It was 20 years ago today.
No, it’s nothing about “Sgt. Pepper”, but rather two decades exactly since Lucas, A.J, Cory and the gang banded together to save Empire Records.
For those unfamiliar, “The Empire” was one of the last great vestiges of independent music ownership and the scene of one of the great cult classics of the 1990s. The unfamiliar can be excused, however, since the film was, by and large, a failure. It grossed just over $300,000 in the States and was gone from theatres just two weeks after its late 1995 release. So, why the fuss?
It gained popularity with a certain age group – pretty much anyone currently in their 30s – thanks to early performances from some would be stars (Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger most notably) and its all-timer of a soundtrack.
But why celebrate 20 years of the cult classic in April instead of on its Sept.

With practically every month now marking the 20th anniversary of yet another “classic” alternative era album -- "In Utero" is next up to bat -- '90s nostalgia is, shall we say, in bloom.
But not every band from back then were iconic rule breakers a la Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins or Blur. And the decade’s lesser lights are now rearing their frosted-tipped heads for one more kick at the can, too.
This summer the Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox 20 hit the road as part of a joint summer tour. So has Under the Sun, a summer-long, alt-rock lite package tour featuring Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon and Fastball (the lineup is a holdover from the failed Mark McGrath and Friends Cruise). These bands, radio and sales heavies from the mid-to late-’90s, join a wave of acts like Soundgarden, Blink-182, The Breeders and No Doubt...

It's been more than a decade since the 1990s ended, yet the Internet can't seem to go a day without a reminder of the neon slap bracelets that may have been banned from your school.
Yes, we get it. Times are tough and there's comfort in reflection, but enough is enough.

In a world where movie tickets and a babysitter's hourly rates are more than $10, it's understandable that many parents don't get out to the movies very often. But after a summer full of animated racing garden snails, manic yellow minions, and fraternity-brother monsters, it's only fair that you see at least one movie this summer that is neither animated nor intended for family audiences.
Once again, we're here to help. In this installment, we've compiled a list of three critically acclaimed grown-up movies by debut directors. One makes you think about race in America, and two are vastly different summer coming-of age stories, but all three are worth seeing sans kids.
Go on then, pick a movie, get the sitter, and treat yourself to a night at the movies.

For those of us who came of age in the '90s it has not been uncommon to notice a certain nostalgia creeping up on you these last few years. At first maybe you were happy to revisit some old songs or movies you hadn't heard/seen in a while but before you knew it, pop culture artefacts you didn't particularly even care for at the time seemed to bring back fond memories of a decade that now seems oh so far away (Gin Blossoms were actually a pretty good band, you guys). The new sex comedy "The To Do List," is set distinctively in the summer of 1993 and is one of the first films to transport us back to the pre-internet age of Coolio and "Clueless." If it seems too soon to start thinking about the '90s as a period piece, consider this: "Dazed and Confused" was set...

San Diego - "The To-Do List" linked up with HitFix for a party at Comic-Con this year, but before we could put our party pants on, the film's stars Aubrey Plaza and Alia Shawkat and I needed to hack our way through the 1990s. The flick centers on Plaza's enterprising high-schooler Brandy Klark, whose sexual experiences become goals on a to-do list in much the same way she'd study for a test. Shawkat plays one of her best friends Fiona, and they are featured in all manner of 1993: from Caboodles to Gin Blossoms and -- God help us -- overalls...

As if mounting (ha ha) a movie about one young woman's goal to knock every sexual act off of her bucket list before college isn't ambitious enough, the decision to set it in the '90s is also pretty bold. If you don't do it right, it can come off as cheap or misguided, but the filmmakers behind "The To Do List" have made sure the soundtrack reflects the times, for better or worse.... And so, the 12-strong soundtrack for the upcoming comedy mixes in (mostly dated/one hit wonder) hip hop from 2 Live Crew, Mc Hammer and Naughty By Nature (though "O.P.P." still rules), some alt-fm staples from James, Gin Blossoms, Elastica, Cranberries and Mazzy Star, and a few odd outliers like House Of Love and Big Head Todd & The Monsters. And course, Salt N Pepa's "Let Talks About Sex" is here because it has to be.

This following article is the result of a text from a concerned friend, who, one month ago, informed me that my Spotify account had been simultaneously streaming on Facebook for a significant period of time. I did not know this. It wasn't pretty, my buddy said. He had watched me spend whole days replaying the Dave Matthews Band's live album "Live at Red Rocks." He had seen me listen to the incredibly average Sugar Ray song "Personal Space Invader" three times in a row. Hootie and the Blowfish represented the best of any band I'd been playing. I went back through my top-played list and saw the Gin Blossoms, Fastball and a lot more Sugar Ray songs topping anything that had been released in the last decade. I once was a guy who prided himself on not being afraid to explore new genres and artists.

What's with today, today? Monday, April 8, is Rex Manning Day, a holiday created to commemorate the film "Empire Records."
The one-crazy-day comedy -- which focuses on a ragtag group of record store employees, the tyranny of chain stores and the power of Gin Blossoms and The Flying Lizards -- was released in October of 1995, making this the 17th Rex Manning Day in recorded history. But we mustn't dwell on numbers like that. No, not today. Not on Rex Manning Day.
To celebrate this year's Rex Manning Day, HuffPost Entertainment has decided to shock you (shock you, shock you) with some deviant behavior: an imagined 2013 version of "Empire Records," featuring some of today's brightest stars. We'll say no more, mon amour, and get to the fake casting:
Shailene Woodley as the Corey Mason (originally played by Liv Tyler)

If you grew up during the 1990’s, there is no doubt that you have heard a Gin Blossoms song. The rock band from Tempe, Arizona was formed in 1987 and made a huge splash with their four time platinum 1992 album, New Miserable Experience. With chart topping hits such as “Hey Jealousy” and “Follow You Down”, the Gin Blossoms became one of the quintessential bands of the 90’s: they released one more album, 1996’s Congratulations I’m Sorry before breaking up in 1997. Five years later, the band reunited in 2002 and released two more albums in 2006 and 2010.
I personally rediscovered them after attending the Summerland 2012 Tour over the past summer. The tour featured other prominent 90’s artists such as Everclear, Sugar Ray, Lit, and Marcy’s Playground. It should have been named the nostalgia tour as it featured some of the biggest hits of the decade including “My Own Worst Enemy...

Sopranos creator Chase stumbles with 60s coming-of-age rock-n-roll tale
Trading off coming-of-age clichés with band-on-the-rise clichés, ‘Sopranos’ creator David Chase’s 60s-set Not Fade Away follows kids in suburban New Jersey trying to make it big in rock-and-roll. Protagonist Douglas may have Dino Valente’s haircut, but he’s no Dino Valente: The band’s lone original single sounds like a second-tier Gin Blossoms song. Maybe you’ll dig it, but it doesn’t particularly sound authentic to the period. Curated by music producer Steven Van Zandt, a lot of money was thrown at the soundtrack of classic rock staples (Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, etc.), but a deficit of thought was supplied to creating multi-dimensional characters, or to devising a cinematic concept distinguishable from rote cable TV. David Chase was falsely credited with bringing a movie sensibility to television, but the boxy, uninspired Not Fade Away is irrefutable...

This news would've broken some hearts in 1997: Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath married longtime sweetheart Carin Kingsland on Monday morning in Southern California.
"After 18 years of breakups, makeups, beautiful twins and an unwavering love that provided some pretty damn good song lyrics, we are happy to announce that we are finally married!" McGrath tells People.com.
The website also reports the couple's 2-year-old twins Lydon and Hartley were the ceremony's ring bearer and flower girl, respectively. About 60 friends and family members were in attendance. McGrath proposed to Kingsland back in 2009 at L.A.'s the Viper Room, the site of their first meeting in 1994.
Sugar Ray remains best known for their late '90s hits "Fly," "Every Morning" and "Someday." Their most recent album, "Music for Cougars," was released in 2009 and they recently completed a U.S. tour with fellow nostalgia acts Everclear, Lit, Gin Blossoms and Marcy Playground.

Now that their comeback has been officially sanctioned by Mother Monster herself, No Doubt should not have a problem reclaiming the top of the charts.

To refresh your memory, it’s been almost 11 years since the band released their last studio album, Rock Steady, and in the time since, they've released a greatest hits album, lead singer Gwen Stefani was sweetly inescapable as she embarked on a massively successful solo career and bassist Tony Kanal produced hits for artists including Pink, Shontelle and even Gwen. Though Gillian Anderson is best known for her role as Dana Scully on The X-Files, the actress is also a classically trained thespian who has used her talents in such varied fare as the Bleak House mini-series, the Royal-focused series Any Human Heart, and at least two television takes on classic material – Moby Dick and Great Expectations. What we’re saying is, she’s not just Scully, but damn if Anderson doesn’t know her way around some good sci-fi, so it’s heartening news that she’s joined a very intriguing new project with just that kind of bent. Deadline Quantico reports that Anderson has joined Haley Joel Osment, Rufus Sewell, and Victor Garber in Richie Mehta‘s (Amal) new film, I’ll Follow You Down. While we don’t yet know too much about the film (and with its mysterious logline, it’s likely to stay that way), we do know that it centers on...

In their hit song, “Hey Jealousy,” the Gin Blossoms suggest that if “you don’t expect too much from me, you might not get let down.” I admit I approached What to Expect When Your Expecting with that attitude and was pleasantly surprised. A departure from the brainless star-studded ensemble of recent Garry Marshall (Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve), this is not exactly cinematically nutritious but a pleasant-enough cupcake.

Do not be alarmed. You have not been transported through a wormhole back to 1999... but it might feel like it. April 2012 is looking an awful lot like the 1990s. Whether you're at the movies, watching TV, or picking out your clothes, there's a definite resurgence of '90s nostalgia. For those of us who still remember the '90s like it was yesterday, it's a little weird that it's also, well, today.
First of all, there's the fact that James Van Der Beek is back on television. "Don't Trust The B---- in Apartment 23" premieres this Wednesday, April 11. In the ABC comedy, Van Der Beek plays a fictional version of himself -- a version that wears "Dawson's Creek" flannel and blasts Paula Cole's "I Don't Want To Wait" in order to seduce women.

If there are any filmmakers who’ve worked their way through record stores as much as folks like Quentin Tarantino or even Wes Anderson, it would have to be John Hughes and Allan Moyle. So perhaps it’s no real surprise that on annual Record Store Day, where you can come out and support your local independent record stores on April 21st this year, there will be soundtrack reissues from both filmmakers.
First is Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” which will surely find many record enthusiasts doing some Judd Hirsch-style fist pumping as they pick up their all-white 12-inch vinyl pressing of the album. It’s hard to capture an entire mood of a film with a single soundtrack, especially when that film lingers on a dreary Saturday spent in detention with a few high school students looking to find themselves like in “The Breakfast Club,” but between the seminal...

It's Ok to like 'The Artist.' Really. Chances are, you haven't even seen 'The Artist' yet, but the general consensus from the Oscar cognoscenti (recently promoted from Colonel Consensus) has turned sour on the film. At first, General Consensus hailed 'The Artist' as the bees' knees. "Hooray, 'The Artist,' you're so different. We like you!" But, alas, General Consensus is a finicky fellow. Because, as of late -- even though it's still the favorite to take home an Oscar for Best Picture -- admitting that you like 'The Artist' will get you about the same reaction as admitting that you think the Gin Blossoms' 'New Miserable Experience' is one of the best albums of the early '90s. Yes, 'The Artist' has a lot more in common with the Gin Blossoms than you might think.

Sugar Ray and Lifehouse have been forced to cancel a Connecticut concert in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. The groups were to join Gin Blossoms as headliners for the Town of Trumbull Concert Series at Indian Ledge Park on September 10, but the venue sustained heavy damage in last weekend's storm. The gig's organizers apologized for the cancellation, but explained that the damage to Indian Ledge Park was too severe to be repaired in the next few weeks. A Town of Trumbull Concert Series rep said in a statement: "We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this (more)...

There is a musical category we felt somehow got lost between all the Britney Spears’, Christina Aguileras and Backstreet Boys of the 90s. We know these artists have all resurfaced in the 21st Century, but we are emphasizing the late 90s because that is when ethereal pop-indie got caged away. We made up our own genre, but we can stereotype the tunes of the Gin Blossoms, Nathalie Imbruglia, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Cranberries and The Shins, as having all three elements, pop and indie with a toast of fancifulness. These epic 90s tunes are not lost in the history of music, but their defined genre can no longer prevail...

Think what you will about the alternative rock revolution of the 1990s, but you can't deny that it made mainstream pop and rock slightly more interesting. A mainstream radio band — the old versions of something like Maroon 5 or the Fray — could look a little bit shaggy and sound a little bit dirty. It split the difference nicely, and while bands like Gin Blossoms are often remembered as mild diversions, they actually sounded way more rocking than anybody remembers.
For the sake of shortcuts, let's call it "Friends" rock, as just about all the bands who fall into that category (including Hootie and the Blowfish, the Rembrandts, Barenaked Ladies and the like) appeared on the soundtrack to "Friends" (and would have been enjoyed by fans of the long-running sitcom). Toad the Wet Sprocket also falls into that category, and though the California quartet (who recently reunited for a full-time return...

I love the girls of The Hairpin, and I hope to one day make out with each and every one of them. Fortunately for creeps like me, Vulture alumnae Edith Zimmerman has posted onto Hairpin The Worst Mixtape Ever, which means that I'll know exactly what not to play when I want to set the mood at those New York media parties to which I'm not invited enough (cough). So what bands are on the World's Worst Mixtape? Pretty much the ones you might expect, from Staind to Color Me Badd to Terry Gross Interviews Stephen Colbert (in fact, if you habitually make out to shuffle mode, it'd be prudent to go ahead and uncheck all the podcasts in your iTunes library). My only bone of contention is the inclusion of Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy," a delightful song that, for some, is a [...]...

Somewhere, probably on a beach, country sand bum Kenny Chesney is likely celebrating the #1 debut of his latest album, Hemingway's Whiskey, which will top the Billboard 200 chart next week thanks to sales of 183,000. He easily beat out the week's other top debut, the digital release of incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne's I Am Not a Human Being album, which sold 110,000 copies, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The physical release of Weezy's album, with bonus tracks, is due on October 12.
The pair lead a stampede of new faces on the charts this week, which also include Gucci Mane at #4 with Georgia's Most Wanted (60,000) and guitar legend Eric Clapton at #6 with Clapton (47,000).
The rest of the top 10: Zac Brown Band, You Get What You Give (#3, 70,000), Eminem,...

A Conversation with Gin Blossoms' Robin Wilson Mike Ragogna: Hi Robin. We're recording this interview using solar power, something you probably know about being from Tempe, Arizona. Robin Wilson: Well, I believe right around the corner from my studio is the most advanced experimental solar array on the planet. Mr: Wow, go into that. Rw: Well, I think it also causes like airborne magnetic fields and s**t that ends up screwing up the recording of guitars in my studio intermittently. Mr: (laughs) Uh-oh. Perhaps we should move on... Rw: Yeah, that combined with the brewery next door makes it so I sometimes have problems at my studio recording guitars. It's completely impossible to predict, but I think it has something to do with that damn solar array that's like three hundred yards away. Mr: (laughs) Damn you solar power! Well, you know, every once in a...

Here's a fact that might not be shocking to close observers of the MTV Newsroom Blog: I have something of a fixation with the music of the 1990s. And I have a particular obsession with the soundtracks of that era, partially because I think the movies are interesting and partially because those soundtracks usually act as delightful little time capsules that express exactly where the zeitgeist was at the time (down to the month, usually). Plus, music was all over the place then, so the beginnings of nu-metal lived next to hippie dippie rock, post-grunge, post-riot grrrl, industrial, dance music and most everything in between (this was especially true of the late '90s — pre-millennium tension did strange things to people.
With that in mind, I got really excited when I came across Buzzfeed's list of the top 13 '90s soundtracks posted today. They touched on many of the best,...

I listened to a lot of embarrassing music back in 1995: Toad the Wet Sprocket, Gin Blossoms, The Cranberries, Sponge, The Lemonheads, and basically half of what's on the Empire Records soundtrack. Empire Records is a fairly good representation of the popular, watered-down, R.E.M.-wannabe alt music of the era. Like the music, Empire Records was crap then, and it's crap now, but nostalgia has had a funny way of shining down on it. It's all very affectionately shameful. It's pure cheese, but it's aged well, like a nice gruyere -- sweet, but not overpowering. And great for fondue!
It's also a very unexpected cult classic among a certain age group. It only made $303,000 in its theatrical release, and reviews for the film were largely negative (it still possesses only a 24 percent over on RottenTomatoes). It's unexpected because there was nothing particularly original, ahead of its time, or inventive about Empire Records.

Tila Tequila is going to be appearing on the next season of Celebrity Rehab for allegedly having an addition to snorting Ambien. And by "Ambien" she means "cocaine" and I'd be willing to bet there's some vodka-soaked tampons thrown into the mix too. (Yeeeah!)
One person not appearing on "Celebrity Rehab" will be David Hasselhoff, who recently almost drank himself to death again. Jesus. How does that dude even have any liver left? (Warming Glow)
Sex and the City 2 might have some blatant anti-Muslim themes, although if you ask me Muslims aren't the only ones who take umbrage with four dried-up old scantily-clad whores. (Film Drunk)
Now that Season Four of "30 Rock" has drawn to a close, here is another installment of Aaron Cohen's inspired "Everything Tracy Jordan Said on Season X of 30 Rock." (Unlikely Words)

By the summer of 1992, grunge was already beginning to establish it's stranglehold on rock radio. Nirvana had peaked, Pearl Jam was cruising and the first wave of bandwagoneers (like Stone Temple Pilots) were already making waves. The effect was also being felt elsewhere on the radio, as people scrambled to sign bands who sounded even vaguely fuzzy in order to give them credibility. The point is this: Without grunge, it's unclear whether or not Gin Blossoms would have ever made it onto the radio.
But they did, and on this day in 1992, the band released the breakout album New Miserable Experience. It came armed with a controversial story: Gin Blossoms guitarist and main songwriter Doug Hopkins was fired just before the release of the record because of his alcohol problems (he later committed suicide right as his former band was becoming gigantic). The album, full of driving jangle pop with...

Taken from Pete Yorn's latest album Back & Fourth, a live video performance of the single "Last Summer" premieres on The Huffington Post, its melody rocking somewhere between The Byrds and Gin Blossoms. Over the course of the album, Conor Oberst's Omaha musical crew helped reinvent and re-energize Yorn, successfully dissolving the artist's unnecessary rock star veneer; the same goes for the video, it employing that "unplugged," low-fi approach to Yorn simply strummin' the heck out of his Gibson Dove, accompanied visually and musically by only his band. In the song, the artist laments, "We were there last summer, it was fresh as the ocean, we were great last summer...we cannot go back again." Not true, all's well this summer too since the studio version of "Last Summer" is Back & Fourth's best shot at a solid hit, one you...

I once read an interesting quote by La Times music writer August Brown. He wondered if “the music you fall for between 18 and 22 is hard-wired to be the only music you really love in that insane, possessive, identity-crafting way for the rest of your life.” I pondered on this thought for some time, for it’s very true that the music I loved in that hectic four year period of my life is music that is no doubt very near and dear to me. That time period has actually only passed rather recently for me though, and I wonder if the music of that bittersweet era will continue to grow and become even more treasured to me in the years ahead. I think it’s likely, but at the moment the music that I hold in the highest realms of nostalgic mystique is the music that I grew up with,...
