A Date For Mad Mary

Thornton directs a scuzzily radiant Seana Kerslake as the miserably mad Mary, wildly unpredictable and widely misunderstood, in a film that feels like the love child of Weekend and Once.

“There are two things you need for a good adventure: a treasure map, and someone dumb enough to go with you.” If you were to read that, you might just be inclined to follow the person who said it. If not, you might just miss out on one hell of a wild ride.
The Young Offenders, the debut feature from Peter Foott, is a story about never-do-wells just trying to get ahead despite being completely out of options. Essentially, this can be seen as a comical call to action for those with zero opportunities. As someone once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” And these two hooligans — or rather, young offenders — are put down every single day. They’re tired of it, they want something better, and who can blame them?

It's rare to have the words "Breath of fresh air" associated with Irish film. Not to say that the Irish film industry is a pile of junk. Far from it. But alot of the time Irish movies are steeped in misery, zombies and more misery. Peter Foott's Young Offenders is genuinely something different. In fact, the movie is so refreshing, it's genuinely one of the best Irish movies for years! Set around a massive, 440 million euro cocaine haul in 2007 in West Cork, two teenagers, Jock and Conor set off on a road trip to claim a bale of coke worth 7 million! Coupled with a bike obsessed Garda (a Cop for our american readers), a local psycho and an alcoholic farmer as well as a nail gun wielding drug dealer, this is quite the road trip. Not since Neil Jordan's Ondine has there been a better advertisement for West Cork.

Back in 2007 the Irish county of Cork was the scene of the largest seizure of cocaine in the nation's history, with more than four hundred million Euro worth of the stuff thrown overboard and washed ashore where it was recovered by police in sixty one seperate bales. This is true. It actually happened. Now, imagine, if you will, that you're a fifteen year old boy in Cork at the time. That cocaine is more than cocaine. It's freedom. There are literally bags of it just out there for the taking. And, if caught, you would still be legally classed as a young offender so the consequences are not particularly consequential. What do you do? This is the premise of Peter Foott's raucus coming of...
