(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Particularly in light of his recent output, it's hard to think of a more remarkable career than that of Nicolas Cage. The man has had insanely high highs such as his Oscar-winning performance in "Leaving Las Vegas" and his starring role in blockbuster hits like "National Treasure." He's played a Marvel Comics superhero (Ghost Rider), he's starred in more direct-to-video movies than anyone can possibly recall, and he's turned in some legendarily wacky performances (see: "Vampire's Kiss"). He even battled himself in the summer of 1997.
The point is, Cage has had an amazing career that has recently revived itself in a huge way as of late thanks to stellar performances in movies like "Pig" and "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent." Yet,...

Sheriff leaves Aardman Animations after 25 years.
Cape Town-based Triggerfish Animation has appointed Arthur Sheriff as an advisor to the company.
London-based Sheriff has been Aardman’s Head of Communications for the past 25 years and will now step down from that post.
Sheriff said: “While I’m sad to be moving on from Aardman, I see in Triggerfish an exciting young company bursting with creative ideas. They remind me very much of Aardman before their huge worldwide success.
“I’ve had the pleasure of advising their management team in a ‘non-official’ capacity for the last few years, and now that I spend a considerable portion of the year in Cape Town, I’m looking forward to contributing in a more active role.”
Triggerfish has worked on Adventures in Zambezia and Khumba and is currently in production (with Magic Light) on Stick Man; more features are in development.

Briefly: Aardman Animation has a big presence in movie theaters this year and next, as the company is prepping two animated features for release. There's the CGI family holiday film Arthur Christmas, for which we just saw a pair of new trailers [1]. And then there's Pirates!, which is a stop-motion picture that looks like quite a bit of fun [2]. And now Aardman's Nick Park, the man most famously responsible for Wallace & Gromit, is reportedly writing a new feature that does not feature his famous inventor/canine duo. Bleeding Cool [3] learned of the project during a visit to the Aardman office, and says that company spokesperson Arthur Sheriff said "Park is currently working furiously on a new script." (That's a paraphrase quoted from BC.) All that is known about the project at this point is that Park intends to use stop-motion animation for the film rather than CGI. That's all I need to hear,...

Aardman Animations to open country's first public animation academy in Khayelitsha township on outskirts of Cape Town
They have struggled into the wrong trousers, picnicked on the moon and foiled a rampaging were-rabbit.
Now the cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his wily canine sidekick, Gromit, are taking on their most ambitious adventure yet – bringing animation to one of South Africa's most violent townships.
David Sproxton, the co-founder of Aardman Animations, will open the country's first public animation academy, in Khayelitsha, the giant township on the outskirts of Cape Town, tomorrow.
The yellow bricks and bright blue roof of False Bay Good Hope College rise from a grey landscape of shacks and low-grade social housing.
Studies have found that as many as half of Khayelitsha's households struggle to put one meal on the table each day. The school drop-out rate is high because of gang violence and teacher absenteeism.

LONDON -- Props and sets from the Wallace and Gromit movies were feared lost in a Monday blaze that swept an Aardman Animations warehouse in Bristol. "We woke up to the most fantastic news this morning that Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit had debuted in the United States at No. 1," said company spokesman Arthur Sheriff. "But this has really thrown us", he added. "It's our entire history". Sixty firefighters battled flames 100 feet high that engulfed the warehouse at around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, causing the roof to collapse, a fire service spokeswoman said.
