A man returns home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family, in this love letter to the Filipino-American community.
Jay Chandrasekhar‘s Easter Sunday is definitely a promising step forward when it comes to significant diversity in the film industry, but that’s almost everything it has going for it. This is an extremely slow-paced and outrageously unfunny comedy that fails at its number one goal – making audiences laugh.
This is a film that prides itself on being an incredibly upbeat, feel-good comedy that’ll inspire you to be closer to your family and love one another. Maybe some viewers will leave the theatre feeling more appreciation for their loved ones, but more than likely, most audiences are just going to leave the...

One of the most successful stand-ups in the country with multiple Netflix specials to his name, Jo Koy has entertained millions with tales of his Filipino upbringing. He regales sold-out crowds with stories of his delightful, somewhat overbearing mother, unpacks the intricacies of Filipino food and lifestyle, and analyzes the differences between various Asian cultures.
Now, he has lent his perspective to “Easter Sunday,” a new comedy starring Koy as Joe Valencia, a version of himself, who returns to the Bay Area for the eponymous holiday to deal with his extended Filipino family. It’s the first major studio comedy about a Filipino-American family featuring a nearly-all Filipino cast, and was shepherded to the screen with the help of Steven Spielberg, an avowed fan of Koy’s, whose DreamWorks Pictures co-produced the film.

Jo Koy can be hilarious, riotously so at times. He has no trouble filling auditoriums with his spot-on standup act. Much of what makes him so funny are his observations about his Filipino American family: his aunts, his uncles, his cousins, his sisters and, most of all, his mom. Koy’s gift for deft comedy is too easily forgotten watching the well-intentioned but underwhelming “Easter Sunday,” his first starring vehicle.
Koy plays actor Joe Valencia. Living in Los Angeles, Joe is starting to feel he’s dancing on the razor’s edge between success or failure. He’s got an agent, portrayed by the movie’s director Jay Chandrasekhar. He’s got a beer commercial with a sticky tagline — “Let’s get this party started, baybay!” — that long ago became an albatross. Strangers in stores and family members quote it at him.

Inside the corny chaos of the going-back-home lark “Easter Sunday,” starring comedian Jo Koy, is the point that families are messy. Of course, one doesn’t need to belong to a big Filipino clan like the movie’s onscreen Valencias to grasp that, and it’s almost quaint how that message is articulated for us at the end as some fresh bit of wisdom when, since scene one, relatives in various states of bickering aggravation have been the comedy’s go-to note.
A more lasting takeaway from “Easter Sunday” about what’s messy has to do with vehicles for stand-ups trying to break into movies. Koy, who’s been packing arenas for years with his rabbity energy and humorous windows into family eccentricities and Filipino culture, seemed as natural a fit as any to get some of his act’s lasting characters into a movie. Steven Spielberg certainly thought so...

Filipino Americans receive welcome screen representation in stand-up comedian Jo Koy’s starring cinematic debut about a family holiday celebration. As well they should, since similar films have revolved around Jewish, Black, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Italian and families of virtually every other group you can imagine. It seems only fair that Easter Sunday should provide them the opportunity to take center stage in the sort of chaotic-family-gathering comedy that simultaneously inspires howls of recognition and cringes of embarrassment.
The film, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, The Dukes of Hazzard), revolves around Koy’s character, Joe Valencia, a struggling L.A.-based actor who’s managed to score at least one success, becoming known for the catchphrase, “Let’s get this party started!” in a beer commercial that everyone seems to have seen. This is it. This is pretty much the end of summer.
Sony is pulling in Bullet Train, the last big tentpole of a summer that has grossed 2.9 billion domestic through the end of July per Comscore, +142 from the same pandemic period a year ago, but off 17 from the May-July summer frame in 2019. July alone clocked 1.1 billion, the first billion dollar-plus grossing month since December 2019. However, after Bullet Train‘s start, get ready for a two-and-half month dry period that’s greatly lacking mass-appealing films, but crowded with adult counter-programming. Worldwide estimates for Bullet Train are at 60M with at least 30M stateside for the Brad Pitt starring, David Leitch directed R-rated 87 North film.
Even though the Rotten Tomatoes’ critics score is low on the film at 58, the hope is that good word of mouth off the Rt audience score will trigger an overindexing here for the feature take of Kōtarō Isaka’s 2010 thriller novel.

Jo Koy’s comedy film “Easter Sunday” has released its first trailer, giving a first glimpse into the antics of a loving, chaotic Filipino American family and the large ensemble cast who plays them.
Jo Valencia (Jo Koy) is in for a weekend of good old-fashioned family fun when he and his son (Brandon Wardell) head home for Easter Sunday – “like the Filipino Super Bowl.” A single father and comedian, Jo is famous for his famous beer commercial tagline (“Let’s get the party started babaaaay!”). His career is a source of confusion and hilarity in his family; when he tells his mother (Lydia Gaston) he’s going to film a pilot, she thinks he’s going to play “a pilot on a TV show.” Back home, he runs into an old flame (played by Tiffany Haddish), tells jokes at church and spends time mediating feuds at various family functions,...

Finally, the day we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. No, I’m not talking about any of that “Oscars” silliness, or Neil Patrick Harris taking on hosting duties. No, I’m talking about the 2015 Razzie Awards, in which all the crap of the crop from this past year in cinema at last gets its well-deserved comeuppance.
This year’s “winners” are a particularly disreputable bunch, with Kirk Cameron leading the pack for his atrocious Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas and Michael Bay reliably racking up more Golden Raspberry Awards for Transformers 4: Age of Extinction. The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has announced the nominations for the 35th annual Razzie Awards. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Legend of Hercules, and Transformers 4: Age of Ex-stink-Tion are leading the nominations for worst movies of the year. The only name I don't think belongs on this list of nominations is Mel Gibson for his role in The Expendables 3, because he was freakin' awesome in that!
You can check out the full announcement below, followed by the nominations list. Look it over and let us know if you agree with what they claim is the worst of 2014.
Hollywood was not happy with box office returns for 2014, their lowest-grossing year in recent history. Despite a handful of high-grossing hits, there were way more major misses — movies based on recycled premises and re-worked concepts that were already tired a decade or more ago, the cinematic equivalent of re-treaded tires.

Nominations for the 35th annual Razzie Awards, which satirize “the Worst Achievements in Film for 2014,” are out. Transformers: Age Of Extinction leads the field with seven; while Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas and The Legend Of Hercules are tied at six nods each.
As usual, the Razzie races were unveiled one day before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces its picks for the best achievements of the year in film. But are the Razzies softening at 35? A new category has been added this year for the Razzie Redeemer Award, which acknowledges “that past nominees and ‘winners’ can (and often do) go on to far far better things.” The inaugural class includes Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston and Kristen Stewart.

Color me absolutely astonished that this is genuinely sweet and wholly sex-positive. Unfortunately, it’s also completely unfunny. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of what passes for comedy in Hollywood
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Annie (Cameron Diaz: The Other Woman, The Counsellor) and Jay (Jason Segel: This Is the End, The Five-Year Engagement) need to spice up their bedroom time: they’re still madly in love with each other, but their busy lives — including two rambunctious gradeschoolers — have left them just plain physically exhausted. So they decide to video themselves running through all the positions in The Joy of Sex. It works: they have a wonderful night. But a mishap with the Cloud and some iPads that they had given away as gifts — to family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances — sees the file accidentally distributed to all those other devices.

Having previously teamed up for 2011’s Bad Teacher, director Jake Kasdan reunites with Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel for R-rated comedy Sex Tape. Though it starts strong and finishes well, script flaws mean it’s unfunny for the majority of its run time, squandering the potential of a great cast and an entertaining premise.
Segel and Diaz play Jay and Annie, a married couple whose sex life has dulled in the ten years they’ve been together. With the kids out of the house, the two eventually decide to rekindle their intimacy by making a video of themselves trying out every position in ‘The Joy of Sex’. Though the gambit works, Annie and Jay soon discover that their private video has gone public.
That’s a perfectly fine setup, and the opening act is a strong one too. Crucially the film doesn’t begin, as so many others in the genre do,...

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel get themselves into a rather tricky position in Sex Tape, in more ways than one. The two bounced off each other pretty well in Bad Teacher and apparently, that was enough to convince director Jake Kasdan to throw them together again and cut loose with some cheeky nudity and a naughty premise and the end result is a flabby, largely unfunny comedy. Awkward...
Right away, the couple are seen getting up close and very personal, but those were the good old days fondly recalled by Annie (Diaz) who now writes a parenting blog between chores, sleep and sexual frustration. Her now-husband Jay (Segel) has resorted to booking appointments for possible nookie and when they do find the time, it's all friction and no sparks.

Sex Tape, starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz as a married couple trying to regain the spark in their sex life, failed to spark much enthusiasm with film’s top critics.
Jay (Segel) and Annie (Diaz) have two kids and two careers that are on the cusp of something big. However, their sex life leaves something to be desired. In an effort to get back to their lusty early days as a couple, the two decide to film themselves having sex. Unfortunately, the sex tape doesn’t remain private for long, as Jay accidentally uploads it to the incomprehensible “cloud” – threatening to expose their romp to friends, family and coworkers.
'Sex Tape' Reviews
Written by Kate Angelo and directed by Jake Kasdan, the R-rated comedy failed to amount to a feature film critics could get behind. The concept, according to reviewers, would have fit better as a sitcom episode.

Chicago – Jason Segel is usually fun to watch in just about anything, but he sure isn’t fun in “Sex Tape,” a big studio summer comedy with a fatal flaw - it doesn’t seem to know what’s funny. So like a stand-up comedian on a bad night, it feverishly and desperately throws anything it can think of at the screen in the vague hope that it might be funny even incidentally.
Unfortunately Segel, and his co-writers Nicholas Stoller and Kate Angelo needed to think a little harder. Segel’s best work is rooted in human nature. This one seems rooted in sitcoms instead, and not very good ones at that.
Rating: 1.5/5.0

We’re just past the Summer mid-point and the tide of rated R for “raunchy” feature films rolls on. So far, we’ve gotten a visit from Melissa McCarthy with Tammy and Seth McFarlane starring in (not just his voice like Ted) A Million Ways To Die In The West. We started early in May with the team captain of the Apatow squad, Seth Rogan in the hit Neighbors. And we’ve even had a sequel with the return of Joanh and Channing in 22 Jump Street. This new flick is unique, because it’s more of a reunion than sequel. Three years ago director Jake Kasdan (Orange County) teamed with Jason Segal (another member of the Apatow frat) and Cameron Diaz (co-star of that milestone of “R” comedy hits, There’S Something About Mary) for the box office hit Bad Teacher. Now there’s a sequel in the works for...

Sex Tape gets off to a bad start and I mean a really bad start as Annie (Cameron Diaz) sits down on her mommy blog to tap out her frustrations with the lack of sex in her marriage to Jay (Jason Segel) while recounting the long, sexually charged history of their relationship. Within minutes this movie has you saying, "We get it! Now let's get on with the movie," and yet, the set up takes another 20-30 minutes before the first truly funny scene takes place. As it turns out, that scene, which runs about 7-10 minutes is the only consistently funny scene in the movie and certainly not worth the price of admission. Annie and Jay are married with two kids, the oldest of which is just about to "graduate" from the fourth to the fifth grade, and their marriage has lost its sizzle. However, as Annie is heading...

Jake Kasdan is to directing comedy what Friedrich Nietzsche is to baking apple strudel. Not much.
As with his Bad Teacher (2011), which also stars Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal, Kasdan takes a promising concept and lays waste to it. The highly workable concept is a simple one: a sexually active couple, Jay (Segal) and Annie (Diaz), copulate like bunnies on ecstasy until they wed. Two precocious children later, the O in orgasms has moved on to the O on Cheerios boxes. He now is a music producer, I believe, and she blogs a column entitled "Who’s Yo Mommy?" Yes, copulation is no longer a spontaneous act for this duo. Instead, it has to be planned for ahead of time.
So one night, when the kids are at that grandmother’s, the pair try to get it on as they once used to, but to no avail, until Annie suggests...

Jake Kasdan, you were given a gift the minute Cameron Diaz signed onto Sex Tape. Everyone can’t stop gushing over Jennifer Aniston’s Milf-y good looks, but you better believe there’s Still something about Mary when she’s wearing her birthday suit. It’s simple science; you can’t hate a movie that exploits such a voluptuous, supple tushy every chance possible, because it’d be like hating Michelangelo’s “David,” Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” or Kentucky Fried Chicken’s Double Down – true beauty can’t be denied.
But, once the overtly sexual Goddess releases you from her hypnotic stare, Sex Tape reveals itself to be nothing more than the astoundingly raunchy charade you bought a ticket hoping for. There are many erotic comedies meant to transcend sexuality and raw, carnal natures, but Kasdan’s latest only lives to poke fun at our lusty desires while making...

The screenwriting credits for "Sex Tape" imply that Kate Angelo wrote the initial drafts and that Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller came in to bat clean-up once Segel was on the film as an actor. I'm not sure that's exactly how it went down, but it would explain the occasional lurch from tone to tone that is part of what keeps "Sex Tape" from working completely. As set-ups for farce go, "Sex Tape" has a perfectly functional one. Jay (Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) have been married long enough that they're finding their sex lives have bottomed out completely. It's a very real challenge that parents and other married couples face, especially after you have several children in the house. Jay works in the music industry and Annie writes a popular mommy blog which she may be able to sell to a much larger company. I liked that they didn't...

Cameron Diaz shows off her naughty side in a new clip from the upcoming comedy Sex Tape.
The new movie from director Jake Kasdan stars Diaz and Jason Segel as a couple who film a sex tape to spice up their love life, only for the erotic footage to leak online.
Cameron Diaz on Sex Tape nudity: "You see everything"
This latest clip sees Diaz strip down to propose a night of passion to Segel while their children are away with their grandparents.
Segel wrote Sex Tape with Kate Angelo and Nicholas Stoller (Muppets Most Wanted, Yes Man).
Sex Tape is also a reunion for Kasdan, Segel and Diaz, who all previously worked together on Bad Teacher.
The movie opens on July 18 in the Us and on September 3 in the UK. Watch a red-band trailer below (warning: mature content):...

One major contender for comedy of the summer (though Neighbors may already have that one in the bag) is definitely Columbia Pictures’ upcoming Sex Tape, in which a bored married couple (Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz) decide to spice up their love life by recording themselves recreating every position in The Joy of Sex. However, when their lengthy video is accidentally uploaded to the cloud and distributed across every iPad they gave out the preceding Christmas (because rich people problems), the couple find themselves racing against time to destroy every copy of the sex tape before their friends, loved ones and even their postman can get a glimpse.
Our first clip from the comedy puts the focus squarely on Diaz’s sex appeal – and seeing as Diaz recently spoke to Esquire about going nude before the camera for the first time in her career for Sex Tape (“It’s a first for me.

At this point, Sony Pictures might as well just show us the whole Sex Tape in question from the comedy reuniting Bad Teacher stars Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz. This particular look at the film is pretty much exactly the same as the most recent trailer from the United Kingdom that we recently saw, and if it wasn't for Rob Corddry and the promise of Rob Lowe doing cocaine, we probably wouldn't be laughing much. These feels like a CBS sitcom version of an R-rated sex comedy, but maybe there's hope that whatever they're not showing in the trailers is infinitely funnier. We'll find out soon enough. Columbia Pictures has released a new red-band trailer for the upcoming R-rated comedy "Sex Tape" starring Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, and Rob Lowe.
Film is directed by Jake Kasdan from a screenplay written by Kate Angelo and Jake Kasdan & Jason Segel.
When Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense – but ten years and two kids later, the flame of their love needs a spark. To kick things up a notch, they decide – why not? – to make a video of themselves trying out every position in The Joy of Sex in one marathon three-hour session. It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video is no longer private. At one point, we were supposed to get a sequel to Bad Teacher, and while Sex Tape seems like the spiritual sequel to the comedy with Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz reuniting in the film also directed by Jake Kasdan, it doesn't look nearly as good. Diaz and Segel just don't seem to have any real chemistry, and their marriage feels forced, and not in the way that the story implies that their marriage has lost spark. Plus, the premise is just a little too over-the-top, and the lengths to which they go to get this sex tape back are just insane. But at least the co-stars Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper and Rob Lowe seem to bring some laughs. Did you care for Sony’s “Bad Teacher”? Would you want to see a sequel? The movie was just okay, right? But before you forget, that R-rated comedy grossed $216 million worldwide. You might not think those are spectacular numbers, but it is higher than “Knocked-Up” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” two mid/late aughts pictures that were heralded for making the R-rated comedy bankable again. So there’s no sequel (not yet anyhow, but it is in development), but for Sony, they’re getting the next best thing. Jake Kasdan, who directed “Bad Teacher,” is back with its two stars Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel for "Sex Tape." Written by Kate Angelo, Kasdan and Segel, their latest collaboration is one that everyone will love...at least Seo-wise. Co-starring Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper and Rob Lowe, the premise is likely self-evident: A married couple wake up to discover that the sex tape...

"If the mailman has seen my vagina, we're moving." We've already seen some of the R-rated comedy that will be on display in Sex Tape, starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz as a couple who are desperately trying to track down and delete a homemade video of them having sex that accidentally got uploaded to the dastardly cloud. We weren't thoroughly impressed by the red band trailer because the comedy seemed to get a little too ridiculous and exaggerated at times. Now a new green band trailer has arrived that's somewhat better, but still hints at some of the over-the-top comedy that's in store. We're hoping for the best. Watch! Over the past few years, Jason Segel has seen his star rise. Known mostly for his work on the tv shows Freaks and Geeks and How I Met Your Mother, Segel has added a number of roles in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jeff, Who Lives At Home, and The Muppets to his filmography. Many have been intrigued to see what he does next, which thus raised interest in his next project when his involvement was announced. Titled Sex Tape, the film is directed by Jake Kasdan, working from a screenplay by Kate Angelo. Segel stars alongside Cameron Diaz, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, Jack Black, and Rob Lowe. By now, there are two things that you can expect from any buzz-worthy summer comedy: a raunchy red band trailer and an unwelcome amount of product placement. For the new film Sex Tape, which reunites Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel with their Bad Teacher director Jake Kasdan, we get both.
In Sex Tape, releasing July 25, Diaz and Segel play Annie and Jay, a married couple whose love life has gone sour. With hopes to rekindle the fiery heat they shared when they first dated, they decide to film themselves having sex – for three straight hours. Unbeknownst to them, Jay’s Cloud account uploads the footage for all of his friends and family members to view. Now, the couple has to reclaim the iPads they gave out as parting gifts at a Christmas party before their very private video is shared with the world.
Sex Tape looks like it will have some fun satirizing modern technology.

Now that "How I Met Your Mother" is over, Jason Segel has decided to make a "Sex Tape" with his "Bad Teacher" co-star Cameron Diaz. The duo play a married couple who try to spice up their love life by making a lurid home video, only to accidentally upload it to a dozen or so iPads® they gave out to friends and family for the holidays. Gags with attack dogs, clueless parents, casual nudity and not-so-horrible bosses ensue. Plus, you can watch Rob Lowe ditch clean-living and get back into hard drugs. We'll say it's Nsfw, although it's fairly tame besides some expected sexuality (but no nudity) and some seemingly forced curse words "Sex Tape" is directed by "Bad Teacher's" Jake Kasdan, and written by Kate Angelo. It also stars Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, and Jack Black, although the latter doesn't appear in the trailer. "Sex Tape" opens July 25.

Put on your headphones for this one, folks.
It's been a minute since Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel starred in "Bad Teacher" together. They've reunited for the dark comedy "Sex Tape," and it feels so... good? Annie and Jay are a bored married couple looking to rekindle that special spark of sexy sexiness, so obviously they dress up and record themselves doing the dirty. Except, being the digital age and all, they use an iPad. Jay is sort of a schmuck and accidentally uploads it to the cloud -- the cloud is, as he says, "a f-king mystery," which we'll allow as a plausible excuse -- which means that all the people they gave iPads to can now access their video.
Is this the equivalent of being that person who holds up a giant iPad to take a photo in public? Because that's really embarrassing. Also, isn't the title a misnomer,...
