Ace Eddies: ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Everything Everywhere’ win over Oscar rivals for Best Film Editing
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

Continuing our look at the below-the-line crafts categories at this year’s Oscars, we get to film editing. The editor(s) on a movie are frequently the most important collaborators with a director. The director and editor will frequently sit in an edit bay for hours, days, and even months to craft the pace and feel of a movie until it’s just right, as is the case with the five movies nominated this year.
SEECan ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ win the Oscar categories the 1930 film failed to claim?
This is a particularly invigorating year for the category. We only have one previous Oscar winner from just a few years ago, so we could see a new Oscar champ this year. Martin McDonagh's "The Banshees of Inisherin" is another battle of words from the storyteller, and editor Mikkel E. G. Nielsen pieced it all together. Nielsen, who previously worked on "The Sound of Metal," edited the film with elegance; it's an intricate story, but the audience never overtly feels the hand of the filmmakers.
The editor earned an Academy Award nomination for his work on "The Banshees of Inisherin." The film was a new experience for him: he had never edited such an extreme yet delicate balance of comedy and drama, and a Martin McDonagh film is basically a crash-course in that regard. Recently, Nielsen told us about his collaboration with the filmmaker and editing some of the finest performances of the year.

The Oscar category of Best Film Editing is historically dominated by war epics, action pictures, multicharacter dramas and musicals. But two years ago, in a rare and wonderful exception to the rule, the statuette was won by Mikkel E.G. Nielsen for his delicate work on the “Sound of Metal,” a film in which the editing was crucial in synching the audience to its main character’s sonic experience.
Nielsen’s mastery of rhythm and tone also proved invaluable for the sly currents of Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” the acclaimed tragicomedy for which he is nominated this year. The 49-year-old Danish editor made history in 2021 as the first Scandinavian winner in the category, and this year he’s the only previous nominee in the category.

Fun fact: The last time a Best Picture Oscar winner also scored a craft victory was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” which took home awards for Paul Austerberry’s production design and Alexandre Desplat’s score in 2018. Which means that Best Picture winners “Coda” (no craft nominations) “Nomadland”, “Parasite”, and “Green Book” (editing) all left empty-handed as far as craft wins.
But look for the five-year craft drought to end if frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wins Best Picture. As part of its Oscar-leading 11 nominations, it captured craft nods for costume design, editing, score, and song. It certainly has momentum on its side as the populist favorite. In addition to Best Picture, it’s a serious above-the-line contender for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (the Daniels), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan...

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) and “Dune” (2022) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Film Editing predictions.))
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

Colin Farrell is basking in the glow of delivering four acclaimed performances in 2022 and receiving his long overdue first Oscar nomination for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Next, he’s gearing up to reprise his role as Oz — a.k.a. the Penguin — for the spinoff television series to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” which he starts shooting on Feb. 28.
“It’s going to be an eight-part thing,” Farrell tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. The Academy has released the list of nominations for the 2023 Oscars. Everything Everywhere All at Once led the pack this year with 11 nominations, followed closely by the war drama All Quiet On The Western Front and dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin.
A few actors who made big comebacks this year received nominations for their roles, including Brendan Fraser for The Whale and former child actor Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Also in the running for best actor are Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Billy Nighy and Paul Mescal, all first-time nominees. In a surprising nod to indie film To Leslie, Andrea Riseborough scored a nomination for best actress. The race also includes Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.
Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars, making his third appearance as emcee after his previous hosting stints in 2017 and 2018.

The nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards are one of the least-dignified things I have had to scramble with after (admittedly) sleeping in late, and if it’s never the right time to have a sincere opinion on what this sort-of-defined yet ultimately amorphous group thinks about the 20-or-so movies they bothered to see at a paid screening it’s also best to get onto the nominations while (also) noting it’s pretty hilarious Andrea Riseborough’s hail-mary To Leslie campaign worked, Elvis‘ editing nomination might suggest “cuts a lot” is their primary requirement, and the film industry might be at its lowest point ever if the Russo brothers win Best Picture statues.

“Editing is like painting with all the different elements of film making,” declares Oscar-winning editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen A.C.E. (“Sound of Metal”) about his work on “The Banshees of Inisherin.” For our recent webchat he adds, “You have a script, you have the actors giving an interpretation of the script and then you have the elements of sound and visuals and music,” he says. “It’s about trying to bring all these amazing performances together with a great script and then try to find as good a balance as possible and take you through this whole journey.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)
In crafting Rian Johnson’s whodunit, editor Bob Ducsay took a bold approach to this intricate story, placing key information in plain sight. To be sure, just watch the Netflix movie a second or third time and see how many clues were right there all along (such as a nod to one character’s true identity and the source of a crucial cocktail). The meticulously crafted story follows a group of self-proclaimed disrupters who are invited to a weekend on the private island of their wealthy friend Miles (Edward Norton). Daniel Craig reprises his Knives Out character, detective Benoit Blanc, who is also at the island getaway when a murder takes place on the first night.
“It was important to us to make sure that the audience didn’t feel cheated,” Ducsay explains, noting that they decided to be “as honest as we could be with the audience.

For nearly eight years, the name Martin McDonagh was synonymous with the West End and Broadway, where he was regularly praised for his work as a playwright. He then won his first Oscar for his live action short “Six Shooter” in 2006, and that would be a fine benchmark that proved McDonagh was ready to take his talent from stage to screen. Now he’s back in the awards discussion thanks to Searchlight Pictures’ “The Banshees of Inisherin.”
Four years after “Six Shooter,” McDonagh directed his debut feature, “In Bruges,” starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason. Months after premiering at Sundance, Farrell would win a Golden Globe for his performance, while McDonagh received another Oscar nomination, this time for his Best Original Screenplay. (The British Academy rewarded McDonagh with a BAFTA for said screenplay.)
Although McDonagh’s second feature, “Seven Psychopaths,” came and went without much notice in 2012, he followed that...

Writer/director Martin McDonagh has a rare gift, he can wrestle beauty from bad behaviour, poor decisions and abject squirming shame. For The Banshees of Inisherin, he drew deep upon that gift to craft an unforgettable and utterly bonkers journey through the implosion of a friendship between two boring men. You will not come away unscathed.
Every day Inisherin islanders Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson) meet at their local pub to share a pint and pass the time. The two men have been good friends for years and the routine is something that Pádraic – a self-proclaimed nice man – has come to rely on. The life of a smallholder is a solitary one and, besides his loving sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon), Colm is Pádraic’s only confidant.
Unfortunately, Pádraic doesn’t really have anything interesting to confide. His small life has rendered his small talk microscopic and Colm, realising...

Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh is back, this time with a self-described “break-up story” about two friends whose abrupt parting of ways spurs unforeseen consequences.
Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reunite with each other and McDonagh for the upcoming film, having previously worked together on the director’s well-loved 2008 crime comedy “In Bruges.” Earlier this year, McDonagh told Vanity Fair he hoped “The Banshees of Inisherin” would entertain the cult fans of “In Bruges” in similar ways, but that it “could be a little more, at least at the outset, odder or weirder — and definitely something different.”

How the History-Making 2021 Oscars Went Down, from Chloé Zhao to Anthony Hopkins’ No-Zoom Anticlimax
However low the ratings turn out to be for the two-month-delayed 2021 Oscars, the three rookie Oscar show producers, Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, and Glenn Collins, took advantage of their pandemic limitations to apply a fresh twist to the tried-and-true awards-show formula. They wanted viewers to escape into a cinematic experience miles away from the trapped-at-home feel of watching television and Zoom. Soderbergh’s watch-a-movie Oscars deployed roving wide-angle lenses, 24 fps images, and a live Questlove soundtrack to take audiences closer to attendees, sitting two by two at plush banquettes and small tables in the blue-curtained intimate amphitheatre erected inside iconic Union Station. As Soderbergh promised beforehand, “I want the whole thing to announce itself out of the gate as different.”

Netflix wrapped up the longest Oscar season in history by dominating the craft awards Sunday night, splitting four prizes between “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, starring Oscar nominee Viola Davis as the trailblazing, ’20s blues singer, and David Fincher’s monochromatic “Mank,” (cinematography and production design), the biopic about Herman J. Mankiewicz’ frenzied scripting of “Citizen Kane.” Overlooked, though, was Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The two Oscars for “Ma Rainey’s” were expected for the bold and gritty verisimilitude demanded by Davis and supplied by 89-year-old costume designer Ann Roth (a two-time winner), makeup stylist Sergio Lopez Rivera, and hair stylists Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson (who made Oscar history as the first Black female winners from their category). They made her sexy and subversive with a flashy wardrobe, gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair.

‘Sound Of Metal’ Editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen Wins Home Editing Oscar; Amazon Movie Takes Second Award
Amazon’s Sound Of Metal took home its second Oscar tonight by being victorious in the Best Film Editing category with film editor Mikkel E. G. Nielsen scoring his first Academy win.
The drama followed its BAFTA triumph in the same field by beating close competitor The Trial of The Chicago Seven, which had won the Ace Eddie Awards and expected to be Sound Of Metal‘s biggest competitor. It was Sound Of Metal‘s second victory of the night also taking home best sound.
After receiving the award from presenter Harrison Ford, Nielsen made sure to first thank Denmark in doing it’s part to fund the film school because without that he wouldn’t be where he is today.
I’m from Denmark, I would like to greet Denmark because they extremely bold at funding the Danish film school,” he said. “That’s amazing, this is what you...

“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” won the Ace Eddie Award for Best Edited Drama Film on Sunday, making it a top contender to win Best Film Editing at the Oscars. Editor Alan Baumgarten defeated two editors he will also face at the Oscars — Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” and Mikkel E.G. Nielsen for “Sound of Metal,” with the latter expected to be “Trial’s” biggest competition after his BAFTA win. If the cards fall as awards prognosticators are expecting them to, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” would join a very small group of films to only win Best Film Editing.
“Trial” has five other Oscar nominations but is not projected to win any of those categories, according to the latest Gold Derby odds. If the courtroom drama walked away with just Best Film Editing, it would become only the ninth film to do so. The first was “Eskimo” (1934), which...

The 36th Independent Spirit Awards aired Thursday, April 22 on IFC in a virtual ceremony hosted by Melissa Villaseñor (“Saturday Night Live”). (Read our live blog to see how it all went down.) By the end of the evening, “Nomadland” had emerged as the biggest winner with four trophies: Best Picture, Best Director (Chloe Zhao), Best Film Editing (Zhao) and Best Cinematography (Joshua James Richards). With the Oscars just three days away, can we expect “Nomadland” to prevail there as well in all of these crucial categories?

The films in the running for the 2021 Best Film Editing Oscar are: Yorgos Lamprinos (“The Father”), Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”), Frédéric Thoraval (“Promising Young Woman”), Mikkel E.G. Nielsen (“Sound of Metal”) and Alan Baumgarten (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order by “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (71/20), “Nomadland” (9/2), “The Father” (9/2), and “Promising Young Woman” (9/2)
Of the five individuals in this year’s lineup, only Baumgarten has been nominated before. He, Jay Cassidy, and Crispin Struthers were collectively recognized for “American Hustle” in 2014 but lost to Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger (“Gravity”).
Any one of the newcomers could become the fifth cutter in eight years to prevail on their first outing. Sanger was the first, followed by Margaret Sixel, John Ottman, and Andrew Buckland.

This season’s editing race features five Best Picture nominees with very visceral stories: Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” (serving as her own editor), Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” and Emerald Fennel’s “Promising Young Woman.” However, “The Trial of the Chicago 7″ is now the favorite, bolstered by its Ace Eddie win.
Editor Alan Baumgarten had the most ambitious editorial task: balancing three story threads in “Rashomon”-like fashion with multiple perspectives and jumping back and forth in time, from the overheated courtroom drama to the violent, vérité-like riots during the ’68 Democratic Convention to the bitter political rivalry between Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne) and Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen). Plus, Baumgarten oversaw a sprawling six-minute prologue that was like lighting a fuse with historical context and character introductions.

With just eight days to go before the Academy Awards, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” took the top prize at the Ace Eddie Awards, winning Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic), for acclaimed editor Alan Baumgarten Matthew Friedman and Andrew Dickler won Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) for “Palm Springs,” which did not receive any nominations for the 93rd Oscars, unlike “The Trial of the Chicago 7” with its six. But in two other categories, the likely Oscar winners gained steam: “Soul” won Best Edited Animated Feature Film and “My Octopus Teacher” Best Edited Documentary (Feature), solidifying both of those films as the frontrunners in the Oscars’ Animated Feature and Documentary Feature categories.
On the TV front, “Schitt’s Creek,” which won’t even be eligible for Emmy consideration this year following its series finale in early 2020, won Best Edited Comedy Series for Commercial Television, with “Ted Lasso” winning in the Comedy category for Non-Commercial Television.

Spoiler alert: This article discusses the ending of “Sound of Metal.”
For his elegant work on shaping the structure of “Sound of Metal,” film editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen has won a BAFTA and been nominated for an Oscar. Even the mentioning of those words caused the 47-year-old Dane to shake his head and smile.
“I mean, really, nominated for an Oscar,” Nielsen told TheWrap from his home in Copenhagen, Denmark. “That’s just not something that happens.”
“Sound of Metal,” starring Best Actor nominee Riz Ahmed as a drummer who loses his hearing, was filmed over 24 days in 2018, nearly three years ago. The movie wasn’t acquired by Amazon Studios until after its premiere at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival.”It’s not a film made out of a desire to win awards,” Nielsen said. “So I’m extremely honored and very surprised, because for all of us who worked on it,...
