Sure, while actors can play any kind of role, the training necessary to play these characters is also a crucial aspect of the process, often reaching previously unheard-of levels. That being said, when Michael Keaton played Riggan Thomson in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Birdman (2014), he took on a new challenge in his already lucrative acting career.
Given that Keaton had starred in a superhero flick, Batman Returns, that came out in 1992, Birdman was undoubtedly an interesting one. It was shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki to give the impression that it is a single, uninterrupted 119-minute shot. In order to pull it off, the filmmakers combined roughly ten different takes with ingenious special effects.

The filming process was, of course, exhausting and exhilarating, pushing Keaton to his limits both physically and mentally.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's Oscar-winning film "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" was a pretty ballsy move to make in 2014. The film stars Michael Keaton as actor Riggan Thompson, a once-massive Hollywood action star who has aged out of action roles. Notably, Riggan starred in three crowd-pleasing superhero movies about Birdman, a Batman-like vigilante. Keaton, of course, played Batman in 1989, 1991, and 2023.
Riggan is set to star in a high-profile Broadway production, hoping to prove to himself and the world that he is a pliable and capable actor, not merely a nostalgia-laced superhero figure. There is a lot of dialogue in "Birdman" about how superhero movies are the antithesis of art and that superhero actors are aggressively robbed of their thespian instincts. Good actors, Riggan complains, are ripped from meaningful projects and thrust into commercial FX bonanzas where they are expected to do little beyond pose and wear silly costumes.

Tom Cruise made headlines earlier this year with the announcement that he was returning to Warner Bros. after a decade to collaborate on a new project. A while back ago, fans were given the exciting update that Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu is helming the film. This makes the new project even more exciting for Tom Cruise as the director’s achievements speak volumes about his films.

Adding to the excitement, it was reported that the project is being treated as a top secret at David Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Discovery. No plot details are released at this time, except the fact that Iñárritu teamed up with his Oscar-winning Birdman writers for the script of the film.

I’ve been interviewing people for a long time, but as a child of the 80s, one of my bucket list interviews has always been Michael Keaton. Not only was he Batman and Beetlejuice, but he also starred in a whole bunch of childhood favourites of mine, including Johnny Dangerously (coming soon to The Best Movie You Never Saw), The Dream Team, Gung-Ho, and even a drama he did called Clean & Sober, which for some reason I enjoyed as a child.

Fresh off his Batman stare-down at the Oscars, Keaton is in theaters this week with his film noir throwback Knox Goes Away. In it, he plays a hitman stricken with early-onset dementia. For over 30 years, Mark Hamill voiced DC’s Clown Prince of Crime in varied endeavors, starting from the very beloved Batman: The Animated Series. Although the likelihood of the Star Wars actor ever returning to the role is minimal in light of Kevin Conroy’s passing, there’s one person to thank behind his iteration of the Batman arch-nemesis coming into existence in the first place.
And funnily enough, it almost seems fateful that it was none other than Michael Keaton, one of the actors who embodied The Caped Crusader in live-action films, albeit to initial flak.

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for its tenth birthday: more on the release here.
It’s been nearly ten years since the release of Clint Eastwood’s biggest film at the US box office, the Bradley Cooper-headlined American Sniper. Based on the true story of Chris Kyle, played by Cooper in the film, the movie grossed a staggering $350m at the American box office, and earned Oscar nominations too, including one for Best Picture.
That particular year in fact, the entirely neutral folks at Fox News ran the headline when Birdman took home Best Picture at the Oscars something along the lines that ‘American Sniper loses Best Picture’.
Wherever you stand on the film, and it’s got a lot of qualities, it’s also the movie where Clint Eastwood got fed up waiting for a realistic baby, and just used a doll instead.

Following lots of speculation and reports, Tom Cruise looks to be heading for a career shift back towards dramatic roles.
Just yesterday we covered a story that was being widely reported, suggesting that Tom Cruise was interested in securing a role in Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic. That report was confirmed by multiple separate sources and was apparently one of the projects Cruise discussed when he signed a deal with Warner Bros last month.
That deal looks increasingly like it will provide Cruise with the foundation to shift his career into a new stage, focusing less on action parts and slipping back into the kind of dramatic roles that were once a key staple of his filmography.
We know now what the first step of that strategy will probably look like, following the announcement that Cruise will be starring in the next project from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, the director of Birdman and The Revenant.

Tom Cruise will star in the new feature from The Revenant filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in talks to acquire the package, which marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Revenant nearly a decade ago.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for the feature project that was written by Iñárritu, Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone.
The project comes after Cruise inked a splashy (but not exclusive) deal with Warner Bros. last month, leading to rampant speculation over what the pact would yield. The feature also fits the bill of rumors that Cruise is eager to work with auteurs after spending much of the past decade on franchise projects, including the Mission: Impossible films and Top Gun: Maverick, all at Paramount. “Are streamers scaling back?” and “Is this a renaissance period for indie financed films?” were two of the questions at the heart of a Zurich Summit panel this morning, featuring CAA’s Roeg Sutherland, WME’s Katie Irwin and Oscar-winning producer John Lesher (Birdman).
While the eye-watering streamer acquisitions of a few years ago may be fewer and further between out of markets, streamers are still essential buyers, as witnessed by splashy deals for Hit Man and Woman Of The Hour at Toronto and May December in Cannes.
“I don’t think they are retreating, I think they are being agile”, said Irwin of sales and finance operation WME Independent. “I think there’s a constant changing tack and I think they’re pointing their money in different ways.”
“Look at the deal for Hit Man“, noted moderator Sutherland who serves as co-head of CAA Media Finance. The film was...

With temperatures starting to drop and darker nights drawing in here in the UK, reminding us that summer is almost over, doesn’t a TV festival on the sunny south coast of Spain sound pretty glorious right now?
We certainly think so, and the first ever edition of the new South International Series Festival, set to be held in Cadiz from 6 October, fits the bill perfectly. Created for the public and industry professionals alike, the South International Series Festival is the first festival of its kind in southern Europe, and was created with the intention to promote the audiovisual small-screen offerings from this region and beyond.
Over seven days, attendees can enjoy a programme including the very best of fiction and unscripted series, some undiscovered gems, and displays of cutting-edge innovation in the industry, with a focus on European and global Spanish-language series, and a spotlight on African nations. The...

"Rick and Morty" is coming back in October for season 7, but when the Adult Swim animated series returns, you might notice a slight change in the title characters. Then again, based on the new trailer, maybe a lot of people won't have any idea that series creator Justin Roiland, who also provided the voices for both title characters, has been replaced by soundalike actors who have yet to be named.
That's right, this new "Rick and Morty" season 7 trailer debuts the new voices for Rick and Morty, and for the most part, whoever is providing these voices does a pretty damn good job. Morty is clearly the best replacement, because Rick occasionally sounds a bit off, but the actors who have been hired to replicate Justin Roiland's unique character voices mostly nail the vocals of their predecessor. Listen for yourself below!

“Judge the art, not the artist.” That is the mantra we hear each and every time someone in the entertainment world is accused of heinous behavior, and it’s one that was repeated by artistic director Alberto Barbera prior to this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Bradley Cooper is undoubtedly feeling the Bern. There’s something very endearing about Cooper’s star persona, not least the fact that, of all modern Hollywood leading men, the mere idea of a “star persona” is something he actually earns. He is charismatic, good-looking, talented (also showcasing talent some felt he didn’t have), and has pretty good taste. Though Paul Thomas Anderson hit on something deploying him for an edgier role as one-man hurricane movie producer and cad Jon Peters.

"You can't go half-way with 'Swan Lake.'" Who's ready to dive head-first into the world of ballet? Dogwoof has revealed an official promo trailer for the documentary film Swan Song, premiering soon at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. Not to be confused with Mahershala Ali's sci-fi film Swan Song or Udo Kier's indie comedy film Swan Song, both with the same name, this is a doc about the opera "Swan Lake". The Canadian film offers a deep look of the incredible devotion, artistry and sacrifices that Karen Kain and the National Ballet of Canada dancers make in their pursuit of creating something unique, meaningful, beautiful. TIFF says it's a powerfully intimate look at the process of putting on a performance of "Swan Lake". The fest adds: "Even something as simple as Kain pushing for the dancers to abandon the pink tights of the swan costumes — thus acknowledging...

Director Joe Stephenson’s Doctor Jekyll, “a modern interpretation” of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, wrapped production over a year ago, and while we continue to wait to hear when we’re going to have a chance to see the movie, Fangoria has unveiled a new image that shows gender fluid comedian/actor Eddie Izzard (The Lost Symbol) as Doctor Nina Jekyll. Tom Holland-fronted short film “Last Call” is set to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival, Variety can exclusively confirm.
The short is directed by his younger brother Harry Holland and also features Lindsay Duncan (“Birdman”).
“Last Call” tells the story of Kate, a desperate mother who is trying to reconnect with her son.
“Navigating an obvious void, Kate will finally have the chance to ask the questions that have haunted her past, and will decide her future,” reads the logline.
The film is in part an exploration of mental health and Harry Holland did extensive research, consulting with charities and individuals, as part of the project. It was co-written by Will South and produced by Marie-Elena Dyche (“The Blind”).
“I wanted to make a movie to prompt a conversation on our mental frailties, which are ever more exposed by this modern world,” said Harry Holland.

Exclusive: Jorge Vargas (‘Snowpiercer’), Tanaya Beatty (‘Yellowstone,’), and Skywalker Hughes (‘Joe Pickett’) are rounding out the previously announced cast of Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton’s In The Blink of an Eye starring Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, and Daveed Diggs. Principal photography has now commenced in British Columbia.
The movie follows three storylines, spanning thousands of years, intersect and reflect on hope, connection and the circle of life. Jared Ian Goldman (Ingrid Goes West, ‘Russian Doll’) produces the pic written and executive produced by Colby Day (Spaceman).
“From the first read I knew Colby Day’s script was special,” said Stanton, “and it has only become more rarified of a project as our team has formed. What a privilege to have such an ideal cast and crew realize this beautiful story.”
“Andrew is a visionary artist whose unique gifts as a storyteller shine in this beautiful film,” added Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum.

It hasn’t been easy for Fox Searchlight Pictures over the last several years. The studio’s reputation has struggled in the wake of box office disappointments like “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “Demolition,” “Table 19,” and this year’s “Patti Cake$,” plus increased competition from growing rivals like Netflix, Amazon, and A24. What was once a studio destined to be an Oscar power player has now become just another indie distributor fighting to get its movies seen. We’re a long way from the back-to-back Best Picture success of “12 Years a Slave” and “Birdman,” plus Oscar favorites like “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” and “The Descendants.”

The Telluride Film Festival is about a lot more than Oscars. Co-directors Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger certainly set out to program the year’s likeliest Oscar contenders, including Joe Wright’s Gary Oldman vehicle “Darkest Hour,” Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” starring Saoirse Ronan, Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” starring Sally Hawkins, and “Battle of the Sexes,” starring a luminous Emma Stone as real-life hero Billie Jean King.
But Telluride was also a crucible for conversations about the state of the motion picture industry throughout the weekend, as Netflix and Amazon threw parties and checked out several high-profile movies without distribution — including Francis Ford Coppola’s musically-enhanced “The Cotton Club Encore” — that banked on the festival boosting their critical and audience cred before top buyers.
