Fresh off the first-ever Netflix is a Joke comedy festival, the streamer confirmed which performances will be available to view in the coming weeks, including tributes to late comedians such as Bob Saget and Robin Williams and the yet-to-be-announced date for Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’s groundbreaking set at Dodger Stadium.
Featuring a wide range of events and stars, the festival also made headlines for some of its comedians’ jokes, such as Pete Davidson’s digs at Kanye West. But the biggest news of the fest was when Dave Chappelle was tackled on stage during his set at the Hollywood Bowl, with the attacker being charged with four misdemeanor counts. For its part, Netflix responded by saying, “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.” Chappelle’s four sold-out shows are not included in...

Is it possible that the biggest competition facing social-media platforms such as Instagram comes from the influencers who use Instagram and other platforms?

That is, if I'm a big-name influencer, and I cut a sponsorship deal with a brand, I'm actually taking money away from the platform where that sponsored video runs. The brand could have just bought ads directly on the platform, but my sponsored video is probably better, probably cheaper, and connects directly with fans in a way that plain old advertising almost never does. Money that comes to me directly is money the platform never sees, and never gets to slice off a share.

There Are A Lot of Subscription Video On-Demand Services, But Who's Going To Pay For Them All?
Even though Netflix is no longer the nation’s most valuable entertainment company (a miss on quarterly subscriber growth sent shares back below Fox-buying Disney), it still can take credit for the recent stampede of subscription video services streaming into the market.
Now, Netflix and established competitors such as HBO Now, Amazon Prime, Hulu, CBS All Access, and ESPN+ are about to be joined in the fight for subscription dollars by DC Universe, Walmart, Spotify, a second Disney service, and Apple, among others.
On a much smaller scale, this past week Zeus launched launched as a $3/month subscription channel from online influencers King Bach, DeStorm Power, and Amanda Cerny. Kid-focused Pocket.watch also announced a $15 million funding round led by its putative competitor, Nickelodeon owner Viacom.

Eighteen years ago, Kent Weed co-founded A. Smith & Co. with the production company’s namesake, Arthur Smith. A lot has happened since. A. Smith & Co. has produced a score of successful reality programs, including “American Ninja Warrior” for NBC and “Hell’s Kitchen” for Fox, as well as the upcoming “Titan Games” with Dwayne Johnson for NBC.
But in recent years, Weed’s life outside the company has been busier. He has two young children, became coach of his son’s baseball team, and joined the board of trustees for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s environmental activism organization Waterkeeper Alliance.
“This business takes it toll,” Weed told Variety. “It takes a lot of hours. Running a company is 10 times more than just doing a show. I wasn’t able to do all of this and run the company at the same time.”

Beachfront Media is expanding beyond its mobile video specialty. The mobile video technology and distribution company is launching a new over-the-top service dubbed Rise to help its creators reach new audiences on devices like Apple TVs.
The premium, full-service Rise is described in a release as helping “the most popular online video creators and digital media networks deploy apps directly to all the places millennials consume content.” In addition to Apple TVs, Rise can also place Beachfront Media creators’ programming on Roku devices, Android TVs, and Amazon Fire TVs. Rise provides analytics and various monetization options to creators, such as Svod subscriptions and video ads, and also gives creators access to an exclusive video upload feature.

In June of this year, Beachfront Media announced a partnership with Amazon to provide video content creators the opportunity to create and place their own, dedicated apps full of their online video programming on TVs and beyond. The technology ensures creators can deploy their apps and programming onto any device to which you can hook up an Amazon Fire TV box and/or stick. Said programming is most likely already available on YouTube (or on whatever platform to which the creator normally uploads his/her videos), but the app guarantees a stronger measure of control over a video’s money making capabilities outside of your typical YouTube revenue share. Top tier creators like Michelle Phan are already utilizing the service to create an Amazon app for her Icon Style network.

Google's Q3 earnings report revealed that more than 40% of YouTube traffic comes from mobile devices, and with the site doing everything it can to bring massive advertising budgets to smartphones and tablets, that percentage is only going to go up. With this trend in mind, video technology company Beachfront Media is looking to assist YouTube creators as they attempt to make big bucks on tiny screens. It has launched Beachfront Builder 2.0, a platform that helps users create all-encompassing mobile apps. Beachfront is hawking its new Builder as easy-to-use and open to any creator who wants to beef up his or her mobile presence. Essentially, the platform spawns apps that combine social media accounts with monetized video streams while also directing fans to Google Play and iTunes with the touch of the button. This theoretically allows users to 'control' their mobile audiences as easily as those that take directions from finely-tuned YouTube homepages.
