The films in the running for the 2023 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our odds currently indicate that “Avatar: The Way of Water” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Top Gun: Maverick” (39/10), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (9/2), “The Batman” (9/2), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (9/2).

The Batman The Batman
The aim of Matt Reeves’ The Batman was to make it feel as if the action could really happen. “There’s no science fiction element or fantastic element that removes it from our reality,” production VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon says, explaining that required doing as much in camera as possible. Special FX supervisor Dominic Tuohy and his team even built four versions of the Batmobile for different uses. Lemmon says that in the ramp jump (pictured right), which occurs as Batman chases the Penguin, his team used a stripped-down vehicle with additional features. “Eventually they were able to dial it in so the car could get up to about 12 feet high,” he claims, adding: “It soared for nearly a hundred feet before it would hit the ground again. And they were able to drive it through a wall of fire at the same time.”

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which were announced on December 21, 2022. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 24. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” breakout star Stephanie Hsu learned that she’d earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination on Tuesday just after her flight landed in Los Angeles. And the first text message of congratulations to reach her was short and to the point: “Holy s—.”
“I knew that the announcements were happening today and I was flying back from Sydney. I woke up just before it was happening. And then I put my phone on the little tray next to my coffee and it just started going zoing zoing!” Hsu said with a laugh. “I got the news sort of right as I was landing, so I thought I was hallucinating.”
Hsu was just one of many nominees from “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” as the film topped all other entries with 11 overall nominations, including acting nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.

In the season of the spectacle, the Oscar craft nominations were pretty evenly split, led by “Elvis” and the late-surging “All Quiet on the Western Front” with six. Next in line with four nominations were “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Topping out at three nominations each were “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” and “The Batman.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” and “TÁR” were nominated for two craft awards apiece. And “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” and “Empire of Light” scored lone cinematography nominations for Darius Khondji (his second) and Roger Deakins (his 16th).
This was definitely the result of an unusually competitive field containing three sequels, a DC reboot (“The Batman”), a World War I actioner (“All Quiet”), a multiverse adventure (“Everything Everywhere”), an epic Hollywood comedy-drama (“Babylon”), and a musical biopic extravaganza (“Elvis”). So competitive, in fact,...

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett made superhero cinema history on Tuesday as the first woman, the first person of color and the first Marvel Studios actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for their performance in a comic book adaptation. It’s Bassett’s second Oscar nomination; her first came 29 years ago for best actress for 1993’s Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”
But while Bassett’s nomination breaks several Oscar barriers, “Wakanda Forever” failed to equal the best picture nod earned by 2018’s “Black Panther” — the first superhero movie ever nominated for Oscar’s top prize. The film was also nominated for Ruth E. Carter for costume design; “Lift Me Up” for original song; Camille Friend and Joel Harlow for makeup and hairstyling; and Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, Hanzhi Tang and Dan Sudick for visual effects.

You may recall that there was a flurry of news stories and online chatter last summer about the state of the visual effects industry in general and its relationship with the powerful Marvel Studios specifically. Major outlets like CNET and Vulture published detailed reports in which VFX workers—most of them speaking anonymously for obvious reasons—talked about the brutal hours and stress-inducing deadlines that the neverending flow of Marvel product engendered, with many of them admitting that they were burned out, on the verge of leaving or already departing a field that they loved.
There’s no question that a number of Marvel properties, ranging from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, have clearly suffered from distinct drops in quality visuals, a problem that has plagued many MCU titles. Almost everything about “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” feels like a leap forward from its predecessor, not just the film’s emotional impact due to the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman before production began but also its scope and scale. “Wakanda Forever” flings its many characters around the globe from Wakanda to America to Talokan, the undersea world led by new antagonist Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia). The herculean effort to bring the new locations to life took a massive team of artisans, including visual effects masters Daniel Sudick, Geoffrey Baumann and Michael Ralla.
“‘Wakanda’ had everything. I can’t think of a type of effect we didn’t do,” Sudick, the production special effects supervisor, tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview.

Director Cate Shortland (“Berlin Syndrome”) brought a grittier violence to the MCU, which impacted the visual effects involving Natasha/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and her adopted family. This included holding on shots longer, keying on the color red, and using visual motifs to make emotional connections. The best example tied the embers during the destruction of the Red Room to the fireflies at the beginning.
“The fireflies was a kind of surreal moment that we often don’t have in the big MCU films,” said Marvel VFX supervisor Geoffrey Baumann (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”). “I think [Cate’s] vision with that was trying to maintain an innocence that was part of Natasha’s character, but also merge that with the grittiness that you might find in a ‘Bourne’ or a Bond or a ‘Mission’ type of film. The collaborative process was a learning experience that went both ways.”

Consider it a spoiler for the squeamish: by the time the first act of Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow” has wrapped, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans should prepare to be walloped by the kind of gritty violence not often found in the franchise’s films and series. In short, prepare for not only broken bones, but for unflinching shots of said crushed and snapped cartilage. And that’s before one character snaps a foe’s wrist like a twig.
While Cate Shortland’s film is rated PG-13 like the majority of its franchise brethren, “Black Widow” does push the envelope when it comes to its depiction of on-screen violence and fighting sequences in new ways. As Shortland told IndieWire during a recent interview, that level of realistic — at least for an MCU title — violence was always part of her pitch for the film, an element that goes hand in hand with...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite won seven prizes at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ awards in London on Sunday, including original screenplay for Tony McNamara and Deborah Davis and production design for Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton.
So the momentum builds for all four, who have been nominated in their respective categories at the Academy Awards.
Crombie’s work on The Favourite had already been recognised as it was named best period film at the Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards in Los Angeles.
In the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film category went on to win the Oscar in production design three times: The Great Gatsby (2014), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2025) and The Shape of Water (2018), which also won best picture.

Moments ago, we saw one of the final dominos in the precursor season tumble. Yes, the 72nd British Academy Film Awards were held, with the winners staking their claim to potential Oscar glory. BAFTA has long held major sway with the Academy Awards, so what voters in the former do, members of the latter keep in mind. That should again be the case this year, though there weren’t a whole lot of surprises to be found. BAFTA voters embraced the things we expected them to, for better or worse. Now, it’s just a matter of figuring out if they’re on the money or not, which is what I’ll be doing next… BAFTA gave the most awards to The Favourite, with seven in total, including Olivia Colman in Best Actress, Rachel Weisz in Best Supporting Actress, and the duo of Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara in Best Original Screenplay.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Netflix film Roma won the Best Film at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday. Fox Searchlight’s The Favourite, which led all nominees going in with 12, won a leading seven trophies as the two films with the most Oscar nominations this year duked it out on at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Cuarón’s black-and-white Spanish-language memory play score four noms overall — Best Film, Director and Cinematography and Best Film Not in the English Language — but those categories came later in the evening.
The rest of the show was mostly The Favourite‘s playground, where the Brit-originated pic with its Brit subject matter won Outstanding British Film, acting trophies for lead Olivia Colman and co-star Rachel Wiesz, as well as Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Production Design and Make Up & Hair.

Will the highest grossing film of the year “Black Panther” score a Best Picture nomination? It’s a fair question as no Marvel film has ever even been in the conversation. And the question has produced so much turmoil the academy temporarily thought of adding a Best Popular Film category. We should look towards another popular origin story that was not your typical Oscar fare — 1977’s “Star Wars: IV A New Hope” — as our guide towards “Black Panther’s” potential Oscar nomination haul.
George Lucas’s original “Star Wars” spawned a franchise that includes seven prequels and sequels and two spinoffs to date. Luke Skywalker’s origin story maybe outside the Oscars comfort zone but that didn’t stop the film from picking up 10 nominations including Best Picture; Best Director (Lucas); Best Original Screenplay (Lucas); and Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness).

Before the game-changing Black Panther, visual effects supervisor Geoffrey Baumann had worked on a number of Marvel projects, supervising computer graphics and second unit work before earning his current title in this domain. A BAFTA nominee this year, shortlisted by AMPAs as well for Best Visual Effects, Baumann had one mandate from director Ryan Coogler, when it came to his first blockbuster: Above all else, Black Panthershould hold true to Africa.
Based on a superhero character first appearing in comics in 1966, Black Panther (or T’Challa) was a king-to-be, a rising force in the invisible and technologically advanced African kingdom of Wakanda, whose domain would be like none seen before in the McU. Between Wakanda, the Golden City at its center, and the otherworldly metal it possessed, allowing for superhuman feats of engineering, Baumann knew he had enormous challenges ahead of him, with the role he played in bringing this world to life.

While 2018 has been a stunning year for character animation and world building, powered by “Ready Player One,” “Black Panther,” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” the Oscar race for Best Visual Effects shapes up as a showdown between “First Man” and “Avengers: Infinity War” — reshaping in-camera VFX for Nasa’s trip to the moon versus Marvel’s brilliant CG Thanos.
On “Avengers: Infinity War,” Digital Domain created Thanos in parallel with Weta Digital. The success of both Thanos characters was a result of conveying every nuance of Brolin’s onset performance via Dd’s new high-res facial capture system, which captured Brolin’s facial data and then added the actor’s low-res onset performance. Through analysis and fine-tuning, the animators accurately joined Brolin with Thanos, which could yield Marvel its first VFX Oscar. The level of photo-real performance capture definitely raises the bar for a humanoid.

Overall, though, it’s been a stunning year for character animation and world building, powered by “Ready Player One,” “Black Panther,”and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” And let’s not forget the wonderful “invisible” work on “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.” However, rounding out the year are several noteworthy contenders: “Welcome to Marwen,” “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle,” “Mortal Engines,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” and “Bumblebee.”
Thanks to Thanos, “Infinity War” has become a serious contender and could bring Marvel its first VFX Oscar. He’s performed with great intensity and inner turmoil by Josh Brolin and brilliantly animated by Digital Domain and Weta Digital.

In order to bring Wakanda to life for “Black Panther,” Industrial Light & Magic’s visual effects supervisor, Craig Hammack, took a deep dive into African aesthetics and architecture. The result was a notable one for the zeitgeist-grabbing Marvel blockbuster, which pays homage to the diverse beauty of Africa’s past and present.
They started with the 500-page Wakanda bible by production designer Hannah Beachler, which provided every macro and micro detail imaginable about the fictional civilization. “It allowed us to absorb the culture of the individual tribes and translate that into the urban design of the whole city so that everyone gets their distinct districts,” said Hammack (“Tomorrowland”). And by understanding the tribes, you understand the needs of the architecture.
Real World Geography
Ilm modeled cityscapes for districts associated with four of the five tribes (River, Merchant, Mining, and Border), as well as exterior and interior shots of the palace.

Rachel Morrison is now basking in her historic, breakout moment. She earned the first Oscar nomination for a female cinematographer for the poetic beauty of “Mudbound,” and now has shot the opulent-looking “Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman as the first African-American superhero. It’s the most significant Marvel movie since “Iron Man,” and could have impact on Morrison’s Oscar run.
But, in reuniting with director Ryan Coogler (following their fruitful collaboration on “Fruitvale Station”), Morrison proved that her craft is more about versatility than gender. They’ve graced the McU with an essential political consciousness and warmth to go along with smart spy fun and requisite superhero action.
“For me, the best part was spending time again with Ryan,” Morrison said. “Our approach was to really find a way to ground it, to make it of this world even though there are elements that were [fantastical]. But, unlike other Marvel films,...

I recently saw that Mondo is planning to release a vinyl version of the score for Ryan Coogler's Creed, which got me thinking about how utterly fantastic that movie is. I was excited to see what Coogler might do with a sequel (which still might happen), but I'm even more pumped to see what he does with Black Panther, the upcoming film from Marvel Studios. The company just sent out a press release stating that production is underway, and reading the cast list for this thing has me grinning bigger and bigger with every name. This cast is so stacked, it's ridiculous. (I'm not sure if I even knew that Forest Whitaker was in this movie, but I know now.) Read the full press release below, which includes what I believe is the first official synopsis of the film:
