- Was a Presbyterian Minister in Highland Falls, NY, when in October of 1871 he was inspired to travel to Chicago upon hearing of the devastating fire that destroyed much of the city.
- In 1862, during the American Civil War, he became chaplain to the Second New York Harris Light Cavalry. Two years later Roe transferred to Hampton, Virginia to minister the wounded and sick soldiers at the Union hospital there.
- American clergyman and author. Remembered for his book about the Great Chicago Fire, "Barriers Burned Away" (1872).
