Statements Kylin Pictures CFO Leo Shi Young made about his company's rivalry with Bliss Media aren't grounds for a defamation claim, according to a California judge.
Bliss and its CEO Wei Han sued in January, claiming Young defamed her and her company by describing Bliss as a "shell company" and Han as a "swindler." Attorneys for Kylin Pictures, Michael Weinsten and Andrew Brettler, asked the court to toss the suit, arguing that the statements were made in a public forum, concerning a matter of public interest and are clearly protected speech.

The Campaign Begins: Inside the First Weekend Push to Woo Academy Voters with Food, Swag, and Celebs
Truth is, while there are about 6,000 voting Academy members, it can take only 300 or so Oscar votes to get a movie nominated. Hence all the relentless campaigning, which is in full gear, as distributors, foreign countries, and Oscar-whisperers plan and execute relentless rounds of screenings with public appearances — at lunches, Q&A panels, premieres, DVD launch parties, and “holiday” fetes.
Check out this slice of the past few days to get a sense of all the wining and dining that goes on. Academy members are being constantly wooed, just like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who vote on the Golden Globes, with yummy food, drink, music, and celebrities —despite various attempts by the Academy to monitor and limit the scale of all this campaigning.

Indiewire is pleased to present the official U.S. trailer for Terry Green's "No God, No Master." Starring Oscar-nominee David Strathairn ("Good Night, and Good Luck"), the film is opening this month courtesy of Monterey Media. Synopsis:When a series of package bombs show up on the doorsteps of prominent politicians and businessmen in the summer of 1919, U.S. Bureau of Investigation Agent William Flynn (Strathairn) is assigned the task of finding those responsible. He becomes immersed in an investigation that uncovers an anarchist plot to destroy democracy. Based on true events of the 20s the film sets the stage for a timely drama with resoundingly similar parallels to the contemporary war on terrorism and the role government plays to defeat it. There are interesting parallels between the plot and thematic material of the film, and the post-terrorism world we live in today. The uproar from the package bombs displayed...

The new No God, No Master focuses on New York City as a terrorist explosion claims the lives of innocents and holds its citizens in the grip of fear, not a dozen years ago, but all the way back in 1920. Good Night, And Good Luck star David Straithairn plays federal investigator William Flynn who teams up with fellow agent Ravarini (Sam Witwer) to locate the sender of packages of homemade bombs addressed to prominent citizens. The search takes them into the shadowy world of the anarchist movement, which included several followers that advocated violence toward the high class “robber barons”. Flynn’s search leads him to question several historical figures including millionaire industrialist John D.Rockefeller and social activist Emma Goldman. But Flynn also must contend with his politically ambitious boss A. Mitchell Palmer (“Twin Peaks” star Ray Wise) who, with young, zealous bureau rising star J. Edgar Hoover, illegally...

Tornadoes tore once again through the central U.S. on Tuesday night, killing 14 people in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas. Five of the deaths took place near Oklahoma City, where a weather-monitoring station recorded 151-mile-per-hour winds. The storm also blew through Joplin, Missouri, where residents, still digging out from Sunday's record twister that killed at least 124, had to take cover.

The Republican governor's startling vetoes of "birther" and gun bills backed by the Tea Party have not upset her conservative base, and Democrats say it's all part of a plan to appease extremist voters. Terry Greene Sterling reports.
A year ago, incumbent Republican Gov. Jan Brewer was trailing her Democratic rival Terry Goddard in the Arizona gubernatorial race. Then Brewer signed Sb 1070, the state's notorious immigration law, and further pandered to her Republican Tea Party base by touting her proud membership in the NRA, labeling unauthorized migrants drug mules, and scaring the daylights out of Arizonans with false tales of "beheadings" in the desert. Despite an agonizingly embarrassing senior moment in televised pre-election debates, Brewer rode a wave of conservative sentiment into the governor's office, and achieved iconic status among her supporters.

Shawna Forde, the anti-immigrant zealot convicted of killing a 9-year-old girl and her father, was sentenced to death by a Tucson jury today. Terry Greene Sterling on Forde's abusive past-and the wingnuts who call her a martyr.

Shawna Forde faces the death penalty as closing arguments begin in one of the strangest trials in Arizona history. Terry Greene Sterling on the accused's surprising endgame.
For Shawna Forde, a 43-year-old beautician-turned-border vigilante, the moment of truth is at hand. For months, Forde, a Minuteman charged with masterminding a 2009 home invasion in which 9-year-old Brisenia Flores and her dad, Raul, were slaughtered on the Arizona border, has maintained her innocence and pushed her lawyers to let her testify on her own behalf. It is the ultimate legal gamble. If Forde, who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, and several home-invasion-related crimes, is convicted, she could get the death penalty.
