On November 20th, Katniss Everdeen will reintroduce herself to moviegoers with the release of Mockingjay - Part 1, the latest film in the Hunger Games franchise. And the marketing efforts for the flick are catching fire.
The Hunger Games is almost as big on YouTube as it is at the box office, and film distributor Lionsgate is taking advantage of that appeal by striking a partnership with Google. The studio worked with Google's Art, Copy & Code and the team at YouTube Space La to develop District Voices, a five-part video series set in the world of Panem.
Each video in the District Voices series was filmed at YouTube Space La, and will be distributed through Capitol TV, a web video platform and "the government-sanctioned television network of The Hunger Games." The videos profile various elements of the Hunger Games world, and each one feature YouTube content creators in starring roles.

Film Society NYC's annual Asian Film Festival starts at the end of the month and will pay tribute to Jimmy Wong Yu (Taiwanese director), Lee Jung-jae (Korean actor), and Sandra Ng (Hong Kong actress) among others. Lots of interesting sounding films as usual

More news on the Foreign-Language Oscar entry front. France has selected "Renoir," directed by Gilles Bourdos, for the race, while Taiwan has nominated psychological horror-thriller "Soul," helmed by Chung Mung-hong. "Renoir," which played in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section in 2012, centers on the life of painter Auguste Renoir (played by Michel Bouquet) during World War I on the French Riviera, and his young son, Jean, who would grow up to be renowned filmmaker Jean Renoir ("The Rules of the Game"). The film hit theaters stateside back in the spring. (French production "Blue Is the Warmest Color," which won this year's Palme d'Or, didn't meet the release date criteria to be eligible as France's official Oscar selection.) "Soul" centers on a sous chef (played by Joseph Chang) who is moved to his home town and into the care of his father (martial arts veteran Jimmy Wong) when he becomes ill. When...

I thought it was about time i did a post on the great vampire buster of all time, yes you got it, lam Ching Ying. This will be listing all the movies and tv series where Lam Ching Ying either stars in or takes on the hopping vampires and evil spirits.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
Other great movies which he starred in (But not in a vampire movie) were the likes of The Prodigal Son, School On Fire, Eastern Condors, The Magnificent Butcher and Painted Faces.
I have been a big fan of these movies since i first watched Mr.

As YouTube networks solidify and creators begin making actual paychecks, it’s easy to forget about the passion filled collaborative days of YouTube’s yesteryear that helped to build some of the site’s biggest fan bases. YouTubers working with YouTubers was a powerful tool that not only grew audiences, but gave content creators an opportunity to have fun working with fellow talent. Yes, collabs certainly still happen, but it feels like they’re happening less so between individuals represented by different YouTube networks. Thankfully, though, we have a show like The Stooges to further remind us people are still working together and it doesn’t always have to be all about the Benjamin’s (not that there’s anything wrong if it is). Shot on a modest budget bumping $10K, the series features YouTube stars Eric Pumphrey of Reckless Tortuga and Rawn Erickson (HiimRawn) of Maker Studios, as well as Luke Edwards,...

Two-thousand-double-one came in with the roar of Tiger Mommy and the tragic devastation of Japan’s tsunami. As it continued, the NBA waved farewell to Yao Ming, Gary Locke took a plane to Beijing — and Asians in the library made their cell phones ring. As 2012 begins, here are Tao Jones’s picks for the best, the worst and the most memorable events, individuals and phenomena of the year that was.

Last year it was a bird in a bird in a bird in a bird in a bird in a pig. More specifically, it was a quail, in a Cornish hen, in a chicken, in a duck, in a turkey, in a pig, all layered, deboned, held together with veal and pork sausage meat, filled with bacon stuffing, lathered in a Jack Daniels glaze, and covered in candied bacon strips. It was baked, then smoked, then garnished with Wendy’s Baconators, then eaten. This year it’s the same thing. Except times 10. Harley Morenstein, Sterling Toth, Muscles Glasses and the rest of the Canadian crew of gonzo food pornorgraphers otherwise known as Epic Meal Time have grossly expanded on their Turbacon creation of 2010 and conceived of a new culinary monstrosity dubbed the Turbaconepicentipede. It’s a bunch of Turbacons lined up in a row, positioned like the characters in Tom Six...

Earlier this year there was Felicia Day appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, not to promote her recent movie (Red) or increasingly frequent TV appearances, but for her Dragon Age series. Now tonight on ABC, YouTube’s hottest action directors Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch are sitting down on the couch with Jimmy Kimmel. Folks, online video stars have arrived. For those who long ditched their TV Guides, the show airs tonight on ABC at 12Am on the east coast, 11Pm central, then again at 12Am on the west coast. Broadway and Glee guest star Kristin Chenoweth joins them on the show tonight. So tune in web video fans, this is a big deal. Zach King knows a thing or two about Final Cut, and thankfully he’s sharing the knowledge. People are starting to take notice of his gripping edit sequences and penchant for fast-paced VFX shots. His YouTube channel Final Cut King, once a witty blend of his last name with an amusing brand name to sell video courses and workshops on editing, is now a rising star in the innovative filmmaking circles within the world’s biggest video network. With 5.7 million total views and 37,700 subscribers, Final Cut King is on the verge of a breakout. His latest pop came in early May when King was tapped as one of the 25 winners of YouTube’s NextUp program—its first—which set the rising creator up with $35,000 and a trip out to New York City for the four-day creators camp. This week saw the release of his first collaboration project out of the NextUp program,...

YouTube announced the winners of its NextUp Creators Contest early last month. A cross-section of 25 Youtubers - ranging in age from 18 to what 18-year-olds consider old (I think that means 40-something), areas of expertise from sewing gurus to Final Cut pros, and subscriber counts from 300 to just shy of 300,000 - won $35,000 each and an-all-expenses paid, week-long, online video bootcamp at the YouTube HQ in New York City. The NextUp Class of 2011 started its education on Sunday and will graduate on Friday after attending and participating in lectures, seminars, and study groups from some of the biggest names in the online video and YouTube business (including Gary Vaynerchuk, The Fine Bros., Tony Valenzuela, and more). Class starts at 8Am sharp every day and lasts until 2Pm, at which time the students break to collaboratively work on creating new videos. Last night, the NextUp Creators took time off from their regularly scheduled...

One of the highlights of my trip here in Cannes was walking aboard a million dollar yacht and interviewing martial arts icon Donnie Yen along with filmmaker Peter Chan, who directed Donnie in his latest film Wu Xia, or Swordsmen (our review here). Based on the classic wu xia style of films, a genre of Chinese fiction focusing on adventures of martial artists, made extremely popular by the prolific Shaw Brothers studio, the film is a perfect example of the unique and exciting cinema that could only come from China. Both Donnie and Peter were very gracious in explaining the challenges they faced in making this film, along with what makes their Wu Xia stand out above the rest.
The Film Stage: What inspired you to make this classic style of Wu Xia film?
Peter Chan: We actually tried to return to the old glory of the 1960’s and...

It turns out that Alexandra Wallace’s anti-Asian rant may create another new Internet star. Jimmy Wong, a 24-year-old Los Angeles musician, wrote a charming song in response to Wallace’s controversial (or: insulting, clueless and simultaneously somehow hilarious) rant against Asian students at the UCLA library. He strums and sings: “Baby I want to take you out and blow your freakin’ mind/ Ching chong means I love you/ Ling long I really want you/ Ting Tong I don’t actually know what that means” Read also: Alexandra Wallace, Rebecca Black and the Siren Song of Internet Fame Wong’s...
