When Playwrights Kill, a new dark comedy by playwright Matthew Lombardo, will skip a planned engagement in Connecticut to “further develop the play this summer in New York City,” producers say.
The comedy, which stars Jeremy Jordan, Harriet Harris and André De Shields, was to have played the Bushnell’s Belding Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut, for a strictly limited run from July 26-August 7. That engagement will be rescheduled for a later date.
“We are so excited to explore the further development of this play” producers said in a statement. “And although sales were strong in Hartford, we decided this shift would benefit all involved, particularly the creative team as they foster their vision in an effort to move this production forward.” As previously announced, When Playwrights Kill is being produced by Nathan Gehan, Jamison Scott, Flody Suarez, Laura Z. Barket, Raymond Esposito, and Jason and Kira Turchin.

While the Drama Desk Awards nominate a slew of off-Broadway fare, the winners invariably come from Broadway. That was once again the case on Sunday when all but one of the 16 champs in the musical races were Broadway productions while it was 8 of 12 on the play side.
This love of all things Broadway even extended to “Hadestown,” which was only in contention for new elements such as cast members after having contended here previously for it Off-Broadway run. It won four awards: Director (Rachel Chavkin), Featured Actor in a Musical (Andre De Shields), Lighting Design, and Sound Design.
One of its main rivals for Best Musical at the Tony Awards is “Tootsie,” which claimed victories for Best Actor (Santino Fontana), Book, Music, and Lyrics. But it was another contender, “The Prom,” that swooped in and claimed Best Musical despite losing all of its other bids.

Daniel Fish’s wildly re-imagined revival of Oklahoma! leads New York’s Drama Desk Awards nominations with 12, including Revival of a Musical. No big surprise there — but the head-scratcher came in the Best Play category: To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the best reviewed productions of the season and a box office smash, was snubbed. See the full list below.
Unlike the Tony Awards, though, the Drama Desk Awards cover both Broadway and Off Broadway, significantly lessening the nominations’ prediction factor. Mockingbird almost certainly will be among the nominees when the Broadway-only Tony roster is announced Tuesday.
Some other notable considerations for the Desk roster is that this season’s Broadway productions of Hadestown, Torch Song and Choir Boy were ineligible from some major overall categories because each had been staged in previous seasons as Off Broadway productions. For the Broadway productions, the Drama Desk nominating committee chose to consider...

As much fun as Act I of "Peter and the Starcatcher" is -- and that cannot be overstated -- the second act contains some of the best scenes on Broadway this season.
Christian Borle ("Smash") is absolutely fabulous as a prissy pirate prone to malapropisms. He seems to be channeling some inner Groucho with the huge mustache -- he is, after all Black Stache -- and does the great bug eyes as well. Borle milks every joke, but never a second too long.
Like everyone in Roger Rees and Alex Timbers' precisely directed play, he never misses a beat or a joke. This cast should be used in drama schools to illustrate the beauty of comic timing.
"Peter and the Starcatcher" is not so easily defined. It's a comedy, clean enough for children. The few mildly suggestive jokes sail over kids' heads but get laughs from the adults. It's a musical,...

When the series finale of ABC's "Ugly Betty" airs April 14, devoted viewers of the dramedy will see Michael Urie as the flamboyant Marc St. James for the last time. Any of those fans who are regular New York theatergoers, however, will still be able to see him as fashion designer Rudi Gernreich at New World Stages in "The Temperamentals." In fact, it's possible some saw Urie as the Viennese gay activist and creator of the monokini even before he was Vanessa Williams' scheming assistant, because he's been doing readings of Jon Marans' play for six years."When Michael did the first reading, he hadn't been on 'Ugly Betty,' " Marans says. "This was just after he'd gotten out of Juilliard [in 2003]. So he was an actor who was looking for a job.""From the first time I read it, six years ago," Urie says, "I was like, 'This play is really good.
