Jessica Rothe is sharing an update on a third installment of Happy Death Day, and the star of the horror franchise is ready to face off with the Bayfield Babyface Killer once again.
In a new interview, while promoting her new film Boy Kills World, Rothe shared that director Chris Landon had an idea for the third film in the saga.
“I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out,” Rothe told Screen Geek. “We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed.”
She continued, “I think Tree [Gelbman] deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning.”

The end of the fifth episode of "X-Men '97" gave fans quite the shock. Not only did the peaceful haven of Genosha suddenly find itself under attack by a massive Tri-Sentinel Master Mold that massacred unknown numbers of mutants, but the beloved X-Men team member Gambit met his demise in a final act of heroism that stopped the tragedy from getting even worse. A week later, the end of the sixth episode revealed that it was recurring X-Men villain Mister Sinister who was behind the attack, having manipulated Bolivar Trask into activating the Sentinel strike. But as we learned in this week's seventh episode, "Bright Eyes," Sinister is just one part of the equation.
Throughout episode 7 of "X-Men '97," Rogue is trying to figure out who was responsible for the destruction on Genosha and the death of Gambit. She's out for vengeance, and in her pursuit, she encounters Captain America,...

Like the original X-Men: The Animated Series before it, X-Men ’97 has been a masterclass in adapting (and updating) classic comic book storylines in ways that make them feel fresh and surprising. The latest episode, “Bright Eyes,” continues this tradition.
“Bright Eyes” deals with the fallout of the destruction of Genosha, with both a beautiful eulogy that Nightcrawler delivers at Gambit’s funeral but also Rogue going, well, rogue to punish those behind Remy’s death. But the biggest reveals involve not just confirmation of Cable’s relationship to Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, but also that Magneto is still alive and being held hostage by a new villain, one with major ramifications for the rest of this animated universe…

It takes five minutes for “Motendo” segment of the latest episode of X-Men ’97 to reveal its big bad. A stomach-churning yellow creature covered in metal appears on screen and yells, “I am Mojo, your primetime psycho inter dimensional TV producer who feeds off ratings!”
That’s actually a pretty good description for Mojo, one of the strangest Marvel villains of all time. The “Motendo” segment finds Mojo kidnapping Jubilee and Roberto Da Costa (not yet taking his Sunspot moniker) and sending them into a video game. There, they battle various computerized baddies and garner praise from an audience, which in turn makes Mojo more powerful.
Unsurprisingly, the segment includes plenty of nods to the history of X-Men video games. And if you’re the type of person who got upset that the episode used a Snes portmanteau to describe a system that looked...

Love is in the air on "X-Men '97" with Rogue and ... Magneto??! Apparently, the two have a history. Now that Magneto has joined the X-Men, old feelings are surfacing.
In episode 2, "Mutant Liberation Begins," the pair share a private chat dancing around their history; Magneto tells Rogue he made a mistake by shutting Charles Xavier out (with a psychic-blocking helmet and all), saying he should've kept people who cared for him close — implicitly including Rogue too. She says she wants to keep their past buried, but at the episode's end, they meet in private again; apparently, Magneto's power can nullify Rogue's deadly touch, so she can experience intimacy with him that she can't with anyone else. A heartbroken Gambit spots Rogue exiting Magneto's office.
The third and most recent episode, "Fire Made Flesh," continued the teasing. Rogue/Magneto apparently haven't admitted the connection to their comrades,...

Before "X-Men '97" premiered on Disney+, fans of the original "X-Men: The Animated Series" did their homework of devouring every corner of the internet for possible hints of what the revival continuation could be bringing to the table. One of those hints came from the promotional tie-in release with Hasbro as part of the Marvel Legends series, which included an action figure of the villain, X-Cutioner. The figure is advertised as specifically designed to look like his character in "X-Men '97," which means we knew that he would be making an appearance at some point. In what way he would pop up in "X-Men '97" would have to wait for the series premiere, but with the first two episodes now available to stream on Disney+, we have our answer.

For as long as I've known the X-Men, Rogue has been one of my favorite members of the team. It was her white-streaked hair and charming Southern Belle accent that first caught my notice, but what makes Rogue endure is her tortured soul.
Her untamed powers, to lethally absorb the vitality, memories, and superabilities of other people, prevent her from touching anyone; her first kiss put her boyfriend in a coma. So, she keeps herself closed off, too afraid of hurting others to get close to them — even her true love Gambit/Remy LeBeau. With this intersection of superpowers and characterization, Rogue shows how not all mutant powers are blessings. Due to underserved sex education in the United States, plenty of teens (especially queer ones) can relate to Rogue's fear that intimacy will cause calamity.
Now, most "X-Men" characters have complicated histories and Rogue is no different. Writer Chris Claremont...

Christopher Landon is the reigning king of the horror-comedy, having directed time-loop chiller “Happy Death Day” (and its underrated follow-up) and “Freaky,” the only body-swapping slasher movie you’ll ever need. His latest, “We Have a Ghost” on Netflix, is his attempt at a more family-friendly hybrid.
The new movie follows a family (led by Anthony Mackie) who move into a house haunted by a schlubby specter (David Harbour). What follows is a wild bouillabaisse of different tones and genres, as it flits through being – at various points and sometimes all at once – a social media satire, a murder mystery and, somehow, a spy thriller.
In some ways, though, “We Have a Ghost” feels like the movie Landon has been working toward his entire career.
Landon has always been interested in the cheeky mixing-and-matching of styles. One of his first sold (and produced) screenplays was for “Disturbia” back in 2007.

Happy Death Day (watch it Here) and Happy Death Day 2U (watch that one Here) director Christopher Landon appears to be losing hope that Happy Death Day 3 (which would be called Happy Death Day to Us) is ever going to happen. Although he, producer Jason Blum, and franchise star Jessica Rothe all want to make one more movie in the series, distributor Universal is less enthusiastic about the idea because Happy Death Day 2U wasn’t as successful as its predecessor. And Landon believes that as we get further from the second film’s 2019 release date, the chances of Happy Death Day 3 happening get lower.
When asked if there was any progress on Happy Death Day 3, Landon told Slash Film, “No movement at all, sadly. There was a tiny moment where I really felt like I had Universal’s attention, but they forgot about me. [laughs] I think it’s a really tough one for them,...

Has any single person had a greater impact on horror this century than Jason Blum? The one-time Miramax executive struck out on his own in the 2000s when he founded Blumhouse Productions, a company where he remains the CEO. And in the ensuing years, Blum’s production label would define, and redefine again, the trends of horror movies and thrillers.
Operating on the philosophy that a horror film with a micro-budget will almost always turn a profit, Blum frequently allows directors broad freedom to make what they want within the genre, and in the process has kept multiplexes perpetually spooky. In 2009 Blumhouse helped reinvent the found footage horror aesthetic, and in the 2010s, the modern phenomenon of talent-focused horror gems began with Blumhouse’s gambles.
Working with filmmakers like James Wan, Scott Derrickson, Ethan Hawke, and Jordan Peele, Blumhouse Productions’ title card is now a promise of something different, if still eminently commercial and entertaining.

WarnerMedia laid off hundreds of workers on Monday, and one of the hardest hit divisions was DC Comics, the intellectual property foundation that much of the company’s other success was based on.
According to multiple published reports at The Hollywood Reporter, The Beat, ComicBook.com and others, Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras, Executive Editor Mark Doyle, Vice President of Global Publishing Initiatives Bobbie Chase, and Senior Story Editor Brian Cunningham were among those who lost their jobs. Doyle oversaw the successful rollout of DC’s Black Label publishing initiative, and Chase headed up DC’s extremely successful young adult graphic novel line, in case you were wondering if there was any rhyme or reason to the layoffs. Jim Lee, who until very recently held the title of publisher, will continue in his duties as Chief Creative Officer.

CW: Sexual harassment, grooming
This week saw a wave of sexual misconduct allegations against men of varying positions in the comic book industry. The first came from artist Aviva Artzy, followed up by artist and writer Kate Leth, with support from the wife of the late Darwyn Cooke, Marsha Cooke, and convention organizer Andrea Demonakos, accusing Cameron Stewart of grooming underage girls. Grooming is when an older person establishes a relationship with a usually underage one, with the intention of developing a sexual relationship in the future. As a result of this, Stewart, the one time Batgirl co-writer and Seaguy artist, was let go from a previously unannounced DC project and had a variant cover for Image’s Ice Cream Man canceled.
Later, former Dark Horse editor Brendan Wright was accused by former colleague Bekah Caden of an extended campaign of sexual harassment and stalking. Wright left Dark Horse in...

It’s been a busy 48 hours for Netflix: The streaming service has acquired the rights to Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s “Ball and Chain” superhero film, Eric Andre’s “Bad Trip” movie and “Legalize Everything” stand-up special, and reportedly acquired the Mark Wahlberg-produced “Our Man From Jersey” in a seven-figure deal.

The two actors will appear in Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” which had been set to be released on July 24, but but was pushed to July 30, 2021 due to theater closures amid the coronavirus pandemic.

I seem to be reviewing a whole lot of 80 Page Giants of late, most of which have been appearing from DC. That’s not a complaint mind you. I’m still an avid collector of the DC Dollar Comics issues from the late 1970′s and early 1980′s, so something about DC and oversized comics just feels right. Besides, there is a very good reason for this one. One of DC’s most famous characters, or franchises if you are a corporate lawyer, is celebrated his 750th issue. Not all in one continuous run of course, but in the many volumes and stop starts of recent times, Flash has crossed the exclusive line of characters with a 750 issue run. That’s something to celebrate. So how do you celebrate? You pull in writers and artists old and new. Your Geoff Johns,...

The Critters franchise is getting a significant update this year through Shudder’s Critters: A New Binge and now Syfy’s Critters Attack! The fifth feature-length film in the series, which originally ran from 1986 to 1992, is making its network premiere on Syfy this weekend after a Blu-ray and streaming launch over the summer. While not a classic by any standards, the film should still provide nostalgia for fans of the property.
Critters Attack! was shot in South Africa, doubling for small-town USA, and is separate from the generally unloved Critters: A New Binge series that ran on Shudder this year. Furthermore, Critters Attack! is only loosely tied to the original four films, acting more as a soft reboot with some winking nods to past events than a conventional sequel. The main connection to the original Critters is actor Dee Wallace, who we interviewed this summer about her role in the Syfy picture.

Flash Forward #1 moves Wally West past the controversial events of DC's Heroes in Crisis.
Heroes In Crisis was an incredible book. It told an extremely important story, delivering a critical message to an audience probably not used to hearing it. It also kind of breaks the superhero formula.
The biggest split between DC and Marvel characters has always been what the characters are best at doing. Marvel has the street level folks, the people with regular problems who also have to deal with being superheroes. DC heroes have always been the icons, the Olympian gods shining a light and showing us what we can be if we strive hard enough.
The point where they converge, though, is on legacy characters. Laura Kinney, Miles Morales, or Bucky all face their regular person problems in the Marvel Universe, but they also face problems fitting into or adjusting the...

All Drea (Tashiana Washington) wants is to get into a good college, but for now, she’s stuck making deliveries for a local sushi restaurant. One night, after her little brother Phillip (Jaeden Noel) witnesses meteors plummeting to Earth, one of her co-workers is attacked by hungry alien furballs with sharp teeth and big appetites. Yes, the rolling, ravenous critters are back, and soon Drea, Phillip, and two kids she’s babysitting (Ava Preston and Jack Fulton) are running for their lives. They’re also trying to protect an injured friendly alien they come across along the way, but every place they flee to becomes the site of a critter massacre.

“Alita: Battle Angel” is holding a slim lead ahead of “Lego Movie 2’s” second frame with an estimated four-day take of $29.1 million from 3,790 North American locations.
“Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” meanwhile, is heading for about $25 million for a domestic tally of around $66 million. The two films lead the pack for a relatively sluggish President’s Day weekend, with the top 12 films totaling significantly below last year’s revenues, which were given a massive boost from the $242 million (four-day) premiere of “Black Panther.”
Robert Rodriguez’s cyberpunk action film starring Christoph Waltz and Rosa Salazar scored $7.53 million on Friday. James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis adapted the script from Yukito Kishiro’s manga series “Gunnm,” and the Fox sci-fier holds a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Alita” marks a risk for the studio, with a costly $170 million production budget.

Happy Death Day‘s inspired slasher-version-of-Groundhog-Day premise proved a surprise hit for Blumhouse Productions back in October 2017, so it’s no surprise that a sequel has followed less than two years later. With the entire cast and director Christopher Landon back on board, the sequel finds increasingly clever ways to build on the first film without just resorting to more of the same (even if “more of the same” is the entire point of a time loop movie).
Initially, Happy Death Day 2U begins by focusing on a different character, namely science student Ryan (Phi Vu) – the roommate of heroine Tree’s (Jessica Rothe) now-boyfriend Carter (Israel Broussard) – who only had variations on a one-line cameo last time round. Here it’s Ryan who finds...

How do you make a sequel out of a film which, by design, was already repetitive? “Happy Death Day” was the best original slasher film in recent memory, and following up its “Groundhog Day meets Graduation Day” premise with another simple time loop would have been easy, and probably even fun. But returning director Christopher Landon has more ambitious ideas in “Happy Death Day 2U,” transforming the original high-concept slasher into a ambitious and witty sci-fi treatise on alternate realities and the cinematic significance of personal growth in sequels, which frequently forces protagonists to unlearn valuable lessons of the past, just so they can take the same cinematic journey over and over again.
The smart, funny “Happy Death Day” starred Jessica Rothe (“La La Land”) as a stuck-up college student who relived the same day over and over again, because at the end of it she always got killed by...

Two years ago, “Happy Death Day” was built around a stunt so gimmicky but surefire — a masked-killer horror scenario that repeats over and over again, with variations, like a slasher-film version of “Groundhog Day” — that it seemed almost remarkable no one had ever tried it before. The feisty sorority-girl heroine, named Tree, woke up in a stranger’s dorm room on the morning of her birthday and then proceeded to hurtle through a series of random encounters that led, inevitably, to her death at the hands of a psycho in a baby mask. In the movie, she was killed 11 times. Each time, though, she woke up again in that same room, ready to relive the day once more and maybe, this time, make it right.
All of which raises the question: What does a thriller that is rooted in the very structure of repetition do for an encore? More of the same?...

Back in 2017, Blumhouse and Christopher Landon’s Groudhog Day style comedy horror Happy Death Day came just at the right time to fill a void left by late 90s to early 2000s teenage slashers in the Scream and Final Destiny series vein. The film went on to delight horror fans with its inspired premise and cleverly executed plot.
In Happy Death Day 2U, Landon is back in the directing seat with a sequel which sadly leaves a lot to be desired in the originality stakes. Playing around with the same ideas as its predecessor, this new instalment remains hugely watchable even if it brings nothing new to the slasher comedy genre.
After a blissful couple of weeks spent getting to know her new boyfriend Carter (Israel Broussard), Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) unexpectedly re-enters the time loop which turned her last birthday into a living hell. This time, Tree learns that...

Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day 2U is a fascinating deviation from his 2017 Groundhog Day slasher riff that first laughed in death’s face. Landon and co-scribe Scott Lobdell distance themselves even further from hardcore horror treatments – almost entirely ditching Happy Death Day’s tepid subgenre commitment – and head into blackened Weird Science territory. Dare I say it’s more a quantum physics time paradox laugh like something from a futuristic Scooby Doo episode? Happy Death Day 2U almost outright abandons terror to design a more emotionally-driven teen comedy that just so happens to feature an early death sequence montage.
Oddly enough though – coming from someone who wasn’t overly keen on Happy Death Day – the switcheroo actually works.
Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) has a new lease on life after the events of the first film. She’s dating nice-guy Carter (Israel Broussard), has got rid of psycho killer Lori...

It’s a time-loop slasher laced with a hint of comedy. Here’s our review of Happy Death Day...
Imagine the obnoxious weatherman played by Bill Murray living the same day over and again, just as he did in the classic Groundhog Day, except Murray’s the target of a masked killer. If he wants to escape the seemingly unending loop of paranoia and death, he has to figure out who the killer is and why they’re so intent on sticking a knife in his chest.
This is, in a nutshell, the premise of Happy Death Day, where drunken, sharp-tongued college student Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) wakes up each morning, groggy from a monumental hangover, and finds herself hunted by a murderer in a grotesque baby mask. To make matters worse, there’s no shortage of suspects, from puritanical sorority housemates to the wife of a science professor she...

Chicago – “Happy Death Day” has a “Groundhog Day” gimmick, but that’s about it, offering essentially an ‘80’s style slasher flick with the hope that with a little cosmetic window dressing will help it appeal to an audience in 2017… Live, Die, Repeat. That’s all this film offers with precious few improvements to justify its existence.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The story, such as it is, involves a self obsessed sorority sister named Tree (Jessica Rothe). She acts the way sorority sisters always do in movies like this, meaning she’s a bitch with a capital B, mean to her roommate, sleeps with her married professor, rude to her own father, and seems to live her life aiming for “Mean Girls” type perfection. She begins the day waking up in the dorm room of a college boy (Israel Broussard) she met after a few too many drinks the night before, and ends her...

Arriving in theaters today is Happy Death Day, the latest from filmmaker Christopher Landon that follows a young woman (Jessica Rothe) who must live out her own demise again and again in hopes of unlocking the puzzle to her untimely death. Landon, who has been at the helm of some great genre films like Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, delivers yet another unique cinematic experience with his latest effort.
Daily Dead spoke with Landon at the recent press day for Happy Death Day, where he discussed bringing this project to Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions and collaborating with them on the horror comedy. Landon also chatted about the challenges they faced during production, as well as his thoughts on working closely with Rothe on her unusual character.
Great to speak with you, Chris. Let’s start off by discussing this script and what you saw in it originally.

Blumhouse’s spunky time-loop thriller Happy Death Day plays like a CW-ized Edge Of Tomorrow rehash with the heart of Scream Queens – except, like, totally without self-awareness. Whether Christopher Landon’s vision takes itself too seriously, not serious enough or just plain skimps on horror, Scott Lobdell’s story is basic with a capital “Blah.” That’s not to say fun isn’t had, it’s just all a collegiate Mean Girls schtick that never matches up to university slaughterers like Sorority Row. For a movie about temporal anomalies and never-ending birthday horrors, there’s something unjustly mundane about a glorified slasher drama without the decency to get wild with kills. Not that its PG-13 rating would dare show such bloodshed anyway…

Christopher B. Landon’s “Happy Death Day” doesn’t break out its first “Groundhog Day” joke until well into its third act, but the Jason Blum-produced horror film wears its cinematic pedigree with seeming pride. You can practically hear the pitch that sold the film: it’s the classic Bill Murray comedy, but as a horror film — and centered on a bratty co-ed who gets brutally murdered every night, and is forced to relive the whole thing the next day.
Even the most basic of building blocks are in place, from an initially unlikable protagonist to a generous serving of montages and even an overarching message about the power of being a good person (at one point, a character screams, “love is love!” and it’s both totally endearing and hilariously out of place). But while such a formula has been memorably applied to other genres with strong results — earlier this year,...

Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, Whiplash) produces an “original and inventive rewinding thriller” in Happy Death Day, in which a college student (Jessica Rothe) relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity. Er… original and inventive? Maybe not. Has anyone at Blumhouse seen Blood Punch?
Happy Death Day is directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and written by Scott Lobdell and Landon. The film also stars Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Charles Aitken, and Laura Clifton. If you haven’t seen the trailer and poster yet, you can check them out right here.
