killing of dogs, just as it does not condone killing people". Speaking to TV Times about the controversial moment, Gilet commented: "I don't know how I'm going to cope on the streets when people see me! "No-one's attacked me yet, but I haven't been (more)...

In my quest to figure out good Xmas and Kwanzaa gifts for my people this year, I realized we always recommend movies, DVD’s and VODs, but I’ve seldom read about good books here on S&A. So, I’ve compile a great list for of Black cinephile-based books for the filmgoing audience. Some you’re definitely familiar with, others maybe not, but nonetheless here it is:
Donald Bogle’s books
I’ve been reading Bogle’s books for 20 years now, so considering I’m just on the precipice of my (eek!) mid-30’s, that’s saying a lot of the amount of Black film knowledge that he’s imparted to the masses for decades.
Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies & Bucks
Arguably Bogle’s greatest, if not simply his best known book, “Toms…” is the definitive study of American Black film images going back to the beginning with Birth of...

Speaking about the character's future in an interview with Digital Spy, Santer teased: "Lucas is doing the Lord's work and who knows what that's doing to his head - maybe he'll kill again. EastEnders actor Don Gilet has insisted that his character Lucas Johnson does not simply regard Denise Wicks as a trophy partner. Troubled priest Lucas will be seen killing off Denise's ex-husband Owen Turner (Lee Ross) next week after his suspicions threaten to spoil their wedding plans. Speaking in an interview with Digital Spy, Gilet explained that Lucas and Denise's (Diane Parish) relationship cannot be classed purely as true love nor a marriage of convenience, describing the shop assistant as "the good woman [Lucas] thinks he should have". "It's not quite as simple as a token wife. She's a strong woman and she's his rock, so if those two can survive, they can take on the world," Gilet commented. He continued: "[Lucas has] found a woman who's strong-willed, strong-minded, a good mother (more)...

EastEnders star Don Gilet has admitted that he had mixed feelings when he was told about his character's forthcoming murder twist. The actor's malevolent Lucas Johnson will provide a new Walford shock next week when he kills off his fiancée's ex-husband Owen Turner (Lee Ross). In an interview with Digital Spy, Gilet revealed that while he was thrilled to be offered such a high-profile plot, he also felt sadness when he realised that Lucas's Albert Square journey could soon be over. He commented: "I was excited. I was very happy but of course it's a double-edged sword. You can only do so many bad things in a soap or any kind of drama. There's a ticking clock to say these characters can only stay for so long once they go down the path of doing so much evil. "Somehow they have to make an exit, if it's not with their...
